5 What is a Mass Flow Meter? Other names: Coriolis flow meter / Inertial flow meter Measures mass directly, no conversions Able to detected entrained air in the flow Able to measure fuel quantity in a two phased flow (e.g. Air & Fuel) No moving parts

7 Global Developments in Mass Flow Meter First practical Coriolis flow meter was introduced over 30 years ago by Micro Motion Today, over 600,000 Coriolis meters are employed across a variety of industries BP Marine Fuels started trials more than 2 years ago Bunker barge, M/V PRIDE, used for trials of mass flow meter Maersk installing flow meters on its fleet of vessels Trial on Dirch Maersk, target to have 50 vessels fitted by end Eventual fitting on all of Maersk s vessel More shipping companies adopting such systems

9 The Need for Standard for Mass Flow Meter Desirable characteristics of products Quality, environmental friendliness, safety, reliability, efficiency and interchangeability At an economical cost. Standardization to reduce confusion Ensures everyone works on a common platform Facilitates policing by establishing: SOPs for use of mass flow meters (e.g. Placement of flow meter on bunker tanker s deck, frequency of calibration, ideal flow rate, procedures during tank stripping) Channels for disputes when it arises Facilitates education and training Stimulates industry take-up When standards are absent, we soon notice. - International Organization of Standards And many more...
