1 Dial-Up Internet FAQ Your FairPoint dial-up service can be used from any computer that has a dialup modem once the dialup connection is configured. Below are the answers to our customer s most common questions such as setting up a dialup connection. SETUP & TROUBLESHOOTING How do I setup a dialup connection on my Windows PC? How do I setup a dialup connection on my Apple? What is the dialup access number for my city? I m receiving an error message when I try to dialup, how can I resolve this? DIAL UP ACCESS NUMBER Below is a list of access numbers based on city and state. Please locate the dialup access number that is nearest to your location. Please note that the responsibility to locate a local access number is the customers and FairPoint Communications is not liable for long distance charges that are accrued. 2 DIALUP TROUBLESHOOTING If you are unable to connect to your dialup connection, here are a few troubleshooting tips that you can attempt: Make sure that you are using the correct dialup access number in your connection. You can verify this by viewing the dialup connection and checking the dialup access number list Are you using the correct username and password? Make sure that you have turned off the CAPS LOCK function and then retype your current main account address and password into the dialup connection. Your username should be the full address, for example username@myfairpoint.net Check the telephone cord that is plugged into the back of your computer and goes to the phone jack. Make sure that this is firmly plugged into each of these devices Remake the dialup connection. You can complete this by following the instructions to setup a dialup connection for Windows or Macintosh Are you still unable to connect? If so, write down the error message that you receive when you attempt to dialup and contact Technical Support at WINDOWS DIALUP SETUP Below are the steps to setup your dialup connection on a Windows PC. Vista 1. Click the START icon in the bottom left hand corner 2. Click CONTROL PANEL in the start menu 3. On the left hand side, click CLASSIC VIEW 4. Find and double click the NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER icon 5. On the left hand side, click SET UP A CONNECTION OR NETWORK 6. In the Choose a connection option window, select SET UP A DIAL-UP CONNECTION 7. Enter the following information : DIAL-UP PHONE NUMBER : Enter the dial-up access number for your city USERNAME : Enter your primary MyFairPoint.net address (Your_Username@MyFairpoint.net) PASSWORD: Enter the password for your main account

3 CONNECTION NAME : Enter the name you wish to identify your dial-up connection such as My FairPoint Connection 8. Check the box labeled ALLOW OTHER PEOPLE TO USE THIS CONNECTION 9. Click CONNECT 10. If you are currently using the phone line that you will be connecting through, you will not be able to connect to the Internet until the phone line is no longer in use. If prompted, select CREATE THIS CONNECTION ANYWAY 11. Go back to the NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER 12. Click MANAGE NETWORK CONNECTIONS from the left menu 13. Find the dial-up connection that you just created. Right click the connection and left click the CREATE SHORTCUT option 14. Select YES in the pop up window stating windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want to place one on the desktop instead? Use your created shortcut on the desktop to connect to your new FairPoint dial-up connection XP: 1. Click the START icon in the bottom left hand corner 2. Click CONTROL PANEL in the start menu 3. On the left hand side, click CLASSIC VIEW

4 4. Find and double click the NETWORK CONNECTIONS icon 5. On the left hand side, click CREATE A NEW CONNECTION 6. The New Connection Wizard will open. Click NEXT 7. Make sure the radio button beside CONNECT TO THE INTERNET is selected and click NEXT

5 8. Select the radio button labeled SETUP MY CONNECTION MANUALLY and click NEXT 9. Select the radio button labeled CONNECT USING A DIAL-UP MODEM and click NEXT 10. In the ISP Name window enter the following information before clicking NEXT: ISP NAME : Enter the name you wish to identify your dial-up connection such as My FairPoint Connection

6 11. In the Phone Number to Dial window, enter the following information before clicking NEXT PHONE NUMBER : Enter the dial-up access number for your city 12. In the Internet Account Information window, enter the following information: USERNAME : Enter your primary MyFairPoint.net address (Your_Username@MyFairpoint.net) PASSWORD: Enter the password for your main account

7 CONFIRM PASSWORD: Enter the password for your main account again 13. Check all three boxes below the Confirm Password text field before clicking NEXT 14. Check the box beside ADD A SHORTCUT TO THIS CONNECTION TO MY DESKTOP. This will make an icon on your desktop for the connection so that you will be able to easily connect to the Internet. 15. Click FINISH 2000: 1. Double click on the MY COMPUTER located on the desktop 2. Open CONTROL PANEL

8 3. Locate and double click the NETWORK AND DIAL-UP CONNECTIONS icon 4. Double click on the MAKE NEW CONNECTION icon

9 5. The Network Connection Wizard will open. Click NEXT 6. Select DIAL-UP TO THE INTERNET and click NEXT

10 7. Select I WANT TO SET UP MY INTERNET CONNECTION MANUALLY and click NEXT 8. Select I CONNECT THROUGH A PHONE LINE AND A MODEM and click NEXT

11 9. In the Step 1 of 3 window, enter the following information before clicking NEXT TELEPHONE NUMBER : Enter the dial-up access number for your city 10. In the Step 2 of 3 window, enter the following information before clicking NEXT USERNAME : Enter your primary MyFairPoint.net address (Your_Username@MyFairpoint.net) PASSWORD: Enter the password for your main account

12 11. In the Step 3 of 3 window, enter the following information before clicking NEXT: CONNECTION NAME : Enter the name you wish to identify your dial-up connection such as My FairPoint Connection 12. In the Set Up Your Internet Mail Account window, select NO and then click NEXT 13. Click FINISH 14. The Dial-up Connection box will appear. Press CONNECT to being using your dial-up connection. The password shown will always appear to be 16 characters long. This is a Windows security feature that should be disregarded when troubleshooting.

13 15. You should now be able to connect to the Internet. Remember, f you are currently using the phone line that you will be connecting through, you will not be able to connect to the Internet until you are off the phone 16. To create a shortcut for your desktop, navigate back to the NETWORK AND DIAL-UP CONNECTIONS screen. 17. Right click your dial-up connection that was just created 18. Left click on CREATE SHORTCUT 19. Select YES in the pop up window stating Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want to place one on the desktop instead? Use your created shortcut on the desktop to connect to your new FairPoint dial-up connection Millennium / 98: 1. Open MY COMPUTER 2. Double click to open the CONTROL PANEL 3. Double click to open the DIAL-UP NETWORKING folder 4. Select MAKE NEW CONNECTION 5. In the Make New Connection Window, enter My FairPoint Connection in the text field 6. Verify that the SELECT A DEVICE drop down lists a currently installed modem and click NEXT. 7. In the Make new Connection Window, enter the following information before clicking NEXT AREA CODE : Enter area code for your city TELEPHONE NUMBER : Enter the dial-up access number for your city 8. Click FINISH 9. Right click the DIAL-UP CONNECTION that was just created and then left click on CREATE SHORTCUT 10. Select YES in the pop up window stating Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want to place one on the desktop instead? Use your created shortcut on the desktop to connect to your new FairPoint dial-up connection

14 MACINTOSH DIALUP SETUP Below are the steps to setup your dialup connection on a Macintosh computer Mac OS X through 10.5 Note: Connections can also be created by using the Network Setup Assistant 1. Open SYSTEM PREFERENCES from your dock bar 2. Find and click NETWORK 3. Click on the INTERNAL MODEM link so it is selected. 4. Select CONFIGURE at the bottom of the Network window 5. Enter the required information as listed below: CONNECTION NAME : Enter the name you wish to identify your dial-up connection such as My FairPoint Connection

15 ACCOUNT NAME : Enter your primary MyFairPoint.net address (Your_Username@MyFairpoint.net) PASSWORD: Enter the password for your main account TELEPHONE NUMBER : Enter the dial-up access number for your city 6. Check the box labeled SAVE PASSWORD and then click APPLY NOW 7. You will now be able to open your internet browser, dialup to your FairPoint connection and begin surfing the internet Mac OS 8 & 9 1. From the APPLE MENU, select CONTROL PANEL 2. Open the REMOTE ACCESS window 3. Enter the required information: NAME : Enter your primary MyFairPoint.net address (Your_Username@MyFairpoint.net) PASSWORD: Enter the password for your main account TELEPHONE NUMBER : Enter the dial-up access number for your city 4. Select the OPTIONS button

16 5. Select the PPP tab and verify that the box next to CONNECT AUTOMATICALLY WHEN STARTING TCP/IP APPLICATIONS is checked 6. Click OK and you will be brought back to the PPP window 7. Click CONNECT if you are ready to connect to the Internet. Remember, if you are currently using the phone line that you will be connecting through, you will not be able to connect to the Internet until you are off the phone
