2 Doctoral Degrees: Enrollment in DNP programs grew 62% between 2011 and 2013 Between 2010 and 2013, the number of DNP graduates nearly doubled PhD, tiny growth/stagnant Faculty Vacancies up 47.1% 4 RWJF Future of Nursing Scholars Program Diverse cadre of PhD prepared nurses who are committed to long term leadership careers Offers financial support, mentoring, leadership development activities and postdoctoral research funding Grants given to schools of nursing 5 Success in the States: Minnesota: Dual enrollment between community colleges and universities Texas: Distance education to increase capacity of RN to BSN education program New Jersey: Long term Care residency program for new nurses 6 2

3 Removing Barriers to Practice and Care: Six states have achieved full practice and prescriptive authority since the Campaign began Four states have made incremental improvements since the Campaign began AARP has big role. MI and NJ pending Number of nurse led clinics increased between 2011 and 2013, from 132 to Removing Barriers Examples: Connecticut: Law enables full practice. Eliminates collaborative practice requirement for APRNs with 3 or more years of practice experience Kentucky: Law allows APRNs with 4 or more years of experience to prescribe routine medications without being required to have written agreement with physician Nevada: Law allows NPs to practice to full extent of their education and training 8 Leadership: Percent of hospital boards with RN members has declined (6% to 5%) from nurses on boards (ACs), up from 105 in January ,000 Nurses on Boards Nurse Leaders on Boards National Coalition 9 3

Suffering from dearth of data National Workforce Commission never funded 14 Workforce Data Collection: Many states challenged to get accurate workforce data on numbers and types of health professionals Forum leading national effort to get states to collect a standardized data set Need to analyze data in timely manner and make it publically available 15 5
