1 Job Description Job title: Head of Academic Skills Resources Department/School: Academic Skills Centre (ASC) Grade: 8 Location: LTEO Job purpose To manage the academic skills resources, activities and operations of the Academic Skills Centre, ensuring that the elements of the Centre which support and interact with its core programmes operate efficiently and effectively, in order to contribute to the University s core strategic goals. To drive forward development, acquisition, delivery and publication of academic skills resources, ensuring that the programmes of academic and study skills related activity are suitably and adequately resourced according to the needs of students, as a result of liaison with key stakeholders in the University. The postholder will act as Deputy for the Director and contribute to the strategic overview of the ASC. This will be achieved, among other means, through the gathering and analysing of statistical material to inform the Director s efforts on the strategic direction setting of the ASC. The postholder will oversee the marketing, publicity and communications for all ASC activities, staffing and other HR issues, and will also maintain an overview of ASC finances and course uptake for the Academic Skills Resources Team, and report on these to the Director. The postholder will provide professional leadership to the Academic Skills Resources Team, taking responsibility for the management and development of its staff, implementing service standards and developing common systems and processes standardised on good practice. Source and nature of management provided Director of the Academic Skills Centre. Staff management responsibility 1. ASC Operations Manager (1.0 fte) 2. Social Programme and Student Welfare Manager (1.0 fte) 3. SALC Manager (1.0 fte) 4. IELTS Officer (0.45 fte) 5. Technology Enhanced Learning & Digital Resources Development Officer (1.0 fte) In addition the postholder will have overall staff management responsibility for all the staff (c23 members of staff, equivalent to c10 fte) who report to these posts. Career and Professional Development Activities The postholder will be required to engage in continuous professional development, consultancy and other forms of external engagement, as appropriate. 2 From time to time the postholder may be asked to assist in the facilitation of CPD activities. This will form part of the substantive role, and the postholder will not receive additional payment for these activities. Special conditions Because of the intensive nature of some of the ASC courses, and its teaching year currently comprising 43 teaching weeks, there may be occasions when the postholder is required to work overtime or on a University holiday. These will be offset by TOIL. Main duties and responsibilities 1 Leadership of Academic Skills Resources 1. Lead on the development, acquisition, delivery, development and publication of academic skills resources, based on student need. 2. Through leadership of SALC, Learning Resources, Academic Skills and the Social Programme, develop online resources and activities that offer direct learning opportunities and support for students seeking to enhance their study effectiveness, their academic skills and academic potential. 3. Through liaison with Directors of Studies, Senior Tutors, Student Services and the Library, and a principled analysis of student need, ensure that provision is inclusive and meets the needs of under-represented groups, and that targeted provision is delivered where appropriate. 4. Manage these different components of the ASC resources to develop a cohesive provision. Support and steer the leaders of these components and other colleagues to achieve educational goals. 2 Management and Policy Development 1. Be accountable for effective and efficient operation of activities and resources within the ASC, including academic and study skills workshops and resources, all web resources, marketing and publicity, staffing, SALC, IELTS and the Social Programme. Instigate and lead all necessary actions to develop and maintain the sustainability of the wider Centre and its programmes. 2. Manage the demands and expectations of external customers (agents, partner institutions, etc.) and internal stakeholders within the University in relation to academic and study skills resource provision, by pre-empting their needs and identifying opportunities to change and improve what the ASC provides. 3. Lead, manage and direct the resource and administration teams under your management to support all aspects of ASC Programme delivery. 4. Lead and manage projects (which might be complex in terms of financial resources, time or the people involved) within the ASC to ensure that the ASC s service delivery objectives are met. 5. Provide leadership in ensuring an effective working relationship between the Pre-sessional and In-sessional teams and the SALC Manager, IELTS Officer, Social Programme and Student Welfare Manager, Digital Resources & Development Officer and administrative staff within the ASC. 6. Generate, manipulate and analyse management information on programmes, students, applicants, etc. to support strategic planning and management. Head of Academic Skills Resources JD/PS Page

3 7. Deputise for ASC Director as and when appropriate. 3 Strategic 1. Lead the development of resources and student facing activities in support of the development of academic skills, study skills and students academic achievement. 2. Implement monitoring systems for participation on the above described activities, to explore patterns of engagement, and engagement by groups with strategically important characteristics (e.g. widening participation students). 3. Develop well established links with Directors of Studies, Senior Tutors and Professional Services in order to inform the work of the programmes and provision within ASC. 4. Monitor and evaluate existing resource provision of the ASC, keeping abreast through feedback and developments within the University and, more broadly, within the sector, to ensure that appropriate developments and innovative solutions are provided to enhance and maximise service provision. 5. Shape the strategic direction of English Language and Academic Skills provision, initiating and managing change, and organising the activities of others to support ASC and LTEO objectives. 6. Provide the ASC Director with analysis of statistical data to inform strategic planning. 7. Use this planning and strategic objectives to advise Heads of Pre-sessional and In-sessional with regard to recruitment of students for the summer Pre-sessional and ELAC Programmes. 8. Produce reports for ASC, LTEO and University-wide consideration. 4 Quality Assurance 1. Develop an internal structure for quality benchmarking, setting of recruitment and achievement targets and an annual reporting mechanism that takes into account external (peer) comparison where possible. 2. Liaise with relevant accrediting bodies and oversee successful accreditation by such bodies. 3. Develop standards and codified expectations on matters of confidentiality, data recording and reporting and liaison with other central services and departments in relation to information regarding individual students (both in terms of confidentiality and action in case of serious welfare concerns). 4. Be accountable for quality and enhancement of ASC learning and web resources, setting up and overseeing systems, criteria and processes to support quality management. 5. Be accountable for the social and linguistic integration and welfare of students on ASC programmes through the ASC Social Programme. 4 5 Resources 1. Be responsible for ensuring the provision of high quality student-facing resources for all University students and staff regarding academic skills development. 2. Be accountable to the Director of ASC, and ultimately the Director of LTEO, for resources and budgets for the teams and provision for which you are responsible, with discretion to make decisions or judgements which support the viability and sustainability of the ASC. This includes contributing to the ASC annual operational and budgetary planning process. 3. Through excellent communication with academic and professional services departments across the University, ensure that ASC programmes and activities are using University resources efficiently while keeping in line with the University s core strategic goals. 6 Human Resources 1. Oversee ASC s HR administration, policy and processing for staff at Grade 7 or below. 2. Manage change for the team for which you are responsible, following University HR policies and advice and guidance. Support, facilitate and advise those direct reports and other colleagues on how to solve issues and to develop the team and individuals. 3. Monitor the management, development and support of ASC staff at Grade 7 or below, including the Teaching Fellows (core and part-time) in line with HR policies in all aspects of their work at the ASC. 4. Oversee the effective operational management by the Operations Manager of the following human resources aspects: Contracts (flexible contracting specifically) Teaching fellow recruitment Teaching fellow development and training Terms and conditions Teachers workspace To achieve this the post-holder will work closely with the two Heads of Presessional and In-sessional, the SALC Manager, and HR: 5. Ensure that all staff are effectively appraised through SDPR. 7 Marketing and Communications 1. Shape and oversee the marketing, publicity and communications for all ASC activities and operations. 2. Devise and implement strategies for marketing, including fostering relations with partner institutions, agents, embassies etc. 3. Ensure that the ASC webpages are maintained to a high quality and interface effectively with all the ASC users, external and internal facing. 4. Promote the ASC within the University, maintaining excellent communications with University stakeholders regarding the ASC and its activities. Head of Academic Skills Resources JD/PS Page

Provide expert advice and guidance across a number of teams and/or projects across the ASC, LTEO and University as a whole, co-ordinating the work of others, as appropriate, to achieve project objectives.
