A friend gave me this prayer and I wish to share it with you. This is the beginning of a new day. God has given me this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good, but what I do today is important, because I am exchanging a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place something that I have traded for it. I want it to be gain, and not loss; good and not evil; success, and not failure; in order that I shall not regret the price that I have paid for it. A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAPTER PRESIDENT My Brother Knights, As we enter September, one quarter of the new fraternal year is almost over. What has your Council accomplished so far toward meeting its goals for the year? The 2014 Columbus Day Dinner will be held on Sunday October 12, 2014 at the Pittsburgh Marriott North. Social is at 5:00 P.M. with Dinner at 6:00 P.M. Reservation forms and advertising forms are available on the Chapter Website. Even if your council cannot attend, at least donate toward an ad. By the time you read this, the deadline for reservations for the Bishop's Project Kick Off Dinner may have passed. The winning council was Immaculate Conception Council #7549 of Clarion. Next year s tournament will be hosted by St. John the Baptist Council #8891 (New Freedom, PA) at the Hickory Heights Golf Course in Spring Grove, PA. Iraq Fund the Knights of C o l u m b u s announced that it is establishing a fund to assist those particularly Christians as well as other religious minorities facing a horrific and violent persecution and possible extinction in Iraq and the surrounding regions. The Knights has pledged an initial $500,000 and will match an additional $500,000 in donations from the public. <continued from page 1> There is still time to register for the Men s Day of Reflection on Saturday September 13, 2014, sponsored by the Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy. Registration forms are on the Chapter website. Registration deadline is September 7. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday September 2, 2014 at Holy Ghost Council #10812 Duquesne University at 7:30 P.M. As usual Fr. McCool has arranged for parking for the meeting. Please read the directions for the meeting for information on parking. We are still looking for councils to host the chapter meetings. If your council is interested please contact Second Vice- President Joe Ferruzza. Finally I congratulate Past State Deputy Joseph A. Cummings for finally being able to turnover his diocesan vocation duties to Michael Lynch. I know Joe was looking forward to relinquishing his duties and I know Mike will do a great job. There will be complimentary parking in the Trinity Hall lot. If you park elsewhere you must pay. When you arrive at the barrier past Old Main, press the help button, mention to are with the Knights of Columbus and the barrier will rise. Enter and follow the signs for Trinity Hall. The Union is halfway down Academic Walk. 3 Page 3 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INSURANCE RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT LIFE INSURANCE Each September since 2003 has been designated as Life Insurance Awareness Month. Like most awareness raising campaigns, Life Insurance Awareness Month was created because there is an overwhelming lack of understanding of life insurance, its uses, its benefits, and its variations among the general public. Each year, the Life Insurance Market Research Association (LIMRA) puts out the results from a recent survey, and unfortunately, the numbers they report continue to be discouraging. A recent survey found that more than 75 percent of people polled did not have a personal financial advisor, even though 68 percent of them said their opinion of the current economic conditions was somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable. In other words, a majority of those surveyed were uncomfortable with the economy and the uncertainty it brings, yet they did not seek professional assistance. Maybe they spoke with their friends and family. Maybe they hoped the instability would go away on its own. Maybe they did not know to whom to turn. If you fall into this category, please remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus, you have a full time, professional agent you can call your own. My primary responsibility is the care and service of your family s life insurance, retirement and long term care needs. I ll answer your questions because I want your decisions to be informed ones. I want to help. Another LIMRA statistic said 43 percent of people did not buy life insurance because they worry about making the wrong decision. Talk with me, your agent, and, afterwards, you ll understand that the only wrong decision was not purchasing sooner to protect your family s future. The new coordinator is former Pittsburgh Chapter President, Michael P. Mike Lynch, PGK, FDD. Mike will soon be updating all information regarding the seminarians in the Diocese of Pittsburgh including information on the eight new men entering the program this fall.
