Plan ACADEMIC ASSESSMENT PLAN Department: Counseling,Development, and Higher Education-Counseling-MS Period: FY2004 Status: Plan Completed and Approved. Mission M.S. in Counseling The mission of the UNT Counseling Program is to prepare highly competent counseling professionals and counselor educators for dynamic leadership and service in a diverse and ever-changing world. Quality ethical teaching, scholarly inquiry, and professional service are the cornerstones of this mission. The student can: 1. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to fulfill the administrative responsibilities of counseling. 2. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to make appropriate use of supervision in counseling. 3. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to provide effective counseling services. 4. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to maintain professional relationships and pursue ongoing professional development. 5. Demonstrate indepth knowledge of research and/or technology as it relates to counseling. Outcome #: 1 : Internship Evaluation Form completed by internship site supervisor at end of capstone course COUN 5721 Internship in Counseling II. The Form specifically addresses the student s performance related to the four SLOs Administration, Supervision, Counseling, and Professional Relationships and Development using a 1-6 rating scale. : During the fall semester, the program coordinator compiles the results for students who completed 5721 during the previous year. If 95% of the students achieve an overall average of 4.0 or higher, the SLOs are considered to have been achieved. If that criterion is not met, the coordinator reports the results at the program faculty s annual program evaluation meeting in October or as soon thereafter as possible in the fall semester. The coordinator then charges the appropriate program committee with considering the matter and bringing a recommendation to the faculty at large. The committee s recommendation and rationale are disseminated to the faculty the week before, typically, the next program faculty meeting, and, typically, the faculty votes on the change at that meeting. The program coordinator sees to the implementation of any adopted change(s) either herself or by charging the task to the appropriate faculty or staff member. : In recent years, the data have met the criterion, so the faculty has not revised the program based on this. Beginning fall, 2004, results for the past year will be compiled and, whether meeting or Outcome #: 2 : Internship Site Supervisor s Evaluation of Program Form. Each semester, each site supervisor for COUN 5721 Internship in Counseling II submits this completed form along with the Internship Evaluation Form on all supervisees. The form includes 7 items for the supervisor to rate from 1 (very poor) to 5 (excellent) and asks the supervisor to compare UNT Page 1 of 5
counseling program student supervisees to student supervisees from counseling programs of other institutions. Item 1 addresses overall educational preparation (SLOs 1-4), items 2-5 address clinical knowledge and skills (SLO 3), item 6 addresses administrative knowledge and skills (SLO 1), and items 8 and 9 ask for suggestions for improvement and/or other suggestions. : During the fall semester each year, an internship faculty supervisor compiles the results of the Form. If the average rating on all objective items is 4.0 or higher, the SLOs are considered to have been achieved. If the criterion for achievement is not met, he supervisor reports these results and any site supervisors suggestions at the program faculty s annual program evaluation meeting in October or as soon thereafter as possible in the fall semester. If the results indicate the need for one or more possible revisions to the program, the coordinator then charges the appropriate program committee with considering the matter and bringing a recommendation to the faculty at large. : In recent years, the criterion has been achieved, so the faculty has not revised the program based on this. Beginning fall, 2004, results for the past year will be compiled and, whether meeting or Outcome #: 3 : Internship faculty supervisor s report to the faculty regarding students who are not progressing satisfactorily in Internship. The program coordinator solicits such reports at the last program faculty meeting of each semester, and internship faculty supervisors may call special meetings if needed to address urgent cases. : The frequency and nature of students unsatisfactory progress is examined for indications of inadequate program preparation. Where deficits are identified, the faculty identifies one or more areas for program remediation and implements appropriate program revisions. : Reports of students inadequate progress in Internship have been rare (for example, note no such report in Student Competency Concerns item in Meeting Minutes on 12/02/02, 05/05/03, 05/03/04). When such concerns have been identified (see Meeting Minutes for 04/05/04, item #3), the student s unsatisfactory progress has been judged not to reflect program deficits, so the faculty has not revised the program. Outcome #: 4 : Feedback from students at exit interviews just prior to graduation. The faculty internship supervisor conducts this interview with each student at the completion of COUN 5721 Internship in Counseling II. : Each semester, an internship supervisor compiles the results of the interviews and identifies patterns and trends. If the patterns and trends indicate the need for one or more possible revisions to the program, the supervisor so reports at a regularly scheduled program faculty meeting, and the coordinator then charges the appropriate program committee with considering the matter and bringing a recommendation to the faculty at large. Page 2 of 5
: In 2000, feedback from a few recent graduates, which coincided with feedback from the Advisory Council (see below) indicated that course content that addressed psychopathology and DSM-IV diagnosis and treatment planning, and that included attention to drugs and addiction, had become more important to counselors knowledge base across all counseling tracks than was an entire required course that addressed drugs and addiction only. Thus, the faculty voted to remove COUN 5610 Drug and Addiction Education for Counselors from the list of required courses for all master s students, and developed and added COUN 5480 Biopsychosocial Assessment and Wellness as a required course for all master s students. COUN 5610 remained on the course listings as an elective for students who wanted a more in-depth knowledge of these topics (see Meeting Minutes for 05/07/01, item #6). Also see Meeting Minutes 04/01/02 item #4. Beginning fall, 2004, results for the past year will be compiled and reported to the faculty at the annual program evaluation meeting held at the regularly scheduled Outcome #: 5 : Feedback from the annual meeting of the counseling program faculty with the Advisory Council consisting of 12 graduates of the UNT counseling program who represent the scope of counseling setting for which students are prepared to function as counseling professionals. : If the feedback indicates the need for one or more possible revisions to the program, the coordinator then charges the appropriate program committee with considering the matter and bringing a recommendation to the faculty at large. : 1. In 2000, Advisory Council feedback, which coincided with feedback from a few recent graduates, indicated that course content that addressed psychopathology and DSM-IV diagnosis and treatment planning, and that included attention to drugs and addiction, had become more important to counselors knowledge base across all counseling tracks than was an entire required course that addressed drugs and addiction only. 2. In 2002, Advisory Council feedback indicated a need for master s students to have more experience in career counseling. The faculty implemented plans to add a Career Counseling Resource Room to the program s Counseling and Human Development Center where all Denton campus master s students complete COUN 5690 Practicum in Counseling. The Room opened in 2003 (see Meeting Minutes for 04/14/03, item #7), and refinement of its use in the master s program is ongoing. Outcome #: 6 : Results of standardized tests that address SLO 3. These are: for graduates of the school counseling tracks, the TExES-Counselor; and for graduates of the community and college/university counseling tracks, the National Certified Counselor Exam and the Texas Licensed Professional Counselor Exam. : As data become available, the chairs of the School Counseling Master s Advisement Area Committee, the NCC Exam Committee, and the Community Counseling Master s Advisement Area Committee report test results at a regularly scheduled counseling program faculty meeting. If 90% of UNT counseling program graduates score at or above relevant (state and/or national) norms, SLO 3 is considered to have been achieved. If that criterion is not met, the committee chair analyzes the possible cause(s). If the possible causes indicate the need for one or more possible revisions to the program, the coordinator then charges the appropriate program committee with considering the matter and bringing a recommendation to Page 3 of 5
the faculty at large. : With few exceptions in recent years, the data have met the criterion. In cases in which the criterion was not met, instructors of the relevant courses were provided the information needed to revise course content as needed. See Meeting Minutes regarding the TExES exam (formerly ExCET) 9/17/01 item #12; the NCC exam 9/17/01 item #11, 10./15/01 item #11, 02/10/03 item #15; and the LPC exam 02/04/02 item #3. Beginning fall, 2004, results for the past year will be compiled and, whether meeting or not meeting criterion, will be reported to the faculty at the annual program evaluation meeting held at the regularly scheduled program faculty meeting in October or as soon thereafter as possible within the fall semester. Outcome #: 7 : Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) reaccreditation self-studies and site visits. : At counseling program faculty meetings subsequent to feedback from CACREP, the faculty takes steps to implement recommended program revisions. Specifically, the coordinator charges the appropriate program committee with considering the matter and bringing a recommendation to the faculty at large. : See Meeting Minutes 8/23/02 item #1 items a-f. Outcome #: 8 : College of Education Follow-Up Survey results. The College administers this Survey and breaks out results by program. : On an annual basis, the chair of the counseling program s Research, Development, and Follow-up Committee compiles the COE s most recent Survey administration results for the counseling program and reports them to the faculty at a regularly scheduled meeting. If 90% of respondents indicate very good or excellent for specific items and overall, SLOs 1-5 are considered to have been met. If the results fall below 90%, the coordinator then charges the appropriate program committee with considering the matter and bringing a recommendation to the faculty at large. : Because the achievement criterion has been met, the faculty has not make program revisions based on this. See Meeting Minutes 9/17/01 item #10. Beginning fall, 2004, results for the past year will be compiled and, whether meeting or not meeting criterion, will be reported to the faculty at the annual program evaluation meeting held at the regularly scheduled program faculty meeting in October or as soon thereafter as possible within the fall semester. Page 4 of 5
Outcome #: 9 : Counseling Program Monthly Meetings and Faculty Retreat. The faculty meets every month during the regular school year. In addition, every year or two, the counseling program faculty sets aside one retreat day. The purpose of both types of meeting is for faculty members to address ideas for program revisions and for evaluation of the adequacy of current s to identify program revision needs relative to SLOs #1-4. : When possible need for revisions of program or s is identified, the coordinator charges the appropriate program committee with considering the matter and bringing a recommendation to the faculty at large. : Examples include: - Revision of MS degree designation policy (Meeting Minutes 04/09/01 item #9) - Revise Follow-Up Survey (Meeting Minutes 10/14/02 item #5) - Revise elective courses for the College/University track (SLO #3, Meeting Minutes 12/02/02 item #14) - Revise course content for COUN 5769 Appraisal in Child and Adolescent Counseling (SLO #3, Meeting Minutes 03/10/03 item #12 and 04/14/03 items #10a. & b.) - Limit school counseling track internship sites to those that allow taping of counseling sessions (to improve quality of counselor supervision) (SLO #1-4, Meeting Minutes 10/13/03 items 6b. &c.) - Several Clinical Experiences Committee revisions (SLO #3, Meeting 11/08/04 item #9) - Revision of Competency Concerns procedure (in process: Meeting Minutes 09/07/04 item #2; 11/08/04 item #10) Outcome #: 10 : Master s Comprehensive Examination. This examination includes test items that address SLOs 1-5. It is administered each semester to M.S. students who are in their last semester of coursework. : Each semester, the chair of the MS Degree Comprehensive Examination Committee compiles the pass rate results. If the pass rate is 80% or higher, the SLOs are considered to have been achieved. If the data do not meet that criterion, the committee chair analyzes the possible cause(s). If the possible causes indicate the need for one or more possible revisions to the program, the chair reports the results and possible causes at a regularly scheduled program faculty meeting, and the coordinator then charges the appropriate program committee with considering the matter and bringing a recommendation to the faculty at large. Beginning fall, 2004, results for the past year will be compiled and, whether meeting or Page 5 of 5
