Wortock, Retired Dean College of Nursing, St. Petersburg College With Gratitude to: Dr. Thomas E. Furlong, Jr., Policy Institute Consultant Kay Burniston, SPC Vice President Baccalaureate Programs
St. Petersburg College SPC is the oldest 2, now 4, year college in Florida 80+ years Comprehensive Community College mission
Historical Perspective Unique Needs of Pinellas County: Employers identified need for IT managers, teachers, and BSN prepared nurses Pinellas 67 of 67 counties in Baccalaureate access and degree completion Geographically unique - a peninsula with heavy traffic volume AS graduates with a high need for a smooth AS to BAS or BSN transfer option
State Response Community College System (CCS) strategic plan on Baccalaureate access solutions Branches; partnerships; distance learning; community colleges directly (Florida 49 th ; Pinellas 67 th among counties) Two hundred AS programs statewide and only five AS to Bachelor s articulation agreements
State & Federal Response Legislature chose to also support a few niche Bachelor s directly in high need areas; IT (22,000) Nursing (critical shortage) Teacher Education (162,000 shortage in ten years) Federal funding support for online and partnership development at St. Petersburg College (Project Eagle)
SPC s Challenges How to implement Bachelor s and be true to historical CC mission of workforce, 2+2, remedial and University Partnership missions? How to expand the open-door, keep instruction as a top priority, approach to a 4-year model? How to serve our community with 4-year bachelor s in high demand areas?

Finance Formula Fees less than SUS, more than fees in our 2-year programs CCS approach now at 85% of SUS upper division
Admissions Additional Recruiters Recruiting in the following areas: Corporate, hospitals, school districts Pasco Hernando CC and SPC campuses; other area community colleges Multiple CC in FL wanted SPC articulation agreements for upper division courses and degrees New admission form supplement for current SPC students
