ISBN-10: ISBN-13: UMB Blackboard course site COURSE BACKGROUND MBAACM 682 helps students improve their oral communication skills. Its purpose is to improve (1) students organizational effectiveness as managers, and (2) students personal effectiveness as speakers and listeners. Course topics include the form of communication (organization and delivery), communication styles, small group communication, and active listening. LEARNING OBJECTIVES MBAACM 682 has three primary pedagogical foci: oral communication in organizations, critical and analytical thinking, and presentational speaking. A structured set of experiences will give students a chance to practice and improve their skills in these areas. The knowledge and skills students acquire in this course will help students succeed in the challenges they will face in professional and personal communication contexts. Students will demonstrate: 1. The ability to speak and listen effectively in the following modes: interpersonal communication, small group communication, and public presentations. 2. The ability to use speaking and listening as a means of learning. 3. Increased confidence with their speaking and listening abilities.

2 COURSE REQUIREMENTS Participation/Attendance: MBAACM 682 is an interactive classroom. Please come to class prepared to engage in discussion of relevant materials and participate in group work. Professionalism: Please approach the classroom like you would a professional business setting and treat others with respect and courtesy. Please turn off your cell phones and all electronic devices during class time. All communication concerning this course must use standard professional English both oral and written. When ing me, use professional language and tone. Please proofread everything to make sure your s are coherent. Unprofessional communication (oral or written) will count against your final grade. Academic Integrity: Education should be an interactive, affirming, challenging experience. Students are expected to treat each other and the instructor with respect to create and maintain a collaborative learning environment. This includes a commitment to not engage in dishonest acts, such as copying another student s work, plagiarizing, fabricating data, etc. Students caught cheating or plagiarizing will receive an F and will have a description of the incident attached to his or her academic records. Students may also face further disciplinary actions as a result of such plagiarized acts. For more on documentation of written work, and plagiarism or cheating, please refer to the information sheet on writing guidelines and citation guidelines as well as the College of Management Handbook and the CM website. To pass the course the following is required: Delivery of three individual presentations, two group presentations, and two written papers. All assignments are mandatory and only in extreme cases will due dates be altered. Failure to speak with me before the due date of an assignment will result in a zero for that assignment. Late papers will be dropped a grade for each day they are late. Any paper late for more than a week will receive a failing grade.

3 Regular attendance and in-class contribution. Class participation and effort are core parts of your grade. Lateness and absences will negatively impact your grade and, if excessive, may result in failure of the course, even where you have a valid reason for missing class. NOTE: No more than 2 excused absences are allowed. Grading/Evaluation Standards: Specific criteria for each assignment will be provided as we go, however, the following criteria for evaluating your work will be reflected in your grade for all assignments: (1) content, (2) clarity of expression, (3) effort, (4) enthusiasm (5) preparation, and (6) professtional appearance.
