2 Ongoing programs At the heart of our mission is our responsibility to be an educational resource. At the Timken Museum of Art, we believe that education is the most significant contribution a museum can make to its community. Visitors expect the museum experience to enhance their knowledge, fostering curiosity and aesthetic sensibility. The goal of our core programs is to provide our visitors with access and interpretation to art in an educational, cultural, and recreational way. Our free admission policy opens the door to great works of art for everyone. The Timken s art programs are a bridge connecting our visitors to the Museum s world-class collection. And there s a bridge for every visitor, from first timers to longtime friends, teachers, children, and students. For 50 years our hallmark has been innovative art programs, which are stimulating, entertaining and educational. All Timken Museum of Art Programs are free of charge.

3 School Programs School Tours Students are exposed to works of the great masters of European and American art and Russian Icons spanning 700 years. Interactive tours given by docents for students from kindergarten through college help to spark their curiosity, develop new ways for them to see and view art, and expand critical thinking skills. Free school tours that examine artists, subjects, styles, and technique are tailored to grade level. Teacher Training Our priceless collection offers K-12 teachers many ways to connect students to art and our special curriculum offers innovative ways for teachers to integrate art in all subject areas. We provide free workshops, including transportation to the Timken, for participants and their students, as well as our Teacher s Guide to the Collection in English and Spanish, both on-line and print, to assist teachers in integrating art into their classroom.

4 Outreach Español: For Spanish Speaking Students Launched in 1996, this bilingual program has given more than 26,000 students from Baja California an opportunity to enjoy the gift of art. With transportation to and from Balboa Park, bilingual docent-guided tours, and cultural activities, 1,500 students annually are initiated into the rewarding world of art. Outreach Español takes place from September to July in partnership with Mingei Museum, San Diego Museum of Man, Instituto de Cultura de Baja California, and the Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura. Creative Choices: Juvenile Hall PrOJect Creative Choices brings art and creative expression to this at-risk population, offering a healthy approach to communicating their thoughts, ideas, and feelings. In partnership with court schools, art is used to help youth express their thoughts and inspire them to use creativity as a means for coping with life s challenges. ARTSonTOur This school outreach program integrates art into schools in low-income communities in San Diego. Included in this program are: An in-school exhibition of reproductions of paintings from the Timken collection, a hands-on teacher workshop, a classroom guide aligned with the Common Core Standards and free field trips to the Timken for participating teachers and their students.

5 ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE This multi-week Artist in Residence program integrates art into K-12 schools. The combination of in-depth examination of works in the museum s collection, in-class discussions, and hands-on art making activities, allows students the opportunity to learn, understand and appreciate art. Each residency is designed to meet the specific need of each school. The Timken s professional teaching artist leads this sequential arts program and facilitates the classroom sessions. Teacher s Guide TO the collection This comprehensive Guide to the collection of art in the Timken is in English & Spanish and both on-line and in hard copy. The Guide assists teachers in preparing for their visit to the museum. Arts Education Resource Organization (aero) San Diego Together with other community arts organizations, the Timken networks, advocates, supports and creates a culture of art education for San Diego County public schools. We have earned the highest Seal of Approval for our standards-based school programs. Internships Offered through an intensive 12-week practicum for college-level students who are pursuing careers in the arts, art curation, and arts education.

6 Adults, Families and Visitors with Special Needs DOCENT TOurs More than 43 trained docent volunteers introduce visitors to the Museum, the collection, and special exhibitions. Tours are provided in English, Spanish, Russian, Filipino, French, Dutch and German with free tours throughout the week. Sign Language Interpreted Tours are also provided for the deaf and hard of hearing community by docents accompanied by sign language interpreters. Creative Engagement: Program for Combat Vets A comprehensive art expression program for veterans receiving treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder provides them with the opportunity to engage with art as a creative outlet for expression. The program includes art instruction to create art, an exhibition of their artwork in the community and transportation to the Timken to increase their understanding and connection to art s role in the world.

7 Memories at the Museum: Program for individuals with Alzheimer s disease This program, designed for individuals with Alzheimer s disease, is based on an award-winning program at New York s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). It provides tailor-made docent-led tours and discussions in the museum. The Timken works in partnership with UCSD Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer s Disease Research Center, the San Diego Museum of Art, Mingei International Museum and the Museum of Photographic Arts. Docent Program A museum is more than its collection. At the Timken Museum of Art, we understand that we can add value to our collection by maximizing the talents and capacity of trained volunteer docents. Every two years we offer a 56-week docent-training program which builds our docent base. Docents offer guidance, information, and education and provide a focus for discussion and debate. Our docents help to inspire future visits to the Timken as well as other museums. Family storytelling / Family Days Family Programs are integral to our educational offerings. They are a key to audience development a tool to cultivate the next generation of arts patrons. This program, free-tofamilies, is held in the galleries on various Saturdays throughout the year. Our storyteller, with more than 30 years of professional storytelling experience, incorporates theatrical gestures to her ageless and interactive tales. Storytelling for the whole family offers new ways to look at art.

8 A CHILDREN S GALLERY GUIDE This guide, in both English and Spanish, features coloring pages for our youngest visitors. A Children s Gallery Guide introduces our young audience to the Museum and doubles for elementary students in schools and children who visit the Timken with their family. SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETED TOURS These special tours are led by docents and accompanied by sign language interpreters.
