SOCIETAL AND POLICY IMPACTS The paper Accounting for Lease Renewal Options: The Informational Effects of Unit of Account Choices published in The Accounting Review has a direct impact on ongoing deliberations of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) on how leased assets are presented in financial statements. This paper identifies a potential problem with the disclosure standard proposed by the FASB and also proposes an alternative presentation that mitigates the identified problem. The paper Who Believes the Hype? An Experimental Examination of How Language Affects Investor Judgments published in the Journal of Accounting Research addresses concerns expressed by financial regulators that the use of vivid language (particularly in media) may exacerbate bubbles in bull markets and accelerate panics in bear markets. Our experimental evidence suggests that this concern may not be warranted. The working paper titled Conflict of Interests, Transparency, and Accountability: A Laboratory Study shows some unintended consequences of transparency and accountability, both of which are proposed by regulators as potential remedies for conflicts of interest. We show that, under certain conditions, increased transparency and accountability exacerbate conflicts instead of mitigating them. The working paper titled Do Investors Evaluate Guidance Quality Conditional on Earnings Quality? provides preliminary evidence that investors may fixate on managers forecast quality and, in doing so, ignore the more serious issue of the underlying earnings quality.
