8 1) State or Regional Common Curriculum Educational collaboratives between universities and community colleges Students transition automatically and seamlessly from AD to BSN program All schools share curriculum, simulation facilities and faculty Reduces faculty workload Schools make greater use of resources 8

9 Example New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium One state curriculum for all schools of nursing to use Shared state faculty pool BSN curriculum offered at all participating schools BSN degree awarded by UNM or New Mexico State University Student can obtain BSN degree without leaving home 9

12 3) Community Colleges Grant BSN Degrees Florida College System Offers BSN degrees on 14 campuses Provides an improved and seamless academic pathway Community College Advantages Educate most nurses, so can become major BSN producer Offer wider geographic reach Moderate costs Diverse student bodies Large infrastructure AD nurses can work while pursuing higher degree 12

13 4) RN-to-MSN Programs Enable AD-prepared nurses to move into leadership, teaching, advanced practice or research roles UNC-Chapel Hill Students admitted as graduate students and take 3 online BSN competency bridge courses MA program offers variety of concentrations Students can complete program in two years Encourage AD-prepared nurses to return to school for better employment, opportunity and salaries 13

14 Successful Education Progression Programs Characteristics 1) BSN completed in no more than 4 academic years 2) Budget demonstrates fiscal viability of program change 3) Student cost benefit analysis 4) Plan for seeking national accreditation 5) Legislative analysis; regulatory and political barriers 6) Substantive curricular transformation 7) Dual admission processes if applicable 8) Strong evaluation plan projecting data gathering and analysis strategies 9) State scholarships available to support initial and RN-to-BSN education 14

16 Replicating Promising Solutions Nursing education programs must leverage existing relationships and engage partners: deans and directors community college president or university provost hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, etc. Establish trust with partners by defining shared goals early on Seek funding, in-kind support or grants from partners Reduce bureaucratic hurdles between academic institutions 16
