1 Guide To: Connecting to eduroam via Microsoft Windows 7 Eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. Eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop. IADT is one of these participating Institutions. A full list of the eduroam sites is available from The following instructions apply to using the eduroam wireless service on an Microsoft Windows 7 based computer. Please note that all activities on IADT s Wirless Networks is subject to IADT s ICT A/AUP. Requirements to use this service are: Have an Microsoft Windows 7 based computer. The two Institute digital certificates must be installed on your computer first. Please read Installing certs for eduroam. Have all Windows critical updates installed on your computer Have an up to date version of virus protection installed on your computer Have WiFi network card installed on your computer Access to the internet Web Browser Be a member of IADT s Student or Staff cohort
2 Connecting to eduroam via Microsoft Windows 7 The following instructions apply to using the eduroam wireless service on via Microsoft Windows 7 based computer. 1. Select [Start] and then [Control Panel]. In the Control Panel, select [Network and internet] 2. In the "Network and Internet" panel, click on [Network and Sharing Centre]
3 3. In the Network and Sharing center, select [Setup a New Connection or Network] 4. Select [Manually connect to a wireless network]
4 5. On the manual configuration screen, Network Name is eduroam (all lowercase), Security Type is WPA2 Enterprise, Encryption Type is AES. After typing these in, click Next 6. The next screen will say that the network has been configured. There are still more settings however, so select [Change Connection Settings]
5 7. The initial screen should have the details filled in already. 8. Select the [Security] tab and then next to the [Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)] option, click on the Settings button.
6 9. Protected EAP (PEAP) Properties window In the PEAP Properties window check the box that says Validate Server Certificate. Enter EDUROAMSRV.institute.local in the Connect to these servers section. In Trusted Root Certification Authorities Select GTE CyberTrust Global Root and licencesvr1. Uncheck the box that says Do not prompt user... Check Enable Fast Reconnect On the EAP MSCHAP secured password option, click on the Configure button. 10. Uncheck the box to use your windows credentials, then click OK.
7 11. Once near an eduroam access point, select the access point from the possible connections. You should get an automatic information box which will give a login prompt when selected. 12. Enter your username followed (for example N000000@iadt.ie (student) bloggsj@iadt.ie (staff) ) and your standard IADT network password. Please note this is not the same as your address, this log in is just for the eduroam service. 13. Your computer will now authenticate with the network and then you should be able to access the internet. If you get an error saying that authentication has failed, double check the above steps. If you are still unable to connect, then contact support@iadt.ie for assistance. Please note that all activities on IADT s Wirless Networks is subject to IADT s ICT A/AUP
