It is located on the second floor inside the Medford Library. You may access free tutoring, the homework website, ilrn and use CD-ROMs for extra practice at this center. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Elementary Italian. (4 credit hours) ITAL 121 is an introductory course which assumes no prior experience in Italian. Grammar and vocabulary necessary for fundamental communication skills will be covered. REQUIRED MATERIALS: 1. Percorsi. 3 rd ed., National Bundle with Student Activities Manual and mylab Access Card. Italiano / Marchegiani, Prentice Hall, English Grammar for Students of Italian. 3 rd ed. Olivia & Hill, RECOMMENDED MATERIALS: Collins Italian Concise Dictionary, 5e.Harper Collins Publishers, Harper Collins, (Or another good quality Italian-English dictionary. DAILY ASSIGNMENTS: If you miss class, contact a classmate about any changes announced in class. If your professor is absent from class and a substitute cannot be found, look for an with instructions on assignments and quizzes. Your professor may occasionally modify the assignments in this syllabus or change the syllabus for the good of all the students or to correct typographical errors. Changes will be announced via the University system and/or Blackboard ( LEARNING OUTCOMES: Through this course you will work towards two objectives, which reinforce each other: to communicate in Italian on a fundamental level with others and to investigate the many facets of Italian culture through cultural readings, videos, music, art, and culinary presentations. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to do the following: 1. Communication demonstrate understanding of and interpret the main ideas and some supporting details of written and spoken communication in the present and past tenses on topics of personal interest such as one s immediate environment, background, friends, family, pets, hobbies, sports, travel, home and university life, shopping, and food. 1

2 engage in oral and written exchanges with the ability to initiate and sustain simple interchanges including providing and obtaining information, expressing feelings and preferences, and exchanging ideas and opinions on topics of personal interest such those mentioned above. 2. Cultures demonstrate understanding of cultural information on Italy and Italians throughout the global community. use appropriate cultural behavior in common social and travel situations. 3. Connections use the Italian language to reinforce subject matter and to learn new information in academic areas such as history, geography, art, anthropology, music, and literature. 4. Comparisons explain insights into their own language and culture, as developed through readings and supplementary myitalian lab and Internet listening activities, which feature Italian speakers in the students community and abroad. interpret cultural lessons in a global sense in order to enhance multicultural awareness. 5. Communities identify opportunities to practice and hear the Italian language outside of the classroom in activities such as concerts, movies, lectures, exhibits, festivals, and conversational exchanges with Italian speakers in the community. FINAL GRADE: Your final grade will be calculated in accordance with the following criteria: TESTS (Best 4/5) 40% ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION 15% ORAL PRESENTATIONS; HOMEWORK; LABS 20 % FINAL EXAM 25% GRADING SCALE: A C B D B D C+ BELOW 60 F CLASS POLICIES. PARTICIPATION: Class participation is mandatory. This is your best opportunity to practice in the target language and your success involves a commitment to regularly attending all four weekly classes and carefully completing the homework. Please make an in-class /phone contact early for missed assignments/material. You are responsible for all homework assignments. You are expected to come to class prepared and to participate actively. This participation includes paying attention in a respectful manner: no cell phone, computer use, reading the newspaper, doing other homework assignments, etc. 2

3 Repeated infractions of this manner will adversely impact your participation grade with a 3 point reduction incurred per infraction. Please don t hesitate to visit my office during office hours or by appointment, with any questions you might have about grammar, homework, etc. I am always available for extra help and enjoy talking to my students about their interests, concerns and questions. Since language learning is cumulative and builds on concepts learned previously, it is advisable to solve problems or deal with difficulties early in the semester. ATTENDANCE: Regular class attendance is essential for successful completion of the course, since we will work actively in class on increasing your skills in Italian. Please note the following definitions and policies. Definitions: Excused absences. Excused absences are those documented absences due to illness, attendance at family weddings or funerals, or official representation of the university. In exceptional cases, absences due to other similar serious circumstances may be excused, at the discretion of your professor and the program director. The student must provide the requested documentation within one week of returning from the absence: doctor s note, funeral program, coach s letter or similar official documents, as directed by the professor and course coordinator. Unexcused absences. Absences due to reasons other than those listed above and/or absences for which the student does not provide official documentation are considered unexcused. Examples: If you have a minor illness and miss class, but do not seek medical expertise and therefore cannot provide a medical note, the absence is considered unexcused. Vacation travel is an unexcused absence. Similarly, absences due to routine responsibilities of student organizations, jobs, house/vehicle maintenance are not excused. Policies for attendance: A. Penalties are given for excessive unexcused absences: Up to 5 unexcused absences = No effect on final grade. 6 unexcused absences = Final course grade is reduced by one step. (A to B+, B+ to B, B to C+, C+ to C, D+ to D, and D to F) 8 unexcused absences = Final course grade is reduced by a whole letter. (A to B, B+ to C+, B to C, C+ to D+, C to D, D+ to F, and D to F) 10 (or more) unexcused absences = Final course grade is reduced by two whole letters (A to C; B+ to D+; B to D; C+ to F; C to F; D+ to F; D to F.) B. Regular attendance is necessary for success in ITAL 121 and as preparation for ITAL 122. Students who have 6 or more absences are urged to consult with the Dean s office, since students with ongoing health problems or other serious circumstances may be eligible to withdraw from all courses without penalties on their academic record. 3

4 TESTS: There will be a total of 5 tests in addition to the Final Exam. To prepare for these tests you should study your class notes, the relevant textbook pages for grammar topics as well as cultural readings, and the Study Guide that I will post on Blackboard at least one class day before each test. The best 4 test grades out of 5 will be counted towards your grade; one test will be dropped. For this reason, make up tests will not be granted except in cases of documented medical or similar emergencies. You must provide me with timely documentation and all criteria will be evaluated before a make up is granted. Otherwise, if you miss a test, that will be the one test grade that will be automatically dropped. Please come to class on-time on test days as you will not be allowed extra time after class to complete your exam. A study guide and answer key (to the study guide) for each test and the Final Exam will be posted on Blackboard. Typically they will be posted two days before the Test. HOMEWORK & LAB ASSIGNMENTS For more information on LAB assignments, see section directly below. Please note: you will have two separate sets of homework assignments: 1) Homework from the Percorsi textbook is listed on the syllabus. Page numbers are not listed, nor is the preceding material that you will have to read to complete the assignment. Please look at all of the pages leading up to each exercise and read all material carefully. See me if you need further clarification. 2) The myitalianlab assignments listed on a calendar that you will access online through the Pearson site, LABS: 1. There will be regular, weekly Lab assignments that will be due according to the online calendar on the myitalianlab site. 2. You should be able to access this site from any computer with internet access and a compatible browser. 3. The lab assignments will all be posted online on the myitalianlab calendar on the accompanying Percorsi myitalianlab website, where you will also find everything you need to complete the lab assignment: 4 To help familiarize you with the myitalianlab technology, we will have an in-class myitalianlab demonstration and workshop. 5 USE OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN CLASS & CLASSROOM PROTOCOL: 1. Please turn off all cellphones, electronic tablets, computers, and other similar electronic devices in class. 2. Laptops and electronic tablets are only permitted for select circumstances on a discretionary basis, when a student has a demonstrated need. If you feel that you fall under this category, you MUST me within the first week of class and wait for my approval before using your laptop or tablet in class. 3. Misuse of this privilege, or use of cell phones during class will negatively impact your class participation grade. CONTACT & BLACKBOARD I will post REMINDERS or UPDATES about LAB WORK and HOMEWORK, as well as occasional review exercises, supplementary readings, and other pertinent information on Blackboard. There will also be an optional Study Guide posted on Blackboard at least one class day before each test. These are extremely helpful in helping you prepare for your test. An answer key to this guide will also be provided. HONOR CODE: You are expected to practice the highest possible standards of academic integrity. Any deviation from this expectation will result in a minimum academic penalty of failing the assignment/evaluation, and will result in additional disciplinary measures. Violations of the honor code include using another student s work; having another person complete ilrn activities for you; using translation tools other than simple dictionaries (paper or online); obtaining help from friends, family or tutors on graded assignments; using notes or handling phones during quizzes and tests; improper citation of sources; and any other form of academic misrepresentation. Please refer to your Student Handbook for information regarding the USC code of ethics and also see the web site of the Office of Academic Integrity. FINAL EXAM: Final exam schedules are available on VIP and on the Registrar s website. The dates posted for the final exams must be observed and cannot be changed. Classes meeting 4 days a week will meet on the schedule for MWF classes. Your professor will remind you of the Final Exam date in the first week of classes.
