"My ultimate goal is to put a band together and conquer the world," Venerosa said matter-of-factly during a visit this week to his hometown. It's a goal that the 2005 Amsterdam High School graduate says he can't remember not having. He started playing the guitar at age 12, cutting his teeth as a student at St. Mary's Institute, where he was taught by music teacher Rachelle Cotugno and had his first public performances in St. Mary's Church. "It's the only thing that I want to do, that I can do," said Venerosa. As a teenager, Venerosa played guitar in the local band Dysfunction, a name he says is proof that they were 15 years old when it was formed. The band was put together by Albany-area manager Mike Cleary, who conducted a regional talent search for prodigy level musicians between 15 and 17 years old. "Tim auditioned and literally just blew my socks off," said Cleary. "He didn't know how to read music, but he could just play." Dysfunction auditioned for a record label in Nashville when Venerosa was 17, but nothing came of the audition and within a couple of years the band unraveled. "The youth of the band kind of imploded -- girls, other interests -- but Tim always stayed on course in playing the guitar, so I continued to work with him," said Cleary. "If you just watch him play, he's just phenomenal; he will definitely be in the music business." The band's dead-end was a first taste of disappointment for Venerosa, followed up last February when he was flown to California to audition for the scholarship to the acclaimed Musicians Institute and came in fourth place. "After that I was basically determined to win the next one," Venerosa said of the quarterly scholarship. In late August 2010, he made a second trip to California, after Cleary encouraged him to play "the hardest, most difficult solos you can think of." The rock music enthusiast dipped into his blues roots and selected Stevie Ray Vaughan selections that the backing band provided by the Musicians Institute could not keep up with. He took first place, awarded a full scholarship the covers tuition as well as $10,000 in living expenses. Venerosa describes the Musicians Institute as "a lot of work, a lot of playing" and exposure to some of the best musicians in the world as teachers. His classes focus on chart reading, music theory, song writing and more. It's the kind of discipline and skills that Cleary has encouraged him to go after. "The artist thing -- even with my help, even with money and even with luck -- you're still talking 1 percent or 2 percent to be that rock star," said Cleary. "You don't ever quit that dream, but simultaneously he's doing the right things to be in the music business for the rest of his life." Venerosa will graduate in April 2012 and before obtaining his Associate's Degree in guitar performance, he'll be auditioning musicians for a band he hopes will have a 1970s rock feel. "I've learned a lot about becoming a professional musician, not a rock star," he said. But make no mistake: "I still want to be a rock star, though." 6 Sep 07, 2010 On Friday, August 31, the ten finalists in the Fall 2010 Full Ride Scholarship Competition arrived from across the country to perform in the final competition round on MI s main concert stage. After all performances and judging were complete, the three winners were: st 1 Place (Full Ride Scholarship + $10,000 Living Expenses): Tim Venerosa from Hagman, N.Y. nd 2 Place (Full Ride Scholarship): Jaime Inda from Yuma, AZ rd 3 Place (50 % Tuition Scholarship): Steve Prunty from Kalispell, MT The first round of competition began on line as contestants submitted videos and mp3 s displaying their talents. After MI staff evaluated the hundreds of entries, ten finalists were chosen and flown to LA to spend two days rehearsing for the performance that would determine the winners. For the final round, each contestant performed two cover songs of their choice accompanied by a pro band before a panel of MI instructors, who judged performances on factors including musicality, stage presence and the degree of difficulty of the chosen pieces. This event was a perfect microcosm of the MI experience, observed Jude Gold, Director of MI s Guitar Program. Immensely talented performers from different musical, geographical, and cultural backgrounds were bonding, making friends, gaining professional experience, and forging alliances that could last a lifetime. Only three of them walked off with scholarships, but all ten gained immensely. (check out all of the finalists at fullride.mi.edu). The next Full Ride Scholarship competition will be held during winter 2011 for applicants prepared to enroll in the spring 2011 class.
