3 The engineer: a decision-maker! Engineers not only act as designers and implementers, they act as managers who take part in making purchase decisions for their company. Founded in 1920, the Ordre des ingénieures du Québec now boasts a membership of over 60,000 engineering professionals across all disciplines, with the exception of forest engineers. The term engineer refers to any accredited (permit-holding) member of the Ordre who is allowed to provide professional services in accordance with the title. Jonathan Lipsitz, étudiant en génie chimique à l Université McGill. print PLAN magazine Streng.th Volume 17, no 2 - Spring 2012 The Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec and its foundation present over $60,000 in awards and scholarships to engineering students The primary objective of the OIQ awards and fellowships program is to promote the ideal of excellence in engineering. One segment of this policy is to encourage the next generation of engineers. In this segment, the OIQ recognizes the efforts to achieve excellence of particular engineering students whose academic record and social and community commitment reflect the values of the profession. At the same time, this segment helps publicize and promote both the profession and its values. Every year, a competition is organized to honour three students who, as members of the OIQ s Student Section, have distinguished themselves by both their social commitment and their successful engineering studies at a Quebec university. Candidates are asked to write a short essay on the professional responsibility of engineers. The names of the 2012 winners were announced at a reception held on Wednesday, March 21. 1st Prize Student Award of Merit $7,500 Anne-Marie Lanouette realized the importance of volunteering while in secondary school and has been involved in community activities for the past ten years. Her social commitment now focuses on popularizing science and conveying knowledge: she is responsible for volunteers and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Folie Technique day camp of the École Polytechnique, and Anne-Marie Lanouette, mechanical engineering student at the École Polytechnique de Montréal. she hosts scientific activities for young people during the school year. Anne-Marie Lanouette has won numerous prizes in science competitions, including the 2010 national prize of Excelle Science, after which she agreed to become cybermentor to the young women who participate in this competition. In 2011 she won a prize for the best Mechanical Engineering Integrative II Project at the Polytechnique, a project she had begun in 2010 while doing an internship at the school s Laboratoire de mécanique multi-échelles (LM2). She has a cumulative average of 3.98/4.3, and this high quality academic has record earned her a number of scholarships, including an NSERC undergraduate research fellowship in nd Prize Student Award of Merit, presented by Engineers Canada and TD Insurance Meloche Monnex $5,000 Dépôt légal - Bibliothèque nationale du Québec, 2012, ISSN Jonathan Lipsitz, chemical engineering student, had a virtually perfect cumulative average of 3.93/4.0. Ladite politique prévoit un volet encouragement de la relève universitaire. Par l intermédiaire de ce volet, l Ordre vise à recon naître le souci d excellence de certains étudiants en génie dont les résultats universitaires et l engagement social et communautaire témoignent des valeurs de la profession. Il s agit également de faire connaître et de promouvoir la profession et ses valeurs. Chaque année, un concours est organisé afin de récompenser trois étudiants, membres de la Section étudiante de l Ordre, qui se sont distingués par leur engagement social, tout en ayant eu du succès dans leurs études en génie dans un établissement universitaire du Québec. Les candidats doivent rédiger un court essai sur «La responsabilité professionnelle de l ingénieur». Les noms des lauréats de 2012 ont été dévoilés au cours d un cocktail qui a eu lieu le mercredi 21 mars dernier. 1 er Prix universitaire du Mérite $ Anne-Marie Lanouette a été sensibi lisée à l importance du bénévolat au cours de ses études secondaires et prend part à des activités communautaires depuis une dizaine d années. L engagement social d Anne-Marie est maintenant axé vers la vulgarisation scientifique et la transmission des connaissances ; elle est responsable des bénévoles et présidente studentsection.oiq.qc.ca du conseil d administration du camp de jour scientifique Folie Technique de l École Polytechnique, et elle anime des activités scienti fiques destinées aux jeunes pendant l année scolaire. Anne-Marie Lanouette a remporté de nombreux prix à des concours à caractère scientifique, notamment le prix du volet national du concours Excelle Science, en 2010 ; elle a par la suite accepté de devenir cybermentore pour les jeunes femmes participant à ce concours. Elle a en outre obtenu en 2011 un prix pour le meilleur Projet intégrateur III en génie mécanique de Polytechnique, projet qu elle a entrepris en 2010 au cours d un stage au Laboratoire de mécanique multi-échelles (LM2) de Polytechnique. La moyenne cumulative de cette lauréate est de 3,98/4,3.
