3 Illinois College & University Professional Association for Human Resources And the Illinois Higher Education Consortium on Human Capital Dress: Business Casual Present Fall 2015 Conference Day 1: Wednesday, October 14, 2015 Location: Dvorak Concert Hall, Doudna Fine Arts Center, Eastern Illinois University 9:30 10:30 a.m. Continental Breakfast and Registration Please visit the SPONSOR EXPO 10:30 10:35 a.m. Welcome 10:35 Noon (Session #1) Workplace Culture The Culture Equation Despite years of effort and an incalculable amount of money spent in the effort, companies are learning the difficult lesson that culture cannot be easily changed and formed. Engagement surveys, leadership retreats and ice cream socials are all futile attempts to make a significant shift. Real change must come in the way of reinvention, as a company is stripped to its core and built back up. Only then can fundamental changes be made, allowing new tools and thought patterns to change the way your business operates. In this session, The Culture Equation, we look at the critical components of workplace culture and how they work together. Through elements of Game Theory, we look at the role of individuals and leaders to influence the path of culture change, and then examine steps to be taken to influence the culture we are trying to create. Attendees will walk away with behavior-specific instructions on how to change the world around them. Recertification /Learning Objectives: Review the process of building culture, and the components from the functional areas of HR that have a major impact. (Strategic Management - Responsibilities #9, #10) Create an awareness of the difficulties in changing the culture of an organization, and the critical steps that must be taken to get started. (Employee and Labor Relations - Responsibilities #2, #3) Define the role of HR and of leadership in changing and owning culture, the impact it has on business, and how to leverage it into a competitive advantage. (HR Development - Responsibilities #9, Employee and Labor Relations - Knowledge #58) Presenter: Dwane Lay, Vice President of Customer Experience, Dovetail Software and President of Lean HR and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) for one credit. SHRM QTHP October 14, 2015

4 Noon 1:00 p.m. Lunch 1:00 2:00 p.m. (Session #2) Higher Education as a Context for Workplace Bullying: An Action Plan for Human Resource Professionals Organizational norms associated with high-performance expectations, discourse between employees, and the interdependence of coworkers' actions each contribute to an organizational environment with positive results, as well as the dangerous possibility of bullying. By design, managers are responsible for interpreting expectations of performance and behavior from practices, policy, and top management to the individual employees. In this session, Dr. Wollan will discuss her research related to workplace bullying and steps managers can take in four dimensions, and include a discussion of the role of HR professionals in supporting managers efforts in each of the dimensions. First, preventative measures will be outlined. Next the work environment including organizational culture, communication styles and structural elements will be discussed. Third, an assessment of managers themselves including their behaviors will be evaluated, followed with an action plan for intervening and possible remedies to alleviate a bullying crisis. Presenter: Melody Wollan, Associate Chair, Coordinator of Graduate Business Studies, and Associate Professor of Management in the School of Business, Eastern Illinois University and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) for one credit. SHRM 1 15-EKUNA October 14, :00 3:00 p.m. (Session #3) Leading with the Head This presentation will address the three key skills necessary for effective negotiation, with a focus on the centerpiece skill: creating value. Participants will do a short role-play negotiation, and then use that activity as the basis for a discussion of why negotiation is so important as an everyday influence and conflict management skill, and what it takes to do it more effectively. Participants will learn how to use negotiation strategies, skills, and tactics not only in formally defined negotiation situations but also in everyday life situations where differences in preferences and values must be managed. Presenters: Gregory Northcraft, Associate Dean of Faculty, College of Business, University of Illinois; Harry J. Gray, Professor of Executive Leadership, Professor, School of Labor & Employee Relations, and Director of the Office of Research, University of Illinois and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) for one credit. SHRM 1 15-O134M October 14, :00 3:15 p.m. Break and SPONSOR EXPO

5 3:15 4:15 p.m. (Session #4) Discovering Your Talents and Developing Your Strengths In this session Jami Painter and Wayne Stahl will debrief you on your individual assessments results and illustrate how you can use the results for self-improvement. You will learn how this quick, easy, and positive approach to assess individual and team talents can be used to strengthen your organization. Results from the assessments may be used by individuals and teams to leverage their talents in areas where they can provide their best contributions. It will help leaders to assign talent to multidimensional project teams. Based on the ground breaking work of Donald O. Clifton, PhD and Tom Rath, the Gallup organization conducted millions of assessments and benchmarked results for over 40 years. Recent Gallup research focused on the talents of leaders which resulted in the book, Strength Based Leadership. Presenters: Jami Painter, Assistant Vice President for Human Resources, University of Illinois; Wayne Stahl, Sr. Director, HR Strategy and Programs of Organizational Effectiveness, University of Illinois and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) for one credit. SHRM JAS October 14, :15 4:30 p.m. Closing Remarks Jami Painter, Assistant Vice President for Human Resources, University of Illinois Eric Smith, Assistant Vice President, Equal Opportunity and Human Resources, University of Illinois 4:30 6:00 p.m. Hotel check-in and relaxation 6:30 p.m. Dinner Dirties (on your own)

6 Day 2: Thursday, October 15, 2015 Location: Grand Ballroom, MLK Jr. Union, Eastern Illinois University 7:00 8:00 a.m. Group exercise: Walk around campus 8:30 9:00 a.m. Continental Breakfast and SPONSOR EXPO 9:00 9:15 a.m. Welcome 9:15 10:15 a.m. (Session #5) Efficient Human Resource Compliance The U.S. Federal Sentencing Guidelines are the foundation of corporate and higher education compliance programs. According to the Guidelines, an effective compliance program exercises due diligence to prevent and detect criminal conduct and otherwise promotes an organizational culture that encourages ethical conduct and a commitment to compliance with the law. While those words sound good, translating them into an executable action plan is a challenge. This presentation takes on that challenge in three distinct ways. First, we will identify and discuss ten key steps you can take to help build effective compliance into your organization s business operations. Second, we will operationalize the ten key steps by providing a road map illustrating how to address a regulatory change from a compliance perspective. Finally, we will review some basic considerations in resolving employee and hotline complaints. The theme throughout the presentation will be investing in compliance up front helps avoid or minimize what can turn out to be costly non-compliance down the road, saving the organization time, effort and money. Presenter: David E. Grogan, Associate Director of University Compliance, University of Illinois and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) for one credit. October SHRM IV9R 14, :15 10:30 a.m. Break and SPONSOR EXPO 10:30 11:30 a.m. (Session #6) 5 New Techniques to Attract and Engage Employees in Good Times And Not So Good Are you trying to recruit and retain talent? Or attract and engage? It might seem like semantics, but in this competitive landscape, it s the difference between success and suboptimal results. In this session we will explore the tools and techniques progressive institutions are using to attract and engage talent now. Session attendees will leave with 5 techniques they can put to use when they return to their campus to better attract and engage your institution s talent.
