1 Admission Information Your journey to a career in music begins at Indiana State University, where you ll find opportunities to pursue the road that interests you whether it s teaching, performing, working in the music industry, or continued study toward an advanced degree. While pursuing your degree and your passion for music, you will thrive in small classes while receiving personal attention from dedicated faculty who are extraordinary musicians in their own right. No matter what path you chose, you will leave with a solid foundation in music a result of performing in ensembles, private lessons, participating in a steady stream of community activities and classroom instruction. Admission to the University Apply for admission (prior to audition) and be accepted unconditionally. In addition, all prospective students should visit to see a listing of academic awards available. For priority consideration for all merit (academic) scholarships, students must be admitted by December 1, Acceptance to the Submit the Online Application or the hard copy Application Form for Undergraduate Majors and Minors Schedule an on-campus audition. On-campus auditions are preferable for scholarship consideration. Should circumstances prevent a live audition, students may be granted conditional acceptance based on a recorded performance (CD, mp3, or video). Request at least one Letter of Recommendation from a teacher or other professional familiar with your musical ability. All music scholarships are performance-based. If you are interested in being considered for a music performance scholarship, you must apply to ISU by February 1, 2016 and audition by March 1, 2016.

3 Audition Information Auditions for music major and minor admissions, transfer student admissions, and scholarships for Fall 2016 will officially take place on the following dates: Monday, November 2, 2015 (Music Career Day) Monday, January 25, 2016 Friday, February 5, 2016 (Music Career Day) Monday, February 15, 2016 (President s Day) Monday, February 29, 2016 Please phone the at to set up your audition day and time. Music Scholarships Each year the awards over $100,000 in scholarships to deserving students who have been accepted for admission to Indiana State University. All music scholarships are performance-based. If you are interested in being considered for a music performance scholarship, you must apply to ISU by February 1, 2016 and audition by March 1, Audition Process An entering music major is expected to have developed music reading skills and to have achieved considerable performing skills on an instrument or in voice. These skills are demonstrated to the music faculty through an audition. Those students who wish to pursue a degree in music performance are expected to display greater proficiency and aptitude than those who are entering other degree programs. The audition also includes a short assessment of theory and piano skills. Please visit the Music Theory Assessment page for further information. The audition determines: Admission to a music curriculum Proficiency for specific areas of study (music education, music business, performance and liberal studies) Eligibility for a music scholarship Audition Requirements by Instrument/Voice Woodwind and Brass instruments A solo Scales the student will demonstrate range and styles of articulation through the performance of major scales Sight-reading Piano Outlined on next page Strings Two solos of contrasting styles Major scales in three octaves Sight-reading Percussion 1. Snare Drum A solo Rudiments (1-13) 2. Mallets (Marimba, Xylophone, Vibraphone) A solo Major scales 3. Demonstrate proficiency in one of the following: Timpani Multiple Percussion Drum Set 4. Sight-reading Snare drum Mallets Voice A classical solo performed from memory on the level of Group 1 (Indiana State Solo Contest List) A brief examination in rhythmic and melodic sight-reading as well as music theory (major and minor key signatures)

4 Audition Requirements for Undergraduate Music Majors and Minors declaring Piano as their Principal Instrument Every music major or minor desiring to declare piano as a principal instrument must audition for the piano faculty before enrolling for the first semester of study. I. Audition requirements for the degree Bachelor of Music in Performance with piano as a principal instrument: A. Repertoire: perform from memory a minimum of four pieces, contrasting in style and at least equal in difficulty to: Baroque: Bach Preludes & Fugues, or movements from suites or partitas Classical: movements from sonatas of Mozart, Haydn, or Beethoven Romantic: Nocturnes or Waltzes of Chopin or any of the Intermezzi, etc. of Brahms 20th Century: Debussy Preludes, Copland The Cat & The Mouse, or Bartók Rumanian Folk Dances If an audition meets the general standards stated above, the student will be admitted unconditionally with piano as his/her principal instrument and will enroll in the normal sequence of piano courses (private instruction). Any minor deficiencies noted at the audition must be removed as recommended by the piano faculty by reexamination at the end of the first semester of study. In the case of major deficiencies, the student will enroll in music 100, piano, and re-audition at the end of that semester of study. B. Basic technique: perform major scales and arpeggios, hands together, four octaves. Knowledge of minor scales and arpeggios is desired, but not mandatory. C. Sight-reading: play four-part textures and upper intermediate level repertoire at sight. D. Exhibit evidence of technical proficiency and musical aptitude exceeding that required of freshman students entering on other music curricula; demonstrate potential to complete a four year course of study in which major emphasis will be placed on performance. II. Audition requirements for piano as a principal instrument on any music curriculum other than performance: A. Repertoire: perform two pieces, contrasting in style and at least equal in difficulty to: Baroque: Bach Two-Part Inventions Classical: movements from the easier sonatas of Mozart, Haydn, or Beethoven Romantic: easier Waltzes or Nocturnes of Chopin 20th Century: Debussy Arabesques or Bartók Mikrokosmos, book 4. Memorization is desired, but not mandatory. B. Basic technique: perform major scales, hands together, two or more octaves. C. Sight-reading: play easy four-part textures (hymns, folk songs) at sight.

5 Music Theory Assessment When you arrive on campus for your audition, you will also be expected to take a short assessment in music theory. This assessment will determine whether you will start in Music Theory I/Skills I (MUS 111/113) or Music Fundamentals (MUS 101). The assessment will take approximately minutes. To do well on the placement assessment, you should be familiar with the following items: Pitches Name and notate pitches in both treble and bass clefs. Notes and rests Name notes and rests (quarter note, half rest, etc.) You also need to know how many counts these notes and rests receive. Rhythm and meter Assign an appropriate time signature to a series of notes and rests (containing bar lines). Place bar lines in appropriate places, when given a time signature and a series of notes and rests. Key signatures Identify and write all major and minor key signatures, in both treble and bass clefs. Scales Write all major and three types of minor scales in both treble and bass clefs, using accidentals, not key signatures. Triads Correctly identify both the root and quality of major and minor triads in root position and first inversion, in both treble and bass clefs. Preparing for the assessment The first step toward preparing for this assessment is to ask your private teacher or ensemble director for help. Two recommendations are preferred, with the second being from a second music teacher or from anyone familiar with your music background.
