Thermal comfort, hot water, and appliances should be the primary areas of focus for the greatest operational efficiencies. 3 Opportunities for Commercial Offices Tenant demand is an important factor for commercial office space. A well- designed office building can reduce energy and operational costs significantly. Occupant needs and reputation are also important factors as is future proofing against obsolescence. 4 Opportunities for Healthcare Buildings Healthcare buildings in particular require a large degree of control due to the importance of comfort and hygiene for patients. Building systems therefore become the main focus. The challenge is to reduce energy and water use in these facilities while ensuring that patient outcomes are enhanced. 5 Opportunities for Education Buildings Educational buildings are all about the occupants and their use of the building. Ventilation, views, indoor environmental quality and acoustics are all important issues. University buildings are often ambitious in terms of sustainability for reputational reasons. 6 Opportunities for Retail Spaces Within stores, the retail sector will not compromise on lighting and product placement. Malls are huge spaces to heat and cool, require full lighting in the daytime, and attract lots of private vehicle trips. Much can be accomplished with control systems and technology but as with all building types, passive architectural design and daylighting can significantly improve the retail experience. However they do offer substantial opportunities through the size and layout of sites to incorporate green measures. Their locations are highly determinant of the solutions deployed. 8 Opportunities for Hotels Hotels present substantial challenges and opportunities for sustainability. Since the guest experience cannot be compromised, water, energy, and resource use are all high. Ecotourism is attracting a more discerning customer in some regions and the use of local and natural resources is often attractive as well as sustainable.
