1 MEDICAL ASSISTANT TECHNOLOGY Plan for Assessment of Student Academic Achievement From the Mission of Hocking College To prepare individuals for careers as technicians or technologists who will work with skilled craftsmen and professionals. Mission of Academic Affairs Unit To promote learning and learner success. Mission of Medical Assistant Technology To prepare individuals for entry-level careers in ambulatory health care settings such as medical offices and clinics and to provide students with a background sufficient for growth and advancement in the medical assisting profession. Central Objective Graduates of the Medical Assistant Technology will be well prepared for entry-level employment. IP0102MedicalAsst/1
2 Success Skills (Institutional Core Competencies) The following general outcomes are life and work skills cultivated in all students seeking the Associate Degree. 1. Communicates effectively. 2. Demonstrates math skills. 3. Demonstrates learning and critical thinking skills. 4. Maintains professional skills and attitudes. 5. Practices human relations skills. 6. Demonstrates knowledge of science and the environment. 7. Demonstrates community, cultural, and global awareness. 8. Maintains a code of ethics. Program Exit Competencies The following outcomes express additional, particular skills, behaviors, and attitudes cultivated in students seeking the Associate Degree in the Medical Assistant technology. 1. Communicates effectively. 2. Applies legal concepts to practice. 3. Provides patient education. 4. Manages medical records. 5. Schedules appointments. 6. Performs billing and bookkeeping procedures 7. Processes insurance claims. 8. Provides patient care. 9. Assists with procedures and treatments. 10. Collects and processes specimens. 11. Performs laboratory and diagnostic testing. 12. Utilizes computer software to maintain office systems. The Success Skills (Institutional Core Competencies) and Program Exit Competencies combine to form a single set of skills, behaviors, and attitudes determined desirable for entry-level practitioners in Medical Assisting, for graduates transferring to four-year institutions, and for educated citizens. 3 Criteria for Assessing Student Academic Achievement 1. The aggregate score for each Program Exit Competency evaluated by graduates of the Medical Assistant program on a survey will be 3.5 or higher (on a 5-point scale), indicating the graduates satisfaction with their Hocking College preparation for entry-level work. Data gathered for : * Number of graduate surveys: 5 Program Exit Competencies** Aggregate Respondents 1. Displays professionalism Communicates effectively Performs administrative duties Performs clinical duties Applies legal concepts to practice Manages the office Manages practice finances Overall 4.29 Note: The Program Exit Competencies as found on page 2 of this report were changed effective The overall aggregate of 4.29 exceeded the goal of 3.5 (on a 5-point scale). In addition, the aggregate for each Program Exit Competency also exceeded the goal. Does this analysis support conclusions drawn from other assessment data analyzed for ? Please elaborate. On the same survey, the graduates rated their overall satisfaction with their technology education at 4.60 (on a 5-point scale). The analysis also supports conclusions drawn from externship evaluations and anecdotal evidence. * Graduate and employer survey results for are reported with data for ; survey results are not available until 15 months following June graduation. The aggregate score for each Success Skill (Institutional Core Competency) evaluated by graduates of the Medical Assistant program on a survey will be 3.5 or higher (on a 5-point scale), indicating the graduates satisfaction with their Hocking College preparation in life/job skills. Data gathered for : * Number of graduate surveys: 5 Success Skills ** Aggregates Number of Respondents Overall 3.95 **Refer to page 2 of this report for a list of Success Skills (Institutional Core Competencies). The overall aggregate of 3.95 exceeded the goal of 3.5 (on a 5-point scale). In addition, the aggregate for each Success Skills also exceeded the goal. Does this analysis support conclusions drawn from other assessment data analyzed for ? Please elaborate. On the same survey, the graduates rated their overall satisfaction with their education at Hocking College at 4.20 (on a 5-point scale). The externship evaluations and anecdotal evidence also support this analysis. * Graduate and employer survey results for are reported with data for ; survey results are not available until 15 months following June graduation. The aggregate score for each Program Exit Competency evaluated by employers of Medical Assistant graduates on a survey will be 3.5 or higher (on a 5-point scale), indicating better-thansatisfactory to superior performance. However, Program Exit Competency #6 (Manages the office) was rated below goal by one responding employer. The other two employers did not rate it. Also, none of the responding employers rated Program Exit Competency #7 (Manages practice finances). Does this analysis support conclusions drawn from other assessment data analyzed for ? However, Success Skill #3 (Demonstrates learning & critical thinking skills) was rated below goal. Strengths of the Hocking Graduate were personality, willingness to learn and try again; strong knowledge base, and outstanding people skills. On the same survey, the responding employers rated their overall satisfaction level with the preparedness of the Hocking Graduate at 4.2 (on a 5-point scale). * Graduate and employer survey results for are reported with data for ; survey results are not available until 15 months following June graduation. 7 5. A survey will indicate that 80 percent of graduates desiring employment in the Medical Assisting profession will report employment in the field within one year of graduation. Data gathered for *: Total number of graduates: 12 Number of graduates available for employment: 11 Number of graduates employed related to technology: 9 Number of graduates furthering education: 0 Source of information: Hocking College Graduate Placement Report, (Completed by Career Services June, 2002). The goal was achieved since 81.8% of the graduates (9 out of 11) are employed related to the technology. Does this analysis support conclusions drawn from other assessment data analyzed for ? Only this criterion addresses employment data. * Graduate and employer survey results for are reported with data for ; survey results are not available until 15 months following June graduation. 8 6. One hundred percent of students who graduate from the Medical Assistant Program will have obtained scores of 95 percent or higher on practicum clinical and administrative objectives. Data gathered for : Number of students evaluated: The form* used to maintain an ongoing record of classroom and externship outcome assessment is very detailed and references more than 100 different skills. The instructor initials the form for the specific outcome when the student has performed the skill with competency in the classroom. The form is also initialed by the externship supervisor when the student has performed with competency at the externship facility. Students are placed at three different externship sites during the program. The number of documented skills is then converted to a percentage. Thus, this data collection is a continuous and on-going process. *The forms used to document that the outcomes have been achieved are available upon request. After reviewing all of the externship objectives from the graduating class of 2002, it was determined that one hundred percent of those students obtained 95 percent or higher clinical and administrative practicum objectives. Many of the students achieved 100 percent. Program change planned for as a result of this analysis: No changes are planned. The aggregate score for professionalism as evaluated by on-site practicum supervisors for students in the Medical Assistant technology will be 8.5 or higher (on a ten-point scale), indicating good to excellent performance. Data gathered for : The aggregate score for professionalism as evaluated by on-site practicum supervisors for students in the Medical Assistant Technology was 9.6 (on a 10 point scale). Note: The data collected for this criterion is used to counsel each student, especially if the individual student falls below the goal of 8.5 Program change planned for as a result of this analysis: No changes are planned. The program outcomes will be maintained as stated. This Criterion will be changed to read as follows in our Plan: This criterion will not be changed. IP0102MedicalAsst/9
10 8. The aggregate score for professionalism obtained from student in-class guided self-evaluations will be 90 percent or higher, indicating very good to excellent performance. Data gathered for : The aggregate score for professionalism obtained from in-class self-guided evaluation was 94 percent. Note: The data collection is a continuous and on-going process. A copy of the Class Progress Record form that is used for each student every quarter is available upon request. Program change planned for as a result of this analysis: No program changes are planned. The program outcome will be maintained as stated.
