Both emphasized the critical importance of BSN. Linda announce d that Vidant received Magnet status on July 15, and she offered tours to attendees. The newest addition to the health system is a new children s hospital, children s emergency department, and an in-hospital Ronald McDonald House. Vidant is planning a new cancer institute for the area. Judy Neubrander, Director of WCU School of Nursing, announced the receipt of a HRSA Workforce Diversity grant that will include partnering with 6 high schools in the Cullowhee area. 1

2 ECU also has a HRSA grant focusing on families dealing with chronic disease. The project will emphasize technology including a virtual clinic and case studies from diverse populations. Renee Batts reported on the College of the Albermarle initiative to increase RN to BSN progression. Karen Stallings distributed the list of Clinical Site Development Grants across North Carolina. Linda Hofler reported that Vidant is offering career counseling to employed RNs to help them identify steps to return to school. Eastern North Carolina RIBN Collaborative Kellie Cleaton, MaEd, Student Success Advocate, Successes and Challenges to Date reviewed the academic and preadmission requirements for RIBN. ENC RIBN began its first cohort of 10 students in Fall, There are currently 7 of these enrolled. The 2 nd cohort began in Fall 2013 with 24 students. Kellie reported an increase in the diversity of applicants in Cohort 2. She noted that ENC RIBN uses an online application. She described community building exercises with students. She identified the following challenges: (1) recruit disadvantaged students in high school; (2) rural eastern NC distance (example: Roanoke- Chowan Comm. College is the greatest distance from Greenville and is the most difficult to recruit students); (3) logo and marketing; (4) curriculum design for 5 community colleges. Kellie noted that the greatest need is more scholarship funds for students. 2

3 CNO Survey on Educational Progression Report Karen Stallings reported that the first CNO survey was conducted in 2012 with 29 responses. In 2013, new questions were developed with a survey design that would not take longer than 5 minutes to complete. The 2013 survey was ed to 120 CNOs by the NC Hospital Association with 50 responses (42%). Karen thanked Mary Shuler for helping to create this survey. The goals of the survey were (1) provide a snapshot of BSN and higher degree prepared nurses employed in NC hospitals,(2) describe employer goals to increase the percentage of BSN and higher degree prepared nurses, (3) describe the current strategies to increase BSN and higher degrees in NC workforce, and (4) maximize response by using a survey that takes less than 5 minutes to complete. Karen noted (1) 1/3 of the respondents indicated that 16-30% of current RNs were BSN or higher degree prepared; (2) 80% of respondents indicated that their institution had a plan to increase the percent of BSN prepared RNs; (3) 80% of respondents have targeted goals for increasing BSN prepared RNs; (4) 97% of respondents offer tuition reimbursement for nurses wishing to pursue a BSN. Discussion among attendees noted the need to follow up regarding the criteria for receiving tuition reimbursement across NC. The need for a survey regarding tuition reimbursement or assistance for graduate level education was noted also. Updates: Building the Common Course Catalog for RN- BSN state-funded programs Gail Mazzocco reported on the progress in developing a uniform, statewide academic progression agreement between the public university and community college system to promote educational advancement opportunities to assist the RN to complete the BSN or higher degree. 3 Results will be posted on the FFNE website and the Future of Nursing website. See attached scanned handout for questions and responses.

4 Updates: Building the Common Course Catalog for RN-BSN state-funded programs (Continued) Contributors to the proposal include a subgroup of the Coalition s BSN and Higher Degree Taskforce, state RN to BSN program directors, and university and community college stakeholders. Having a common core of required courses acceptable both to the 11 UNC system RN to BSN programs and the community college system would smooth the educational pathway for RNs who have earned AAS degrees in nursing in North Carolina and wish to complete a BSN degree in the state. The model presented has been reviewed and is supported by UNC General Administration and by NC Community College System administration. It is now being assessed and responded to by the 11 state RN to BSN programs and by the directors of the NC Community College Associate Degree programs. Gail explained the four part model: See attached handout. Block 1: Nursing Pre-requisites (23-26 credits) Block 2: General Education (33-36 credits) Block 3: Nursing Courses completed in AAS Program (30-34 credits) Block 4: Nursing Courses in the RN to BSN program (remaining credits) Updates: RIBN Connect for Success Initiatives Polly explained the template developed by Jennifer Mashburn of MAHEC but planned for statewide replication. Two activities have been provided for the WNC RIBN region students. Each activity has 3 components: (1) Highlighting a professional organization; (2) Presenting a group of local nursing professionals to discuss their roles and career path; and (3) Student experiential activity. 5 Updates: RIBN Update/Sustainability Impact Initiative Reports of Small Work Groups: Building the Common Course Catalog for RN-BSN state-funded programs Polly Johnson and Pat Hayes described the Sustaining Impact Initiative (SII) provided by Partners Investing in Nursing s Future. NC RIBN was one of 12 selections in the United States. Recipients were selected based on readiness and availability for participation The SII will provide a supportive, interactive, and empowering format to help PIN partnerships achieve success in developing and implementing plans for sustained impact, including measurable results and efficient, effective methods. The SII will be completed over a six-month period (June 2013 through December 2013). Anita Tesh reported that this small group is encouraged yet recognizes that challenges remain. The group discussed and replied to 4 questions during lunch. The questions and summary replies follow: Looking at the 4 block model we have been discussing identify: 1. Models greatest strengths: It is simple and straight forward; The block system attempts to bypass some of the problems that have arisen in earlier attempts. It should be doable-it should meet SACS accreditation requirements Blocks 3 and 4 are not a problem at all. 2. Significant challenges are: dealing with students from the community colleges who attended while the quarter system was still in place Math 140 may be transferred in but it does not meet the statistics pre-req. Therefore, students would still have to take college algebra. It may be best to list college algebra. 5 The toolkit components developed thus far include a Mission, Vision, Value Statement, and RIBN Definition document that was distributed to all in attendance. Other RIBN replication documents are already on the FFNE RIBN website including the Replication Guidelines, sample Articulation Agreements, Dual Admission Criteria, Curriculum, RIBN Option Overview, SSA job description, Partnerships Map, Business Case Analysis, and a Template for Employing RIBN Students Following Year 3. See for these toolkit materials.

6 Reports of Small Work Groups Continued: Block two will require significant work -may need more or different courses. Polly Johnson and Gail Mazzocco will present the proposal to the NCCCS/UNC GA workgroup on Building the Common Course Catalog for RN-BSN state-funded programs Need some way to add flexibility to Block two without destroying the effort. October 14. This group will guide the development of an articulation agreement related to this work. Continued 3. Ways around challenges Work with registrar Control as much as possible within nursing. Negotiation 4. Are there any deal breakers? Some school may find the negotiation harder than others. No one saw the process as impossible. Developing RN mentorship program for RIBN students Courtney Caiola led the continuing discussion of how best to set up a regional RN mentoring program for RIBN students, as per their request. The small group recommends a virtual, flexible mentoring model. Eastern NC RIBN has agreed to pilot this approach. They will create a bank of mentors from the ECU Pirate alumnae. In addition to the virtual community within the private Facebook page that already exists, the mentoring will also include face to face activities through events planned by the SSA Kellie Cleaton. The plan is to offer this to RIBN Year 2 students in Spring Future plans include using RIBN graduates to serve as mentors to new RIBN students. While there is no statewide RIBN Facebook page, each RIBN region is developing a private Facebook page. 6

7 Reports of Small Work Groups Continued: Mae Mills reported on the importance of Efforts to increase diversity in our future strengthening partnerships with target groups such nursing workforce as the military to increase diversity. Linda Hofler suggested the development of a toolkit for use in presentations to community groups regarding nursing as a profession. Kathy Clark reported that each AHEC has a presentation targeting middle schools. This kit contains poster board, puppets, script, etc. Linda noted the need to use technology in presentations and to identify and train staff within organizations to be able to present to diverse groups. Crystal Harris reported that NCBON has an app for smart phone and that the website now has a photo that emphasizes diversity. Other resources include the RWJF Initiative on the Future of Nursing and Johnson and Johnson Campaign for Nursing s Future. On Friday, April 5, WCU School of Nursing will host a major conference on diversity. Next Steps Polly Johnson reviewed the BSN and Higher Degree Goal Statement and Major Strategies. In relation to the strategy to create a seamless educational progression system from LPN/AND to DNP/PhD, Renee Batts reported that Rowan Cabarrus Community College will be the lead organization from Oct. 1 June 30 to review the LPN curriculum and develop a concept based curriculum. Plans are to take this product to the state board for approval in the fall of 2014 with implementation to follow in fall, This may then become the baseline for developing an LPN-BSN RIBN program. Polly & the group discussed the need for a discussion on the complex topic of risk factors, & diversity issues in relation to selection, on-time completion, &NCLEX scores for nursing students. Further explore the possibility of developing an LPN-BSN RIBN pathway as the work on a standardized, concept-based curriculum moves forward. 7

8 Next Steps - Continued Anita Tesh posed the question of extent to which this group is connecting with high school guidance answers. Polly Johnson replied that this is done regionally by the Student Success Advocates.
