2 Grand Knight Message (continued) money to Birth Choice or a similar established pro-life organization. We have already donated $1000 to Birth Choice. If we finally select Birth Choice for the Toby money, the total donation to Birth Choice this year would be $2000. This action requires a notice in our Newsletter and a vote of the Council after 30 days. Annual dues are due now. Please send your checks to our Financial Secretary Don Davis. Thank you. Also, don t forget to purchase your Mardi Gras tickets on sale after all the Masses. Brother Knights, the Mardi Gras is our biggest fundraiser, and accounted for 2/3 of our charitable money donated this past year. Many of those who attended last year said they really enjoyed the food, music, dancing and partying. Many of your brother Knights are putting in long hours to make this event our best ever!! Please come. We have our third new fundraiser ready to launch right after Lent a one day bus trip to Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula. Save the date: April 10, Stay tuned. Don t forget to recycle your beverage containers on Mardi Gras day, Saturday February 2 from 8 to 10 am in the Church parking lot. 6 Brother Knights, Donate a Car! As you know many organizations raise money in the name of charities through vehicle donations and it is a guessing game to know how much money really goes to charity. A couple years ago some Knights in Dana Point started a vehicle donation program to be administrated by Knights and all the funds after expenses would be sent back to the councils who donated the vehicles. All the legalities and obstacles have now been overcome and our Council 9195 has joined the program. It is called Ave Maria Catholic Vehicle Donations and the administrating Dana Point Knights have now returned tens of thousands of dollars to councils in California who have participated. Their focus is to market the program through the Knights and other Catholic entities. It is as easy as a phone call to donate an unwanted car. The donating person receives a tax benefit from Ave Maria (501-C-3) for the sale amount of the vehicle and the local council gets the majority of the money. Two of our Brothers Knights have already donated unwanted vehicles to kick off the program for our San Antonio Council. We received over $ about 2 weeks after the vehicles were auctioned. Not a lot of money yet, but if all our Brothers could find just one car in their neighborhood or at work or from family and multiply that single sale by 200 (our current membership) then we could potentially receive $70,000. 9 Brother Knights, Sunshine Report Pope s Prayer Intention Please keep the following Knights and their families in your thoughts and prayers, you might call and wish them the best in their recovery or maybe send a card. Remember, some of these situations just tear at your heart and theirs. Also, if anyone can help in the pickup of Brother Knights to take them for medical treatment, take them to church, or bring them to our council meetings, please or call me. I thank all of you for the prayers you offered for the three knights who passed away last month, Gabe Armijo, Bob O Hare, and Bernie Karcher. I ve enclosed an appreciation card from Bernie Karcher s family for our condolences. Brother Bob Florentino s grand daughter, Jackie, has a spot on her lungs and needs all of our prayers. Brother Ron Spignolio recently had a knee replacement. He said, I just got back from rehab and I am doing great thanks to all the prayers. The Pope s general intention is: Migrant Families: That migrant families, especially the mothers, may be supported and accompanied in their difficulties.. Brother Memo Garcia asks that we keep his mother-in-law, Mary McCormick, in our prayers. He said, Grandma" had a successful full hip replacement shortly after Thanksgiving. Her recovery is going well and she is up and about. She still needs a "walker" full time. She will be 85 next month and is going strong. Thanx for the prayers and keep them coming. Brother David Rathswohl s wife, Jeanne, needs our prayers for a speedy recovery from shoulder surgery. Peace: That the peoples at war and in conflict may lead the way in building a peaceful future. Brother Gary Murray who was hospitalized following a stroke is now home. This is a report on his condition from his wife, Linda. She said, As much as I appreciate your arranging transportation for Gary, all therapy is on hold until oncologist would approve/disapprove of continued pt/to since the recent bone scan showed that some prostate cancer has moved into the bones. :( Matt is here during the day now. We surely appreciate continued prayers. Brother Alex Sledge has been ill for over 10 months and has numerous medical problems. Pray for his recent recovery from a 9

10 hospital procedure. Sunshine Report (cont) This young man needs a lot of prayers. He recently started dialysis for loss of kidney function and then had a heart attack. Brother Bob DePaola asks for prayers for his grandson. He said, His grandson is currently at the hospital undergoing additional test. He is having dye put into his blood to look at a fistula he has. Fistula is a growth which is an abnormal connection between an organ and his intestine. It is due to the numerous surgeries he has had and may have to be surgically removed (another surgery). Brother Tony DePaola reported on the health of his family, Bernetta and Doug. He says, Thanks for all for your prayers, Bernetta and Doug are still undergoing treatment and living a happy life day to day. Brother Jim Dawson continues on dialysis three days a week and recently his back has been bothering him due to the accident that cracked his hip. He is able to attend meetings and other Knight s functions. Brother Jack Abajian says, Thank you Brothers for the Prayers. My Fiancée Toni is coming along, as well as my mother and sister. Brother Steve Zegler says, I am adjusting to my "New Normal". After two surgeries, chemo, and maximum radiation, I will never be robust. There are more good days than bad so I call that progress. Thanks and Vivat Jesus! Brother Neil Jouvenant is recovering from a very serious hip replacement surgery involving his spine and leg. His back and hips are affected. He has difficulty getting around, but is in good spirits and thanks the Knights for the prayers. He hopes to be coming to a meeting soon. Frank Collard says, My sister Darby is back in chemo treatments as the cancer has spread. The hope is to slow the cancer and give her longer to live. If the quality of life drops off do to the chemo then she will stop the chemo. Our prayers are needed. Amen. Brother Gonzalo Gonzalez says, My sister in law is still in great need of our prayers. She is doing better, currently in the hospital and the doctors said the tumors shrank significantly so they were able to remove the colostomy bag. My family and I thank everyone for your prayers they are working. Get well cards and flowers have been sent to the recently ill Knights. God Bless All Brother Bert Sunshine Chairman 10

21 Dear Brothers, Ceremonial Calendar December Birthdays Included in this newsletter are all the degrees coming in the next month or two. Please look them over and let me know if there are any you want to attend. Some of you can do all your degrees in the next two months. Father Kass is easiest and the 3rd degree is the best. If you can not make any 1st or 2nd degree at Father Kass let me know and I'll RSVP some where else. Also 3rd degree must be RSVP in advance and pay the fee for this degree. Remember this comes with a meal all family members are welcome to the dinner but you need to pay for them in advanced. All money is non-refundable.
