1 HUMAN SERVICES AND CORRECTIONS TECHNOLOGY Plan for Assessment of Student Academic Achievement From the Mission of Hocking College Hocking College is an innovative, experience-based technical college that nurtures learning and learner success. Mission of Public Safety Services Department To foster, through technical education, cooperation among professionals in and outside the college environment by providing an academic and supportive environment for its learners, instilling in them the need for lifelong learning so they can have a positive impact on their community as professionals and citizens. Mission of Human Services and Corrections Technology To provide quality instruction for students in the areas of probation, parole, corrections, and human services, in both the adult and juvenile systems. The goal of this instruction is to provide the skills necessary for entry-level positions in these areas. 2 Success Skills The following general outcomes are life and work skills cultivated in all students seeking the Associate Degree. 1. Communicates effectively. 2. Demonstrates math skills. 3. Demonstrates learning and critical thinking skills. 4. Maintains professional skills and attitudes. 5. Practices human relations skills. 6. Demonstrates knowledge of science and the environment. 7. Demonstrates community, cultural, and global awareness. 8. Maintains a code of ethics. Program Outcomes The following outcomes express additional, particular skills, behaviors, and attitudes cultivated in students seeking the Associate Degree in Human Services and Corrections. 1. Systematically gathers and assesses information to determine an intervention for an agency client. 2. Advocates for the client in collaboration with other agencies. 3. Makes professional decisions based on legal and ethical parameters. 4. Prepares written documents that meet agency standards. 5. Keeps themselves and others safe in the context of the setting. 6. Uses appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication techniques as a leader and facilitator. 7. Develops and exhibits professional behavior that supports professional objectives. The Success Skills and Program Outcomes combine to form a single set of skills, behaviors, and attitudes determined desirable for entry-level practitioners in Human Services and Corrections, for graduates transferring to four-year institutions, and for educated citizens. The aggregate score for each Program Outcome evaluated by graduates of Human Services and Corrections program on a survey will be 3.5 or higher (on a 5-point scale), indicating the graduates satisfaction with their Hocking College preparation for entry-level work. Tolerant of mistakes of others Last year, the overall aggregate score for each professional behavior evaluated by on-site practicum supervisors was 1.82 (on a 2 point scale) exceeding the goal of All but one criterion (#5: Knowledge of agency services and client population) exceeded our goal of 1.6 or higher on a 2-point scale. The Human Services & Corrections faculty proposed the addition of a new course Services Programming that addresses specifically the services available in social services and correctional agencies as well as a more in-depth presentation of the types of clients that are served by these programs. In February 2008, this course was approved for addition to the curriculum as an elective course. The faculty members will encourage students to enroll for this elective course. Aggregate Number of Respondents Last year, the overall aggregate score for each Program Outcome evaluated by on-site practicum supervisors was 1.73 (on a 2 point scale) exceeding the goal of All but one criterion (#4: Prepares written documents that meet agency standards.) exceeded our goal of 1.6 or higher on a 2-point scale. We believe the score of 1.51 reflects the issue of students preparing documents which may be used for legal or funding purposes. Last year, the overall aggregate score for each Success Skill evaluated by on-site practicum supervisors was 1.84 (on a 2 point scale) exceeding the goal of 1.60.The Human Services & Correction faculty are pleased that all criterion exceed the goal of 1.6 or higher on a 2-point scale. We are, however, concerned at the low number of responses for Criterions 2 and 3. During our upcoming technology meetings, we will discuss the implementation of activities in which the site supervisor might be able to engage the student to better address these criterions..
