2 Configuring your Spec Ed laptop for Dialup, DSL/Cable Modem and Wireless Access to the Internet You have been provided a laptop computer for the purpose of accessing the IEP Online software from both the school and home. The computer has been configured to access this software from your school network and changes should not be made to any computer settings except as explained below. IEP Online is an Internet based application and the laptop must be connected to the Internet before you can use the software. There are three ways you can connect to the internet with your laptop. These are dialup, direct connect to a Local Area Network (LAN)/DSL/Cable modem and wireless. This document will explain how to configure each of these types of connection. Dialup 1. You must first connect the laptop to a live analog telephone wall jack. Do not attempt to connect the computer to school phones as our phone system is digital and you can damage school phone equipment. Plug the phone cable into the telephone jack in the wall and the telephone jack on your computer. The phone jack is located on the right side of your computer. Your computer has two jacks that look very much alike. The smaller one is the telephone jack and the larger is the network. Make sure the telephone cord is plugged into the telephone jack. It will fit in the computer jack.

3 2. Highlight the Dialup network icon on your desktop and double click it with the left mouse button. 3. The Dialup connection dialog box will then be displayed 4. Enter your Internet Service Provider (ISP) User Name and Password in the appropriate boxes. Remember Passwords are case sensitive. My ISP User Name is and my ISP Password is. (Write your ISP User name and Password here for future reference.) 5. Enter your ISP telephone access number in the dial box and click the dial button. My Internet telephone access number is. (Write your ISP telephone number here for future reference.) 6. The connection process will start. Several dialog boxes will then be displayed on your screen showing the connection process status. Once you receive a message indicating you are connected. You can open the Web browser and surf away. 7. When you have finished with your Internet activities close your browser, highlight the Dialup Network icon on your desktop the left mouse button. and double click it with

4 8. The following dialog box will then be displayed. 9. Move your mouse onto the Disconnect button and double click the left mouse button. That will disconnect you from the phone line and close our Internet session Direct Connect 1. You must first connect the laptop to a network wall jack. Plug the network cable into the network jack in the wall and network jack on your computer. The network jack is located on the right side of your computer.

5 Your computer has two jacks that look very much alike. The larger one is the network and the smaller is the telephone. Make sure the network cord is plugged into the network jack. The network cable will not plug into the phone jack. 2. You will now need to configure your laptop network card to talk to your ISP. From your desktop highlight the My Computer icon and click the left mouse button.. 3. The My Computer window will open. Use your mouse and highlight My Network Places on the left side of the screen and press the RIGHT mouse button. 4. Next select properties from the pop-up menu that is displayed.

6 5. The network connections window will now be displayed. You will see several connections on this screen. The Local Area Connection is the one that is used on the school network as well as DSL/Cable Modem. 6. Use the mouse to highlight the Local Area Connection icon and press the Right mouse button. Click the Properties option on the pop-up menu that is displayed. 7. The Connection properties screen will now be displayed.

7 8. Use the mouse to high Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Next move the mouse onto the Properties button and press the left mouse button. The Internet Properties screen will be displayed. 9. The radio button Use the following IP address is checked as well as the radio button Use the following DNS server addresses. The screen also contains the IP address, Subnet mask, Default gateway, and Preferred DNS server information. This information displayed is required when your laptop is connected to the Lee County Schools Network from your school. Record the current settings on the following diagram before you make any changes as you will need to use these settings when the laptop is brought back to school:

Both DSL and Cable Internet service providers generally provide the IP and DNS info to your PC automatically when the connection is established You will need to click the radio button box Obtain an IP address automatically and the radio button Obtain DNS server address automatically. Once this is done the screen should look like the following diagram: 11. After you have made the necessary changes and your screen looks like the above diagram, move the mouse onto the OK button and click the left mouse button. The Local Area Connection Properties screen will reappear.

9 12. Move the mouse onto the OK button and click the left mouse button. You will be returned to the network connections window. You can now close out all remaining open windows and return to your desktop. You will now be able to access IEP Online. <<<<This is very Important >>>> 13. When you return the laptop to school repeat the above steps using the settings written down in step 9 to reconfigure the laptop for school use. Please reset the laptop to its original configuration before you pass the laptop to anyone else. Each laptop has a unique address and the laptop will not work on the school system network without the address assigned to it. Wireless 1. Your laptop contains a wireless network card. This card is currently disabled. You can use the wireless connection at home or in public places providing wireless service but there is no guarantee that IEP Online will always work properly. If you desire to enable the wireless connection, from your Windows desktop highlight the My Computer icon and click the left mouse button.. 2. The My Computer window will open. Use your mouse to highlight My Network Places on the left side of the screen and press the RIGHT mouse button. 3. Next select properties from the pop-up menu that is displayed.

10 4. The network connections window will now be displayed. You will see several connections on this screen. 5. Use the mouse to highlight the Wireless Network Connection icon and press the Right mouse button. Click the Enable option on the pop-up menu that is displayed. 6. The Icon dialog will change from Disabled to Not Connected or Connected. From to or

11 7. The Wireless network connection is set to obtain and IP address and DNS information automatically and should not need to be changed. Should you have to assign a static address follow steps 5 through 9 in the direct connect section of this document. Just select the wireless network connection in step 5.
