1 Monday - Pronouns Definition: Words that take the place of nouns. There are several types. They are: Personal, Possessive, Demonstrative, Reflexive, Interrogative, Relative, Indefinite and Reciprocal. Definition 2: Personal pronouns refer back to specific persons or things, in other words, (IOW) their noun antecedent. Example: When my friends got the news, they called me. 2 Tuesday Personal Pronouns 2 Definition: Personal Pronouns can function as either SUBJECT pronouns, or OBJECT pronouns. Definition 2: SUBJECT pronouns function as the subjects of a verb, or who is performing an action. OBJECT pronouns function as the objects of verbs/preps./infinitive phrases. 3 Wednesday Possessive Pronouns/Adjectives Definition: Possessive Pronouns are used to indicate ownership. They can also be used as ADJECTIVES, which show ownership by modifying nouns or noun phrases. The pronouns must agree with the owner in both gender and number. POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES Singular Plural Singular Plural 1 st Person Mine Ours My Our 2 nd Person Yours Your Example: 3 rd Person His/Hers/Its Theirs His/Her/Its Their You know the twins? That house is theirs. (Theirs is referring back to twins, as the people owning the house) Each student must turn in her report by Monday. Is it ok if I come over to house tomorrow? Definition 2: POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS come after an owned noun. POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES come before the owned noun.

4 Thursday Demonstrative Pronouns Definition: Demonstrative Pronouns point to, or identify specific nouns. They can function as pronouns (replacing a noun, but potentially unclear), or as ADJECTIVES, meaning they modify (and are attached to) a noun, which is clearer in writing. DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS Singular Plural Near by, or close in time This These Further away, or distant in time That Those Example: That hat is exquisite! (That is modifying hat, point to one further away, adjective usage) These are my all time favorites. (These is referring to something, pronoun usage, but missing context.) 5 Thursday Demonstrative Pronouns Part 2: (You only have to copy the red underlined stuff) Demonstrative Pronouns require context, and usually function better as adjectives. Let s look at a couple more You Try s Fill in the blank with the proper pronoun: #1: John was walking with Mike and saw Billy coming down the street, wheeling a bike along with him. John turned to Mike and asked, Hey, isn t mine? #2: When Mark got home he had to walk the dog, do the dishes, and get dinner ready. made him very tired that night. Now, I want you to look at the second sentences in each. What is the pronoun referring to? The danger with using Demonstratives as pronouns is they can be unclear. Better to use them as adjectives, which means they should be attached to nouns. How might we rewrite the second sentence in each example in order to make it perfectly clear to our readers what we are talking about?

6 Friday Reflexive Pronouns Definition: Pronouns that refer back to the subject of the sentence or clause. Used in one of 3 cases: 1) the subject and D.O. are the same; 2) the subject and the object of a prep. are the same; 3) to emphasize the subject.
