1 Institutional Overview The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) College of Education (COE) offers its students a unique learning environment with direct preparation in PK-16 and other community settings. The College is composed of three academic departments that offer 11 undergraduate, 20 graduate, and 3 certificate programs. Collectively, these programs are in early childhood education, elementary education, secondary education, special education, English language learning, clinical mental health counseling, school counseling, school psychology, higher education, learning and technology, curriculum and instruction, and teacher education. s are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related s (clinical mental health counseling, school counseling) and the National Association of School Psychologists (school psychology). Teacher Preparation With respect to teacher preparation specifically, the UNLV COE provides numerous routes to teacher licensure for candidates. All programs are research-based as well as steeped in the pedagogical practices that support the academic achievement of all students. The variety of programs offered through the COE are designed to meet the needs of enrollees at different stages in their professional and personal lives through a variety of course work and field experiences. COE programs offer face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. The Education Student Services Center (ESSC) and COE faculty provide continuous support to candidates as they matriculate through programs. Alternative route to licensure (ARL) program candidates, who hold a bachelor s degree and pass all requirements successfully, are eligible for a conditional teaching license from the Nevada Department of Education (DOE). Successful candidates can begin teaching after one semester of coursework. ARL program courses are at the graduate level and meet the highest academic standards. COE faculty offer coursework for students in external ARL partners that include Troops to Teachers, Teach for America, and Clark County School District (CCSD). Table 1 provides a list of available routes to becoming a teacher in Nevada, and additional information may be found at College and Faculty Highlights The mission of the COE is to achieve local, national, and international prominence as we lead the way with new knowledge and innovative practices in our teaching, research, and service activities. As part of this Top Tier mission, the College boasts seven research centers and clinics dedicated to scholarship and best practices in literacy, autism spectrum disorders, mental health, assessment and evaluation, and multicultural, STEM, and early childhood education. The COE made up of nearly 80 full-time and 50 part-time faculty members, along with 20 professional and classified staff. The UNLV COE actively collaborates with CCSD on a variety of service and research initiatives. s can be categorized into four areas: Growing the Teacher Pipeline, Professional Development s, K-12 Student Services, and Evaluation and Intervention. Additional information can be found on these programs at COE faculty have obtained extensive federal funding and development dollars to support (a) teacher training in special education (e.g., PROJECT SPEN:TT, Dual License for Autism and Intellectual Disability program); (b) doctoral student training in special education with specific attention to the needs of English Language Learners (i.e., PROJECT CULTURED); (c) student scholarships for those studying to be special educators (i.e., Rodman Scholars); (d) STEM-related curriculum and pedagogical development (e.g., Next Generation Science Standards funding, Argumentation research, Learning to Learn Intervention, Intuition K-3 Mathematics Project); and (e) teacher training in English Language Arts (e.g., BELL project) Additional information on external funding awards may be found at 1

4 Future Growth/Strategic Plan The UNLV COE is committed to recruiting teachers at local, state, national, and international levels. Recruitment will need to occur at a variety of levels based on the limited recruitment pool locally and statewide. The following are major recruitment initiatives: 1. Expand community college partnerships to explore 2+2 and other curricular options, as well as involve them in recruitment campaigns; 2. Engage in traditional and multimedia recruitment activities targeted towards individuals at high schools, community colleges, and universities (e.g., Future Educators event, campus visits, correspondence with key stakeholders, television, radio); 3. Continue and expand partnerships related to TEACH Schools; 4. Develop a social media campaign to brand teaching profession (e.g., #teachonpurpose), highlighting current teachers and those in teacher preparation programs; and 5. Increase presence on website and other UNLV-related outlets to promote success stories related to teaching. Barriers to Growth/Expansion The UNLV COE is aware of the many barriers to the growth and expansion of various teacher preparation programs- particularly those at the local and state level. The College is committed to working with local, statewide, and national representatives to overcome the barriers related to recruitment and retention of qualified teachers. The following are major barriers to growth that are currently being addressed: 1. The limited pool of qualified candidates who meet minimum qualifications to enter various teacher preparation programs, indicating the need for wide range recruitment efforts on both a national and international level; 2. The negative view of the teaching profession, which calls for a rebranding of the profession; 3. Teacher salary and room for wage growth or other performance-related incentives; 4. Limited University funding for marketing and travel related to recruitment; and 5. Limited University resources (e.g., salary, graduate assistantships, scholarships) that may hinder recruitment and retention of faculty and graduate students. 4
