2 Hi-Pres MGO Cooling system Hi-Pres MGO Cooling System The Novenco Hi-Pres MGO cooling system is developed to cool low sulphur fuel to raise the viscosity to a level required by pumps and engines. Novenco offers: High quality equipment Quick delivery of Cooling system Retrofit in harbour and during voyage To lower the general pollution, EU, California and IMO (MARPOL) have made new rules for own and also for foreign flagged vessels as listed below. Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships: EU Directive 2005/33/EC California Air Resources Board (CARB) IMO MARPOL Annex VI 2008 The headlines taken from the new rules will require all ships to meet the following limits for sulphur level in the marine fuel oil. From 1 January 2010, all ships at berth in EU for more than 2 hours and not using shore power must use a fuel with less than 0.1% sulphur when at berth. After 30 June 2009, all ships within a 24-mile distance off the coast of California must use a fuel with less than 0.5% sulphur for DMB/C and less than 1.5% sulphur for DMA/X for engines, generators and boilers. From 1 January 2012, this limit is lowered to 0.1%. From 1 July 2010, all ships in Sulphur Emission Controlled Areas (complete North Sea, Baltic and the English Channel) must use a fuel with less than 1.0% sulphur for engines, generators and boilers. From 1 January 2015, the limit is lowered to 0.1%. 2

3 Engine and Boiler Manufacturer Requirements In order to ensure satisfactory hydrodynamic oil film between fuel pump plunger and barrel hereby avoiding fuel pump break-down, engine designers recommend to keep a fuel oil viscosity of min. 2 cst measured at the fuel pump inlet. This limit provides the required safety margin against fuel pump break-down. At start and stop of engines/generators with older fuel pumps, the viscosity is recommended to be over 3.0 cst because the fuel will by-pass the plunger. As the fuel temperature increases during operation, it is impossible to maintain a low temperature at the fuel pump inlets. A temperature of C at the fuel pump inlets can be expected corresponding to a viscosity far below the limits. The consequence will be fuel pump break-down. TECHNICAL DATA The below figures are taken from ISO 8217:2005 Petroleum products - Fuels (class F) - Specifications of marine fuels. The DMA viscosity for normal fuel is listed between cst at 40 C and a sulphur level at 1.5%. Even though the limit for DMB/C fuel is lower, it is always so high that it does not cause any problems for the fuel pumps. The DMA is the only fuel where a maximum of 0.1% sulphur level can be obtained. It is possible to find DMB/C fuel with a maximum sulphur level of 0.5%. The DMA fuel with maximum 0.1% sulphur level is averagely 3 cst at 40 C. However, the fuel is sometimes down to 2 cst., and in some parts of the world even 1.5 cst is found. The DMB/C fuel with a maximum sulphur level of 0.5% is very difficult to find in America and Asia. 3

All DMA fuels need cooling to prevent break-down of the boiler fuel pumps. The DMA fuel needs cooling from 5 cst at 40 C and lower in order for the engines/generators to start and stop. If DMB/C is not available in California, DMA fuel is the only alternative. In 2015, sailing in the SECA waters will require cooling. 4

5 MGO Cooling System WHAT IS AN MGO COOLING SYSTEM? The only way to ensure a minimum viscosity of 2 cst at the fuel pumps with DMA fuel at a viscosity of 3 cst at 40 C is to install a cooler in the system. The below drawing shows how it can be done in principal. Layout drawing The ship s fuel system consists of the normal heavy fuel oil tank and an MGO fuel oil tank for operation in restricted areas. The system can be equipped with a fuel switch which automatically switches from HFO to MGO. The MGO cooling can be installed just before the engine as in the above drawing or other places in the system. The advantage of installing the cooler just before the engine/generator is that it becomes possible to optimize the viscosity regulation at the engine/generator inlet. There are 3 different ways of obtaining the cooling media: 1. If the vessel has a sea water cooling system, a titanium sea water / fresh water exchanger can be installed. The fresh water then cools the fuel with a fresh water/ fuel heat exchanger (a direct sea water / fuel heat exchanger is not recommendable/allowed due to possible leak of fuel to sea water). This cooling system can only cool the fuel to 40 C and is almost the same price as option If the vessel has a fresh water cooling system, a sea water / fresh water exchanger can be installed. It can only cool the fuel to 40 C. 3. A chilled water unit can be installed together with a chilled water / fuel heat exchanger. This system can cool the fuel below 0 C if necessary. 5

6 Hi-Pres MGO Cooling System HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THIS For a limited cost, a chilled water system and associated control system will put you on the safe side. Sailing in EU To do nothing is not an option. The DMA fuel will often be below 3 cst at 40 C which causes fuel pump breakdown. If there is a sea water cooling system on the vessel, the most sensible solution is a chilled water solution. Sailing in California: If there is no available DMB/C, a cooling system must be installed. The conclusions are as Sailing in EU. After 30 June 2009, the solution is a chilled water solution because the engines need to be started and stopped. If there is a fresh water cooling system, it is possible with just a fresh water heat exchanger. However, as the fuel requirements get tougher in the future, it can be expensive as the chilled water unit might be necessary anyway. When the boiler is running on MGO, a new fuel pump or a chilled water unit are the only options. Sailing in SECA: From 1 January 2015, the only solution is a chilled water solution because the engines need to be started and stopped. Chilled Water System Novenco has developed a chilled water unit with oil cooler for the purpose of controlling the viscosity with very precise temperature control as it is a strong requirement from the engine/generator manufacturer. The cooling system consists of a chiller, control system, chilled water pump, expansion tank and Oil Cooler. It can be used for both new building and retrofits.
