3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1
4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? Located on the near southwest side of Indianapolis, Daniel Webster School #46 is a traditional elementary school serving approximately 470 students in grades K-8. Students who attend Daniel Webster are primarily from the surrounding neighborhood. The school has a rich history that began before the turn of the century. Their 28 year partnership with the Kroger Company is recognized as one of the longest running in the nation and has resulted in many scholarships being awarded to student "Super Stars Scholars." Approximately 90% of the enrolled students receive free or reduced lunch and textbook assistance. The racial make-up is approximately 14% Hispanic, 13% African American, 61% Caucasian, and 12% Multiracial.While Daniel Webster has historically not been an English as a Second Language (ESL) school, recent changes at the building and district level have created a dynamic whereby the ESL enrollment is on a steady increase, so much so that an ESL teacher was allocated to the staffing in 2015 in an addition instructional assistant is joining the team for the school year. The school was recently awarded a Kroger technology Grant providing 137 classroom laptops to each of its homerooms in grades K-8. The remaining grant dollars will be used to further increase the school's ability to provide high quality instruction utilizing 21st Century technology and best practices. Technology use is something that all staff embraces. While at different stages of development and confidence levels, staff are provided numerous ongoing professional development opportunities designed to increase their effectiveness in utilizing technology in the classroom. The leadership and faculty of Daniel Webster believe strongly in the "Teachers training teachers" method of learning. Peer observation and support are key practices not only in addressing needs, but enriching and improving practice ofhigher functioning teachers. Page 2

The School's Vision: "We believe that all students deserve to be surrounded by adults who accept them the way they are as individuals, give them a fresh start daily, and treat them fairly and with respect. We believe that all students deserve well educated, dedicated staff that treats them as they would treat their own children. We believe that every child deserves a loving family, good friends, good nutrition, and positive communication with all people with whom they come in contact." Despite being classified as a "D" rated school in 2013, the school made significant gains the following year earning a "B" rating from the Indiana Department of Education. Curriculum is fully aligned with the new College and Career Readiness Standards and the majority of the teachers are classified as "highly qualified" by virtue of testing and/or coursework. Page 4
7 Additional Information Provide any additional information you would like to share with the public and community that were not prompted in the previous sections. Issue: Only 7% of our parents completed surveys in order to input. Our Parent Involvement Coordinator was not up to the task and despite administration attempting to address and confront her, there were other obstacles to her being able to follow through and the employee was not behaving in an ethical way regarding resources and directives including attempting to turn many of the parents against the current administration despite claiming to support us publicly. The employee was sabotaging the efforts of the principal and in direct opposition to much of what needed to happen regarding parent involvement and support. The employee was engaging in soliciting resources for the school that she would then give to friends and her own family as special favors. Our Solution: The employee no longer works at the school. The new position that is similar (PIE) is a direct report to the principal. The employee in this position is already doing a fantastic job. Issue: Student misbehavior is accelerated by many parents who are faced with challenges such as drug addiction, poverty, and mental illness. The Prosecutor's office reports that our school's radius of 1 mile has the highest mental illness related crime in the city. Our Solution (s): While we cannot control the neighborhood, we have implemented and are embracing a Positive Behavior Intervention Supports program (PBIS). This focuses on asset-based thinking and approaching student behavior not from a negative or punitive position, but from a positive one. We have a team who attended training over the summer and came up with a school wide PBIS plan. In addition, the district has embraced this thinking as well and it is reflected in our district's new Student Code of Conduct. Our staff has had training on PBIS and will continue to do so. There is a conference in Chicago that I plan to send my team to as part of a partnership with our business partner, Kroger. In addition, we are embarking on a new partnership involving mentoring with the Prosecutor's Office. Our middle school students (girls in particular) will be matched with attorneys and professionals as mentors. Our 90% poverty rate is not something we can directly impact, but our school's annual Career Fair has provided many with much needed jobs and instruction in "soft skills" to retain employment. In addition, our parent center has a computer for parent use and we have dedicated a room to our parents so that they have a safe place to land and work on whatever they need - job applications, social services applications, ing, etc... Our students also have the opportunity to earn $ each semesteras scholarship dollars. Once they graduate from high school we will send the dollars directly to their institution for an added layer of support. In order to earn these dollars, students must maintain good grades, behavior, and attendance. We also tie this criteria to our end of the year activity, a field trip sponsored by Kroger to Great Times (a local fun park). Students must earn a 3 part ticket - one part for each criteria mark.
