1 LONDON SCHOOL OF HYGIENE & TROPICAL MEDICINE RECRUITMENT JOB EVALUATION FORM FOR A NEW RESEARCH FELLOW POST How to use this form This form should be completed by the line manager requiring an evaluation of a NEW post. This form has four sections: Section A: Core Research Fellow Role Requirements Section B: Additional Research Fellow Role Requirements Section C: Additional Evidence Section D: Declaration Section A details the core requirements of a Research Fellow role within the School. The section lists the responsibilities and types of tasks that all Research Fellows are expected to undertake. This section should not be changed in any way. After reading through Section A, if you are satisfied that the core accurately reflects requirements of the job description for the role you are wanting to recruit, go to Section D and sign off the form. If the requirements of the role do not fully reflect the job description proceed to Section B. Section B details additional Research Fellow role requirements, which are in addition to the core requirements. Read through the additional evidence and tick the boxes of any which are required for the role. Where requested, you will also need to indicate the frequency of the task or responsibility. If you are satisfied that the core requirements in Section A and the appropriate additional requirements in Section B reflect the job description for the role you are wanting to recruit, go to Section D and sign off the form. If there are any additional tasks or duties not listed in sections A or B, proceed to Section C. Section C allows you to add any additional tasks, duties or responsibilities that have not been covered in Sections A or B but are required of the role and detailed in the job description for the post. Once Section C has been completed proceed to Section D. Section D is the declaration of the form and asks you to confirm that the form and any information provided is a true and accurate representation of the post and reflects the duties and responsibilities detailed in the job description for the role. The completed form should now be passed to your Departmental Office to be confirmed by the Head of Department or Departmental Administrator. SECTION A: CORE RESEARCH FELLOW ROLE REQUIREMENTS 1. COMMUNICATION (ORAL) The Role Holder (RH) will be required to communicate about technical aspects of research, such as research processes, with line managers, other members of the research group and collaborators. The RH will be required to communicate with key stakeholders, (collaborators, funders, research participants) to gather and/or convey information via the telephone, face to face meetings or by conducting interviews. Understand and convey more complex aspects of the research process and explain findings to non-specialists and peers. Present research findings at scientific meetings, seminars and conferences. 1. COMMUNICATION (WRITTEN) The RH will be required to write research procedures, for example, guidelines, protocols on complex systems and research processes, and/or to write reports describing data analysis and results. Prepare research results for publication in scientific journals and draft/contribute to scientific papers. 2. TEAMWORK AND MOTIVATION Work closely with PIs of collaborative research projects, line managers, and colleagues within the research group. To agree tasks and objectives with the line manager. Motivate research partners to ensure deadlines are met. Demonstrate flexibility to help deliver research results. Work independently, but also support and encourage others within the team. To act as a role model to less experienced members of the team, as appropriate. 2

3 3. LIAISON AND NETWORKING Liaise with other members of School staff, outside the immediate work team to help build up expertise in the respective area of research. Participate in, and provide input to networks within the School. Liaise with research collaborators in other institutions related to project(s) about the development of work; data gathering and publication of results. Participate in scientific meetings and conferences. 4. SERVICE DELIVERY Responding to requests for information from colleagues, members of staff outside of the team, students or members of the public. Responding to requests from PIs and collaborators for progress on research projects. Provide a service to research collaborators by providing timely and accurate information about the progress of the work being undertaken by the School. 5. DECISION MAKING Authorise expenditure from a previously agreed budget or have the authority to decide on expenditures within agreed budgets, and by following the agreed budget lines, as appropriate. Decide on day to day decisions relating to carrying out research, guided by line manager. Take decisions in collaboration with other team members regarding project work plans. Play a part in collaborative decisions made by the research team about the research project. Provide advice and information to research partners on designing and conducting research. Contribute to decision making in relation to furthering research and action. Provide advice and information to senior team members to allow them to reach larger decisions about projects. 6. PLANNING AND ORGANISING RESOURCES Required to plan and prioritise work to ensure that research is completed on time, in agreement with line managers. Managing and being accountable for allocated research resources. 7. INITIATIVE AND PROBLEM SOLVING Solving problems associated with the project; for example, in relation to, resources, equipment and any safety issues, or finding solutions to design/analysis problems. And/or undertaking field or laboratory research in low income country settings and managing typical problems such as delays (due to equipment, staffing, logistics, in carrying out the field work. And/or undertaking laboratory work and managing unexpected problems with equipment, reagents or samples Identify possible new collaborators and sources of further funding for research projects. 3

4 8. ANALYSIS AND RESEARCH Carry out data checking and preparation for analysis and perform statistical analysis if appropriate. Research published literature relevant to the project and carry out analysis/critical reviews. And/or design research protocols and/or questionnaires to maximise the efficiency of data collection and analysis. 9. SENSORY AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS Use standard office equipment; photocopier, PC and use a keyboard for at least 50% of the time. And/or use complex laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, microscopes, flow cytometers, DNA sequencing apparatus etc. 10. WORK ENVIRONMENT The post holder will be working in an office based environment. Or the post holder will be working in an office and lab-based environment. Or the post holder will work mostly in their office/lab at the School, with occasional visits to collaborating centres overseas or in the UK. Or the post holder will be based overseas in a field/lab/office environment. 11. PASTORAL CARE AND WELFARE The post holder will show consideration to others and refer to the relevant people. 12. TEAM DEVELOPMENT The RH may be required to advise or guide new starters working in the same area on standard information and procedures, and explaining standard operating procedures. The RH may be involved in the training of new team members in areas of specialist skills, and provide the research group with training for example, in the use of models developed, experimental techniques and laboratory skills. The RH may be required to provide support to research partners in relation to the completion of the research project. 13. TEACHING AND LEARNING SUPPORT Provide standard information or basic instructions about research projects to students and/or others outside of the work team. RH will contribute to Masters and/or short course teaching by leading practical classes and seminars and/or through distance learning tutoring or and/or through tutoring on distance learning courses RH may prepare and deliver lectures and seminars and be involved in the preparation of teaching materials. 4

5 The RH will be expected to attend training courses in teaching as appropriate. 14. KWLEGE AND EXPERIENCE Post graduate degree (MSc, PhD) in XXXXXX or a related discipline or equivalent experience. Ability to apply working knowledge of theory and practice gained through academic studies and work experience. Demonstrated experience in analysis of data or experience of field research or laboratory research. Experience of overseeing the day to day running of research projects, or of being responsible for their own work plans and/or of supervising other members of project-related staff. Evidence of ability to write up research results, communicate findings and contribute to scientific papers. SECTION B: ADDITIONAL RESEARCH FELLOW ROLE REQUIREMENTS 2.
