Mahoney (Co-chairs), Huseyin Leblebici, and Rebecca L. Sandefur School of Business Administration, University of Miami, Miami, FL B.B.A., Department of Management, May 2006 GPA: 3.9/4.0 Major: Business Management & Organization Minors: Biology, Chemistry Honors: Cum Laude, Departmental Honors GMAT: 750/800 (99%) Scholarships: Bowman Foster Ashe, University of Miami Alumni Association, Florida Academic Scholars, Tylenol, Association of Indians in America, Police Athletic League RESEARCH My research examines firms human capital strategies: why do firms pursue them, how do firms generate a competitive advantage from their human capital strategies, and under what conditions are human capital strategies more or less effective? My dissertation investigates the two main ways firms augment their human capital: building and acquiring. I seek to advance this important, but understudied area of research in the strategic human capital literature by explaining how and when, as well as with what performance effects, firms engage in each of these human capital strategies. The first essay from my dissertation examines how firms increase their economic returns from the strategies of building and acquiring human capital. The next essay focuses on the drivers of human capital building and acquiring; specifically, under what conditions do firms choose one human capital augmentation strategy over the other. The third essay explores the impact of the business cycle on these two human capital augmentation strategies. In my empirical work, I use a longitudinal dataset constructed by combining several secondary data sources on the largest U.S. law firms over the last two decades. In the near future, I will continue my work in this research stream and leverage the dataset to pursue a program of deeper inquiry into human capital strategies. 1
2 Research Articles Chauradia, A.J. How Do Firms Augment their Talent? A Comparative Performance Assessment of Building and Acquiring of Human Capital. Job market paper. This essay identifies four problems quality uncertainty, firm-specific human capital, team complementarities, and employee motivation that firms may need to address in order to increase their economic returns through building and acquiring human capital. These problems manifest in different ways depending on firms augmentation (building or acquiring) strategies, and thus firms need to address them in different ways. A comparative longitudinal analysis of 145 law firms indicates that reputation, prior experience with building, and the promotion chances of employees are key moderators of firms building strategy in generating superior firm performance, and the hiring of external leaders, prior experience with acquiring, and the promotion chances are key moderators of firms acquiring strategy in generating superior firm performance. Chauradia, A.J. (2011). Nation-States and the Multinational Corporation: A Political Economy of Foreign Direct Investment by Nathan Jensen. Enterprise and Society, 12(2): This is a review of Jensen s book on the influence of government policies and political institutions on multinational corporation investments, in particular, how and why countries entice foreign investors. Chauradia, A.J. & Somaya, D. The Use of Count Data Models in Management Research. To be submitted to Strategic Management Journal (Target date: January 2014). We conduct a meta-analysis of 374 articles employing count data models from in eight leading management journals, highlighting the specification and distributional issues that have lead to erroneous conclusions and then presenting ways to appropriately model and interpret count phenomena in future research. Chauradia, A.J. & Somaya, D. Is Pro Bono Also Pro Lucrum? Firm-Level Pro Bono Participation, Human Capital Advantages, and Profitability in Law Firms. To be submitted to Strategic Management Journal (Target date: March 2014). In this firm-level study on the phenomena of pro bono programs, we find that sustained commitment to pro bono positively impacts employee satisfaction, leads to superior firm performance, and positively moderates human capital leveraging and inexperienced human capital on firm performance ((through meaningful work and skill enhancement). Qian, L., Milewicz, C., Echambadi, R., Ganesh, J., & Chauradia, A.J. Customer Service Investments and Stock Performance. To be submitted to Management Science. Using quarterly data on eleven airlines from 1997 to 2006, we empirically test two implicit theoretical assumptions in the resource-based view resource accumulation and supply-demand interdependency that is necessary to gain a competitive advantage. 2
