All learners have access to free resources and e-learning during a qualification through ILM s six-month Trial membership package. The QCF The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) is the government framework for all regulated vocational qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Implemented in 2008, the QCF is the workplace alternative to academic qualifications. All ILM qualifications sit on the QCF (and the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework SCQF), ensuring that they are nationally recognised. As an awarding body, we are externally audited by a range of regulatory bodies to guarantee the high standards of our qualifications. Progression ILM s QCF portfolio provides flexible routes to gaining full qualifications and enables progression to be achieved in small steps through the accumulation of credit. It also provides a clear structure of Levels to guide you in identifying progression pathways. Typically, vocational qualifications at Levels 2 and 3 are most suited to new managers. Levels 4 and 5 focus on supporting experienced managers, while Level 6 and 7 qualifications develop senior leaders. Funded qualifications Many of ILM s qualifications are eligible for public funding, showing on the Learning Aim Reference Application (LARA) database. Currently the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) distributes the majority of public funding though Adult Apprenticeship programmes, which is the dominant adult education funding mechanism for much of the UK. 8 Coaching Coaching is a powerful development tool that uses one-to-one conversations and guided questioning to unlock inner potential. Done correctly, coaching is one of the most powerful and cost effective ways of developing individual and organisational performance. Coaching for business Coaching requires a developed set of skills, high levels of emotional intelligence and significant hands-on experience. It helps employees deal effectively with change and find solutions to problems. Because of this, it is fast becoming one of the most popular tools in the manager s tool box. Successful organisations create a workplace culture where individuals can show initiative, take responsiblity and feel empowered to take measured risks. 10 Good leadership and management We know that organisations struggle to define what good leadership and management looks like and how this can be translated into practical use. As the UK s largest specialist awarding body for leadership and management, we have developed the Knowing-Doing-Being framework that defines good leadership and how it works in practice. We changed from our previous provider because ILM offered us quality, flexibility and the ability to use qualifications in a work-based setting. The ILM Knowing-Doing-Being framework The ILM Knowing-Doing-Being framework provides a unique way of understanding what makes people effective as leaders and managers at all levels in an organisation from the very first levels of managment through to strategic leadership. This includes not only technical management and leadership skills but also the behavioural and attitudinal capabilities required. It is key that all leaders and managers understand the core principles and practices that create a high performing workplace the Knowing which comes with qualifications and workplace experience. Equally, it is key that today s leaders and managers develop high levels of self- awareness around their own values, motivations and behaviours the Being aspect to the ILM framework. This enables individuals to be more effective in their own work and in their interactions with others. Truly effective managers and leaders also need to perform well the Doing. This is the ability of individuals to apply in practice what they know. Through the combination of Knowing, Doing and Being leaders and managers can start to perform at the highest standards. The best leadership and management programmes combine the development of insight into a person s qualities, along with formal structured learning about leadership and management. By utilising what has been learned about both themselves and leadership, managers can significantly improve their peformance at work.
