7 BRADFORD COLLEGE FOR FURTHER DETAILS CALL UYI-OGHOSA ERNEST OKUNKPOLOR Uyi has lived in England for less than three years but has already made his mark at Bradford College with his tutors praising his exemplary performance both in and out of the classroom. He enrolled on a Level 3 Manufacturing Engineering course where he achieved three Distinction Stars (equivalent to a staggering 420 UCAS points) and was awarded a prestigious Bradford College Rising Star Award before progressing to a Higher National Diploma. His ambition is to achieve Distinctions in every one of the course s 16 Units - and he looks on track to do just that. He then hopes to progress his journey on a BEng Top-up in Mechanical Engineering followed by a Master s degree. Alongside his studies, Uyi works as a Student Ambassador representing the College at various events, he is an active member of the Students Union and he has served as the voice of his peers as a Course Representative. Even when I was a little boy, I was inspired by the way engineers solve problems and from then I have always wanted to be an Engineer. QUALITY COURSES The quality of our Higher Education courses was highlighted when, in its latest inspection of the College, the Quality Assurance Agency, the body responsible for academic quality and standards in UK Higher Education, awarded us the highest judgement possible. PASS RATES Our pass rates for Further Education courses are above the national average. For courses of more than 24 weeks duration, our pass rates are 93% compared to 91% nationally and for courses of less than 24 weeks duration, they are 96% compared to 92% nationally. OUTSTANDING STUDENT FACILITIES We provide a safe and secure campus that contains top-notch facilities including modern classrooms, workshops and lecture theatres; well-equipped learning resources; a gym, restaurant, hair and beauty salons and café bars. We work across all College sites and at all course levels. There are five Support Teams and extra specialists. We have a team of 100 staff in total. The Teams are: The Physical Disabilities, Medical Conditions and Learning Difficulties Team The Emotional and Behavioural Support Team The Specific Learning Difficulties Team The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Team The Blind and Sight Impaired Team There is also a Well-being Advisor for learners with mental health needs or Asperger s Syndrome. 13 BRADFORD COLLEGE FOR FURTHER DETAILS CALL BUILDING THE FUTURE OF BRADFORD COLLEGE Work on an iconic new 23,000m 2 building to replace the existing Westbrook, McMillan, Appleton and Old Buildings commenced in the summer of 2012 and is expected to be completed by September Students will benefit from the bringing together of facilities and curriculum into a single location, new styles of learning which will embrace cutting edge technologies, realistic work environments that will be open to the public and opportunities to showcase learning activity through open plan areas. The new building represents the second phase of the College s Accommodation Strategy. The first phase involved the development of the state-of-the-art Trinity Green campus which opened in 2008 and houses the curriculum areas of Engineering, Construction and Sport. 13

You can gain qualifications on a full or part-time basis over a period of one to six years. Some courses offer exemptions from parts of professional body examinations; others prepare you for direct entry to particular professions or careers. Entry qualifications vary between one course and another. The entry requirements listed in this pocket guide are typical offers. We accept a wide range of UK and international qualifications so please refer to our website for more detailed entry requirements. Please note, for some courses, additional qualifications, evidence of relevant work experience, a portfolio of evidence or DBS clearance may be required. 23

26 WE GO THE EXTRA MILE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR THOSE STUDYING FURTHER EDUCATION COURSES Depending on your age or situation, there may be some costs involved when you choose to come to College. TUITION FEES/EXAMINATION FEES If you are under 19, and are studying on a full or part-time Further Education course, you will not pay tuition or examination fees. If you are aged over 19, you will be responsible for the payment of course fees unless you qualify for fee remission, for which various criteria apply, or a 24+ loan. Full details on the costs of courses or the eligibility for help with the payment of fees, contact our FE Registry Helpline: LEARNER SUPPORT FUND The Learner Support Fund offers assistance towards the cost of travel, books, materials and childcare costs. To qualify, you will have to meet certain criteria. 27 BRADFORD COLLEGE FOR FURTHER DETAILS CALL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR THOSE STUDYING HIGHER EDUCATION COURSES Gaining a Higher Education qualification is one of the greatest contributions you can make to maximise your earnings. No home student is expected to pay the tuition fees for their first degree (or PGCE) before they study. Loans are available from Student Finance England to cover these costs. For full-time students, Student Finance England also offer a range of other loans and grants to support you whilst you study: This includes: Student Loan for living expenses (Maintenance Loan) Parents Learning Allowance non-repayable grant Higher Education Maintenance Grant or Special Support Grant Disabled Students Allowance Dependants Grant for adult dependants Childcare Grant Information about the part-time tuition fee loan or the full-time package, including how to apply, is available on the Student Finance England website: 27

You can choose more than one course and you will be given the opportunity to see staff from each of your choices. Once our Admissions Team receives your application form, we will arrange an interview for you. A date, time and location for your interview will be sent to you along with details of anything you need to bring with you. It is possible to arrange a session with a Careers Advisor who can offer guidance and information on courses. The industry is currently experiencing skills gaps and there is a wealth of opportunity available for men and women who gain skills in these areas. Careers in Engineering combine specialist and practical skills. Highly specialist positions regularly command high salaries and offer excellent career progression. Our Engineering courses are offered in modern workshops in our new eco-friendly Trinity Green campus using new equipment and the latest technology to enhance your learning. 33 BRADFORD COLLEGE FOR FURTHER DETAILS CALL Engineering LEVEL 2 FIRST DIPLOMA IN ENGINEERING Duration: One year full-time Overview The BTEC First Diploma in Engineering has been developed to provide education and training for engineering employees. It is a nationally-recognised Level 2 vocationally-specific qualification that will give you the opportunity to enter employment in the engineering sector or to progress to Level 3 vocational qualifications. You will develop a range of skills, techniques and attributes essential for successful performance in working life. Course Structure The Mandatory Units studied are: Health & Safety, Mathematics & Science, Interpreting and Using Engineering Information. The remaining Units are: CAD, Electronics, Fitting & Turning and Workskills. Attendance is two and a half days per week. Entry Requirements Four GCSEs at Grade A-D including Mathematics and Science. 33
34 WE GO THE EXTRA MILE Engineering - Electrical/Electronic LEVEL 3 EXTENDED DIPLOMA IN ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING Duration: Two years full-time Overview This is a nationally-approved programme equivalent to three A levels. If you are interested in working in the areas of Computer Applications, Micro-electronics, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation and Control Engineering, then this is the perfect course for you. Course Structure You will study a total of nine Units in each year. Units covered include: Electronics, Electrical Applications, PLCs (Programme Logic Controllers), Digital & Analogue Electronics and Microprocessors. Entry Requirements Four GCSEs at Grade A-C, including Mathematics and Science or a suitable BTEC First qualification or a GNVQ Intermediate in Engineering, or equivalent, or any similar level qualification. Credit may be given for substantial relevant experience. 34
35 BRADFORD COLLEGE FOR FURTHER DETAILS CALL Engineering - Manufacturing LEVEL 3 EXTENDED DIPLOMA IN MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING Duration: Two years full-time (available part-time) Overview This is a nationally-approved programme equivalent to three A levels. If you would like a career in any area of design and manufacturing from Automobile to Aeronautical Engineering, this is perfect for you. Completion of the course you could lead to employment in an area such as: Automotion and Robotics, Systems Design, Manufacturing Systems and Technology, Engineering Materials or Computer Aided Design and Manufacture. Course Structure The course is made up of nine Units per year. Subjects studied include: Computer Aided Drafting, Computer Aided Manufacturing, Fabrication and Welding, Primary Processes, Mathematics, Mechanical Principles, Electronics and Manufacturing Processes. Entry Requirements Four GCSEs at Grade A-C, including Mathematics and Science, or a suitable BTEC First Diploma. You will be invited for an interview (irrespective of your qualifications and experience) and you will be expected to complete a diagnostic assessment. Acceptance on the course is then subject to the approval of the Course Team. Credit may be given for substantial relevant experience. 35

37 BRADFORD COLLEGE FOR FURTHER DETAILS CALL Engineering - Motor Vehicles ENTRY LEVEL 3 AND LEVEL 1 MOTOR VEHICLE STUDIES - IMI Duration: One year full-time Overview These qualifications are based on the Qualification & Credit Framework (QCF). They include the vocational subjectbased learning component of Foundation Learning and are designed to engage and motivate anyone aged who is interested in the maintenance of motor vehicles and the various roles available in the retail motor industry. Course Structure This course comprises a combination of Mandatory and Optional Units which provide the flexibility of achieving and progressing in small manageable steps. The Personal and Social Skills Development (PSD) Units, separate to the qualifications, also meet the Foundation Learning programme s current requirement for credits of Personal and Social Development, which will support you in preparation for your working life. There is a practical approach to assessment and visual questioning techniques are included. Entry Requirements These qualifications are open to anyone aged 14 or over who is interested in gaining a nationally-recognised qualification. There are no specific entry requirements. 37
38 WE GO THE EXTRA MILE Engineering - Motor Vehicles LEVEL 1 ABC/IMI DIPLOMA IN MOTOR VEHICLE STUDIES Duration: One year full-time (available part-time) Overview This course is ideal for year olds in post-school education or training, particularly those with limited previous achievements, or for mature students seeking re-entry into employment with insufficient qualifications and/or experience to compete in the job market. There will be the option to join a female only group. Course Structure You will study one Mandatory Unit in Health & Safety plus other Units including: Engineering Equipment & Materials, Spark Ignition Power Units, Engine Liquid Cooling Systems & Engine Lubrication Systems, Battery & Lighting Systems, Steering & Suspension Systems and Vehicle Braking Systems. Most Units are practical with a small element of classroom work. You will also learn Functional Skills in Communication, Application of Number and Information Communication Technology. Entry Requirements You will need to have an interest in motor vehicles and be working at Level 1. You will be expected to undergo a brief interview and pass a short test in Literacy and Numeracy. Applications should be made as soon as possible before September of the year in which the course is due. 38
39 BRADFORD COLLEGE FOR FURTHER DETAILS CALL Engineering - Motor Vehicles LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE/DIPLOMA IN AUTOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR Duration: One year full-time (available part-time) Overview If you are thinking of joining the motor industry it is now more important than ever that you have the right qualifications - Progression Awards - which are based on industry s requirements. These Awards provide you with the knowledge and understanding for the City & Guilds and include VRQ in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Light Vehicles). Course Structure You gain the essential experience, knowledge, practical skills and technology in vehicle, mechanical and electrical systems. You will study: Automotive Vehicle Workshop, Environment Studies, Remove & Refit Components (Light Vehicle) and Fault Diagnosis (Light Vehicle). At the end of the year, you should be fully capable of working in the industry or going on to further training. The 4290 Progression Award (Level 3) is available on a full-time basis. Entry Requirements You should have successfully completed the ABC Level 1 Diploma in Motor Vehicle Studies (or equivalent) or have previous experience of work within the motor industry. You must be aged 16+. You should apply as soon as possible before September of the year in which the course starts. 39

41 BRADFORD COLLEGE FOR FURTHER DETAILS CALL Engineering - Motor Vehicles (Motorsports) LEVEL 2 IMI DIPLOMA IN VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY (MOTORSPORTS) Duration: Two years full-time Overview This course offers a comprehensive grounding in both the theoretical and practical aspects of motorsport vehicle repair. This includes aspects of the motorsport industries regulations and Health & Safety as well as the vocational aspects related to engines, electrical units, chassis units and transmission units. Course Structure You will gain experience, knowledge, practical skills and technology in motorsport vehicle, mechanical and electrical systems.
