10 Technical Meeting on User Identification with Multimodal Biometrics. Dr. Sitalakshmi Venkatraman, Research Degree Coordinator & Sr. Lecturer in Information Technology, School of Science, Information Technology and Engineering, University of Ballarat, Australia delivered a presentation on User Identification with Multimodal Biometrics in the Dec month technical meeting organized by the IEEE Madras Section along with the IEEE CS, IEEE TMC, CSI Chennai and IIT Madras Alumni Assn. Mr. HR Mohan, Chairman, IEEE CS, while welcoming the gathering, highlighted the importance of Biometrics in the context of growing e-commerce business, online banking and various e-governance initiatives including UID project. Mr. Rupchand, Chairman, IEEE TMC formally introduced the speaker, Dr. Sitalakshmi Venkatraman, an alumni of IIT 52 IEEE SB members of Sri Muthukumaran Institute of Technology made an Industrial Visit to the prestigious Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), SHAR ISRO, Sriharikota on 7th Dec 011. The participants after several security checks and administrative formalities at the SDSC, assembled at the Brahmaprakash Hall. A brief introductory talk was made by a coordinator at the centre which brought the framework of the visit in perspective under the eyes of the gathered members and an introductory video clip was also streamed. After the lunch, the tour around the space centre began. Launch Control Centre was the first complex where the students gathered. A video footage on controlling the path of spacecrafts, maintaining the trajectory, subsequent controlling commands upon deviation from its nominal path, the voice- Intercom facilities were introduced to the eager learners followed by a short talk where doubts Madras and NITIE Mumbai, having about 25 years of rich international work experience in developing turnkey projects for IT industry, and in teaching a variety of IT courses for tertiary institutions, in India, Singapore, New Zealand and now in Australia. In her, presentation Dr. Sita said that due to the increasing demand for secure electronic applications, biometrics systems are becoming very important for many real world applications. Over the years, biometric technologies based on face, fingerprint, DNA samples, speech, keystroke and other personal features have advanced to a great extent leading to sophisticated user identification systems. She reviewed the developments and the issues surrounding biometrics worldwide and in addition relate it to the recent Proof-of-Concept (PoC) study of biometric enrolment conducted by UIDAI in India. Considering case instances from various literatures, she concluded that multimodal biometrics is the way forward for a highly reliable adoption of biometric identification systems in various applications, such as banks, businesses, government and even home environments. She also illustrated a solution model for implementing multimodal biometrics based on industryoriented research projects being undertaken at the University of Ballarat, Australia. Towards the end, Dr. Sita shared the related research project opportunities and funding details for pursuing higher research degrees in Australia in general and in particular at the University of Ballarat. The presentation was quite interactive and the participants raised a no. of queries after the formal presentation. The participants, from the industry, who carrying out the microfinancing and banking projects shared their experiences. Mr. Mohan, Chairman, IEEE CS & Major. V.V Chnadrasekaran, Treasurer, IEEE Madras Section, presented mementoes to Dr. Sita. Dr. R.M. Suresh, Chairman, CSI Chennai, while proposing the vote of thanks, urged the students and academic community to make use of the offer of collaborative research with the Australian universities. About 85 participants representing, academia, industry and student community attended the presentation. Visit to Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), SHAR ISRO, Sriharikota by Sri Muthukumaran Institute of Technology IEEE SB were raised by the ever-probing minds. Then a visit was made to the Rocket Testing Centre where the efficiency of the motor is tested and other parameters such as temperature, Vibration levels, thrust, and pressure are examined. Students realized that separate testing centres are maintained for Stages 1 and 3 (Solid and Cryogenic Propellants) and for stages 2 and 4 (Liquid Propellants). Launch Pad 1 (Integrate on Pad-IOP) and Launch Pad 2 (Integrate Transfer Launch-ITL) were visited. Launching Mechanisms, Lift-Off Speeds, measures undertaken to withstand the exorbitant heat of exhaust gases were taught by the on-site Engineers. The last leg of the visit was to the Telemetry Ground Station where the controlling machineries and system were shown around. The overall experience was enthralling and inspiring. It helped us appreciate the complex working and tireless effort of the scientists who work to make each launch a success. The inspiration derived was well worth the time spent.
