1 WESTERN MASS 4-H WINTER WORKSHOP Saturday, January 24, 2015 Hopkins Academy, Route 9, 131 Russell St, Hadley, MA Numerous workshops will be offered to 4-H members, leaders, and parents/chaperones! Workshops to be offered include: Animal Science Healthy Lifestyles Cheese-Making 4-H Records Riding Beyond 4-H And many more! If you sign up for the entire day, your County 4-H Advisory Council- Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire and Worcester-will cover $10 of your $20 fee. Your final cost=$10/person (includes lunch). If you have any questions, there will be someone in the cafeteria available to help you. We hope you enjoy the workshops! Hopkins Academy, Route 9, 131 Russell St, Hadley, MA The 4-H Winter Workshop offers hands-on learning for youth and leaders in many popular project areas. The workshop is open to all Berkshire, Franklin; Hampden, Hampshire and Worcester county 4-H youth ages 8-18 as of 1/1/15 and volunteers. Members ages 8-11 as of 1/1/15 must have an adult chaperone/parent attending (Adult does not have to be registered for the same workshops as the youth). The registration fee is $5 per workshop or $20 for the entire day per person including lunch. Registrations should be postmarked no later than Monday, January 12, All registration fees are nonrefundable unless the entire workshop is cancelled due to weather. Please make checks payable to Hampshire County 4-H Advisory Council. Those who register early have first preference. If there are not enough people registered, a class may be cancelled. Early registration is encouraged. Please indicate 1 st and 2 nd choices for each session. All proceeds will go the Hampshire County 4-H Advisory Council to help offset the cost of this event and for scholarships and camperships. Display area: If your club would like to set up an exhibit, or has brochures about upcoming 4-H events that may be of interest to other 4-H members, please a description to Tom Waskiewicz for approval. We would be glad to help spread the word and show off your work. Workshop Descriptions (Some class sizes are limited. The Babysitting Course participants should sign up for all four Babysitting workshops. ) 1. Making a Centerpiece- You will leave with a centerpiece made of fresh, dried and silk materials. Led by Anne Blizniak, 4-H Volunteer 2. Poultry Management-Covers housing, disease, breeds and predator prevention. Led by Sandy Brougham, Leader of the Fantastic Farmers 4-H Club 3. 4-H 101- provides a general overview to guide 4-H Youth Professionals and volunteers to understanding the structure, best practices and guidelines for organizing 4-H clubs. Led by Tom Waskiewicz, 4-H Educator 4. Babysitting I, Safety-Police and Fire Department officials will discuss phone etiquette, dealing with strangers, responding to fires and other safety related issues. Led by local firefighters and police 5. Visual Presentations-This workshop will cover options for VP topics, time requirements, tips for a successful VP, what the judges look for, as well as the development of posters and effective VP props. Led by Anne Blizniak, 4-H Volunteer

4 6. Horse Care Basics 101-Considering buying a horse? Already own a horse and maybe aren't sure of what they really need from you to stay healthy? We will provide information that will help you understand the responsibility that comes with horse ownership. Bring questions! We will help. Led by Kelli Marie Wainscott, 4-H Volunteer 7. Promote the 4 th H for your club Promote the 4th H for Health! Lead the way by learning fun, interactive ideas for physical activity and snacks to use with your club. You can qualify to receive 4 th H for Health pins and a club certificate by taking on this challenge. Come hear about the success of other 4-Hers and bring the enthusiasm back to your own club. We would love to feature your success story on our web site. Led by Karen Fullerton, MEd, RD- Senior Regional Project Coordinator, Healthy Kids Out of School 8. Optical Illusion-Learn some of the science behind optical illusion and make your own for someone to try. (Open to all ages). Led by Kim Pond, 4-H Educator 9. Babysitting II-Practice basic first-aid. Covers minor injuries, choking, cuts, bruises, poisoning and how to make a first-aid kit. Led by the Hadley Elementary School Nurse 10. How to Make Cheese-Learn about making your own healthy, homemade Ricotta cheese. It is fast, and easier than you think! Led by Carrie Cranston, 4-H Volunteer 11. Riding beyond 4-H-It is never too early to start thinking about college! Did you know that many college programs will allow you to bring your horse to school with you? Maybe that is not an option for you, but you want to keep riding while in high school or college. Many barns are forming IEA teams, and many colleges offer IHSA and NCAA riding programs! We will help explain many of these programs, how they work, and how you can get involved. Led by Kelli Marie Wainscott, 4-H Volunteer 12. Wired for FUN-Explore the Magic of Electricity. Learn simple circuits, how to make a switch and your own battery holder. (Open to all ages) Limit 24. Led by Kim Pond, 4-H Educator 13. Show Ribbon Projects-Are you wondering what do you with the rosettes and ribbons that you have won through the years? In this workshop, we will be making a ribbon project and we will also explore some other projects for you to start at home. We will supply you with patterns for the other projects. You will need to bring a glue gun with at least a dozen single ribbons and a few rosettes that you do not mind cutting. You will receive an reminder on the supplies when we get closer to the forum date. Led by Carrie Sears- Director of Community Education in Animal Agriculture University of Massachusetts Amherst 14. Babysitting III-Discuss what activities are appropriate for certain ages, the Seven Principles of Discipline and common behavioral issues. Led by Tom Waskiewicz, 4-H Educator H Records-For the beginner to seasoned 4-H er, this interactive presentation will "walk" club members through documenting their 4-H club year, completing each section of the Record, accurately entering financial data and enriching the "4-H Story". Previous Blue Ribbon records will be available for review. Led by Mary Phelon, 4-H Educator and Anne Blizniak, 4-H Volunteer 16. Zentangle-The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Anyone can use it to create beautiful images. It increases focus and creativity, provides artistic satisfaction along with an increased sense of personal well being. Led by Susan Shea-Bressette of the Belchertown Senior Center 17. Put the Science in Animal Science- Put a fun spin on teaching animal science by adding fun and games into your meetings. Learn techniques that can be adapted to use with any species of animal to teach all ages of participants. Participants will leave with take home ideas and ready to use plans for meetings. Science projects related to animal science such as how AI works or how a stomach works are covered. Led by Carrie Sears- Director of Community Education in Animal Agriculture University of Massachusetts Amherst 18. Birds, Spring and Citizen Science-Tired of Winter and looking forward to Spring? Come learn about birds, migration, habitats and some cool citizen science you can do. (Open to all ages, but best for 8+). Led by Kim Pond, 4-H Educator 19. Babysitting IV-Learn what foods are appropriate and how to feed a newborn, infant, toddler and pre-schooler. Thinking safety first. You will discuss food preparation, servings, allergies and how to make nutritious snacks. Led by a UMass Nutritionist
