1 MEDIA CONTACT: Miriam Taylor Media Contact, Ogden Museum of Southern Art 925 Camp Street New Orleans, LA ***MEDIA ADVISORY*** Ogden Museum of Southern Art Announces Events for October The Ogden Museum of Southern Art will host several events in October to celebrate current and upcoming exhibitions including artist workshops, artist demonstrations, and an opening reception during Art for Art's Sake. Below are details of all October Events at the Ogden, if you need photographs to accompany listings of the events on your organization's website please contact Miriam Taylor at WHAT: Art for Art Sake exhibition openings: Simon Gunning and the Southern Louisiana Landscape and Maude Schuyler Clay: Mississippi History Art for Art s Sake is an annual arts walk event in the downtown arts district. Admission is free, and includes cash bars and entertainment by DJ Ed Maxmillion. Australian-born Simon Gunning moved to New Orleans in 1981 and began painting its neighborhood streets and later, the natural scenery of South Louisiana. DATE/TIME: October 1 st, 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. WHAT: Artist Workshop-Hand Papermaking Learn about the history and construction of handmade paper as we make paper by hand using cotton fiber. Participants will pull their own sheets of paper using a temporary paper mill set up at the Ogden. DATE/TIME: October 2 nd, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. WHAT: Day of the Dead Altar install (honoring Allen Toussaint) Each year, the Ogden Museum celebrates Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), presenting an authentic altar, workshops, and a community celebration during Ogden After Hours. This year artist Cynthia Ramirez will build the altar in dedication to Allen Toussaint.

2 DATE: October 5 th to November 8th WHAT: New Docent Training An Ogden Docent is a volunteer who leads tours helping visitors see the South through the visual arts and in the context of literature, music, food, and more. Prospective docents should have an interest in art and Southern culture and a desire to interact with adults and children. DATE/TIME: October 5 th October 19 th October 26 th 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. WHAT: Dia de los Muertos Teacher Workshop (presented in collaboration with Tulane s Stone Center for Latin American Studies) During this workshop, teachers will receive information on how to incorporate the tradition into their classroom, including a history of the celebration, lesson plans and art projects. Artist Cynthia Ramirez, will also speak about the traditional elements of altar building. For more information or to register, visit stonecenter.tulane.edu. DATE/TIME: October 5 th, 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. WHAT: Ogden After Hours: Colin Lake DATE/TIME: October 6 th, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. WHAT: Education Gallery Exhibitions Artists and Sense of Place Residency Show featuring artwork created by students from Airline Park Academy for Advanced Studies in collaboration with artist Shawn Hall DATE: October 6 th November 27 th WHAT: All Ages Workshop: Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Altar- Making Explore the history and cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos through hands-on art activities, including creating papel picado (cut paper), calaveras (sugar skulls), and family ofrendas (altars). Participants may bring family photos or objects to

3 incorporate into the altars in keeping with the Día de los Muertos tradition of honoring those who have passed away. Pre-registration required. Adults: $20 member; $25 non-member Child: $10 member; $15 non-member Advanced registration required. Visit ogdenmuseum.org/education DATE/TIME: October 8 th, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. WHAT: Ogden After Hours: The Happy Talk Band DATE/TIME: October 13 th, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. WHAT: O What a Night! Gala The O What a Night! Gala is the Ogden Museum s annual fundraiser. The Gala begins with a large silent auction in the Patrick F. Taylor Library, where guests arrive, mingle and bid while partaking in cocktails and appetizers by Chef Devillier. Moving from the Taylor library into the Gala tent, guests will enjoy musical and artistic surprises before being seated for a dinner by Mitch Arens, Executive Chef of Calcasieu. DATE/TIME: October 15 th, 6:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. WHAT: Ogden After Hours: Artist TBA DATE/TIME: October 20 th, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. WHAT: Guest Artist Kids Activity at Ogden After Hours Sculpt with Saplings. All ages are welcome to drop in to create their own sapling sculptures from bendable branches, guided and inspired by The Myth Makers: Donna Dodson and Andy Moerlein (whose work is featured on the Poydras Art Corridor). Each family will work together to build a collaborative project using the materials provided. DATE/TIME: October 20 th, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

4 WHAT: Saturday Studio: Graffiti Lettering with Top Mob artist Jamar Pierre After investigating Top Mob: A History of New Orleans Graffiti, students will work with educator and Top Mob artist Jamar Pierre to create their own graffiti piece employing basic principles of design such as shape, line, and color. For students in grades 5 th - 8 th $20 member; $25 non-member Advanced registration required. Visit ogdenmuseum.org/education DATE/TIME: October 22 nd, 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. WHAT: Celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) at Ogden After Hours with Los Po-Boy-Citos! Participate in a costume contest and come dressed to celebrate! Ogden After Hours is a weekly entertainment series featuring Southern musicians, films and more. Each OAH includes an art activity for kids in our Education Gallery, a cashbar and our galleries are open for viewing. DATE/TIME: October 27 th, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Located in the vibrant Warehouse Arts District of downtown New Orleans, Louisiana, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art holds the largest collection of Southern art and is recognized for its original exhibitions, public events, and educational programs which examine the development of visual art alongside Southern traditions of music, literature, and culinary heritage to provide a comprehensive story of the South. Established in 1999 and in Stephen Goldring Hall since 2003, the Museum welcomes almost 80,000 visitors annually, and attracts diverse audiences through its broad range of programming including exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, and concerts which are all part of its mission to broaden the knowledge, understanding, interpretation, and appreciation of the visual arts and culture of the American South. The Ogden Museum is open Wednesday through Monday from 10AM-5PM and also on Thursdays from 6-8PM for Ogden After Hours. Admission is free to Museum Members and $13.50 for adults, $11 for seniors 65 and older, $7.25 for children ages 5-17 and free for children under 5. The Ogden Museum is free to Louisiana Residents on Thursdays from 10AM- 5PM courtesy of The Helis Foundation. The Helis Foundation is a Louisiana private foundation, established by the William Helis Family. The Art Funds of the Helis Foundation advance access to the arts for the community through contributions that sustain operations for, provide free admission to, acquire works of art, and underwrite major exhibitions and projects of institutions within the
