Although this boat is owned by Captain Bob, he decided to dedicate it, and this month s honor to the memory John Fry our dear friend who we recently lost. This boat was purchased from Rob s R/C Hobbies in Westminster a few months ago. Read what Bob did to it, and why it won first place in the military class at the last I.N.S. Regatta
2 MAY 2014 BOAT OF THE MONTH CONTINUED As was said, this boat was purchased from Rob s R/C Hobbies in Westminster California. It was purchased from them because they had the best price anywhere. When Bob went to pick it up, and went home and opened it, he was really disappointed in the way that it looked. For the price that was paid for it, it looked too much like a cheaply built toy. The mast was too short, the flood lights were too big, and the red trim, and the red hardware was way too neon looking to satisfy Bob. Bob decided to take everything off the boat, and to start over. He took all the decals off, removed the mast, flood lights, and nearly everything else that didn t look too cool. The first thing he did was to replace the funky looking mast with something that looks a little more realistic.. He made a new mast from different pieces of styrene, mounted lights, and a working radar, and securely mounted it to the roof of the wheelhouse. Next Bob added a couple of winches fore and aft, a couple of cranes, barrels, drums, radar balls, made of Ping Pong Balls, radar base made from shirt buttons rope, chain, anti-slip flooring, and fenders. The last thing that Bob added to this boat was to give it a new name. It took almost no time at all to decide on the perfect name for his new boat. He decided to name it after our dear friend John Fry, who had recently passed away. Bob took his new pride and joy to the regatta that was recently held by I.N.S. (Inland Nautical Society), where he entered it the competition. He entered it in the navigation course, where he thought that he did pretty well, but it didn t win in that. But, it did win first place in the military class. Bob said that the boat won because of the memory of John Fry, and that was why he won. Bob dedicated the boat at the regatta to John, and also dedicated the award to the memory of our lost friend. Bob took his boat down to San Pedro later that week, and placed it I the water o take a more realistic shot of it with the Harbor in the back ground. Bob plans to go back to San Pedro later this month, and put in in the water directly across from the battleship the U.S.S. IOWA for an even more realistic shot. He thinks that it would look cool to have the Iowa in the background. When Bob first placed the boat the harbor, he attached the boat to the dock with a thin strand of fishing line to make it easy to push it back and forth for the perfect shot. He didn t realize how much the tiny dock that he was on moved when a ship created a wake as it passed by. That s right stop laughing! Bob was bent over trying to get his boat out of the water, when the wake from a very large container ship caused the dock to raise really high, and Bob to lose his balance and fall into the water. Boy! What you ll do for that perfect shot! THIS HONOR IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF JOHN T. FRY
3 MESSAGE FROM THE CAPTAIN Hello everyone! I hope that all of you are doing very well. First I would like to welcome,and thank the many people who have joined our club. According to our Treasurer Ron De Simone, we now have over 100 members. Wouldn t that be really awesome if they were all active? I m going to do my best to keep this short and sweet, but we do have a few things to talk about. A few months ago, we learned of the passing of our dear friend John Fry. I tried to notify everybody of the passing of John, but I failed to notify some people, and that was completely by my fault. I do apologize for that! We are falling into that habit again of not paying your dues. Ron says that several people are behind on their dues, and need to come forward. Our dues are only $20 per year, and that comes out to about $1.67 dollars per month. Where else can you go for that amount of money doing what you enjoy? If you are having financial difficulty, and $20 is really impossible to pay, than we understand. But, there are some people who sell boats, parts, and so on at the lake, and even go on R/C/ trips to the bay area, and still say that they cannot afford the dues. Yet another issue that we have, is that people are not paying attention to what they are doing when operating their boats. We have sad several collisions at the lake, where one of the parties was not paying attention, and nearly rammed into me, and did run into a sail boat. As I ve said before, we (The Club) will not mediate a solution or get involved if there is damage to somebody s boat because of not paying attention or any other reason. It will be completely up to the involved parties to settle this between themselves. Remember, fast movers belong on the east end of the lake directly across from where we meet. Don t forget that we are having our first ever swap-meet at my place located at 501 East Orangethorpe Avenue in the city of Anaheimk. This will be held in the club house. 4 IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOHN FRY By Capt. Bob Tiscareno Dear Friends, Maritime Modelers is very sad to announce the passing of long time member, and friend John Fry. John passed away from an apparent heart attack on Saturday March 15 th, 2014 A memorial service was held on Saturday March 22 nd 2014 at Life Center Church in Lakewood California, and attended by all those who knew and loved him. John was truly a master of his craft, having seen many of his boats in a visit to his home a couple of years ago, by Frank Milowicki and myself. I especially loved the military vessel that he had, where a jeep actually rolled out of the bow doors. My mouth hit the ground in amazement when I saw this, and it still remains there today, even after several years. Even after suffering another stroke a few years ago, John would still come to the meetings, having been brought by his loving wife Lynn, because he enjoyed the club, and his friends that much. John would always have a smile on his face, and would give you a hug no matter how bad he felt. John will truly be missed by all those individuals who knew, and loved him. He will continue to be missed. We love you John.
5 MARITIME MODELERS FIRST ANNUAL SWAP MEET BUY, SELL OR TRADE, BOATS, TOOLS, OR RADIOS, ETC. SNACKS SATURDAY JUNE, 7 th EAST ORANGETHORPE AVENUE ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA SODAS 9:00 A.M. UNTIL 3:00 P.M. This year, we will be holding our first annual swap meet. This year s event will be held at the residence of Captain Bob. It will be held in the club house. Look east for the American flag. That s the entrance to the clubhouse. There will be an entry fee for all sellers, and that fee will be $10 per area. Please R.S.V.P. with Captain (562) or him at robertt92801@aol.com Tables will be available, or bring your own. The club house will be open at 7:30 a.m. for set up. Coffee will be available for those individuals who need a little extra something in the morning to get going. Del Taco, Taco Bell, El Pollo Loco, Jack in the Box, In & Out, Burger King, is close by, or bring your own beverages and or snacks. Fees will be collected the morning of the event, but please contact Bob so that he has a general idea as to how many tables to set up. Seller fees will be donated to the club. This event is open to all members, and is also being extended to our neighboring clubs, and their members. Please pass the word along.
