(Analysis Level) Recognize and use safety and emergency practices in the clinical medical Students will accurately and correctly demonstrate the learning outcomes for this program at the following proficiency level. 1. Demonstrate effective and correct entry-level clinical procedures including: A. Obtain vital signs. B. Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture. C. Perform pulmonary function testing. D. Perform electrocardiography. E. Perform patient screening using established protocols. F. Administer oral and parenteral medications correctly. G. Assist physician with patient care. H. Perform quality control measures. I. Perform CLIA waived hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, immunology testing. J. Screen test results. 2. Apply correctly basic mathematics to medical procedures requiring calculations including: A. Prepare proper dosages of medication for administration. B. Maintain laboratory test results using flow sheets. C. Maintain growth charts.

Practice Standard Precautions and select appropriate barrier/personal protective equipment (PPE) for potentially infectious situations. B. Perform handwashing. C. Prepare items for autoclaving and perform sterilization D. Obtain specimens for microbiological testing. E. Perform CLIA waived microbiology testing. 4. Analyze and apply the concepts of effective professional communication as used in the medical setting including: A. Use reflective, restatement, and clarification techniques to obtain a patient history. B. Report relevant information to others succinctly and accurately using medical terminology correctly. C. Instruct patients according to their needs to promote health maintenance and disease prevention and to explain general office policies. D. Prepare a patient for procedures and/or treatments. E. Demonstrate telephone techniques. F. Document patient care and patient education. G. Respond effectively to verbal and nonverbal communications, and compose professional business letters. H. Develop and maintain a current list of community resources related to patients' healthcare needs. I. Advocate on behalf of patients. 5. Appraise current legal implications and ethical considerations appropriate to the clinical medical setting and respond professionally including: A. Respond to issues of confidentiality and apply HIPAA rules in regard to privacy/release of information. B. Perform with scope of practice and practice within the standard of care for a medical clinical assistant. C. Incorporate the Patient's Bill of Rights into personal practice and medical office policies and D. Complete an incident report. E. Document accurately in the patient record. F. Apply local, state, and federal health care legislation and regulations appropriate to the medical assisting practice

4 Page 4 of 5 G. Report illegal and/or unsafe activities and behaviors that affect health, safety, and welfare of others to proper authorities. H. Develop a plan for separation between personal and professional ethics. 6. Recognize and use correct safety and emergency practices in the clinical medical setting including: A. Comply with safety signs, symbols, and labels. B. Evaluate the work environment to identify safe vs. unsafe working conditions. C. Develop a personal (patient and employee) safety plan. D. Develop an environmental safety plan. E. Demonstrate proper use of the following equipment: eyewash, fire extinguishers, and Sharps disposal containers. F. Participate in a mock environmental exposure event with documentation of steps taken. G. Explain an evacuation plan for a physician's office. H. Demonstrate methods of fire prevention in the healthcare I. Maintain provider/professional level CPR certification. J. Perform first aid K. Use proper body mechanics. L. Maintain a current list of community resources for emergency preparedness. The Standards and Learning Outcomes are based on the clinical psychomotor domains of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERD) of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) Core Curriculum 2008 Plan for Medical Assistants. See attachment below for the MAERB Appendix B. This program is competency-based education that emphasizes skills and evaluates mastery of those skills according to the actual learner's performances. Each psychomotor competency listed in the attached document of MAERB Core Curriculum 2008 Plan for medical assistants must be completed with accuracy, according to the correct procedure, and within the time frame allowed. In the classroom, the students demonstrate these skills and their performance is evaluated by the instructors using procedure checklists for each of the competencies. In the clinical settings the students are evaluated by their clinical supervisors.
