3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. <br><br> The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? is a relatively new school established in 2005 to accommodate the rapidly growing population in south Lee County. The comprehensive high school consists of forty land locked acres which limits potential growth of both the building as well as athletic facilities. South High is located on Plantation Road in a commercial area as opposed to a neighborhood. Thus, the school draws its population from a multitude of surrounding areas; including neighborhoods within two miles radius to ones as far away as thirty miles. During its inaugural year, South High's population was 972 students with a graduating class of 78. The school has grown consistently over the past few years, with a current population in excess of 1814 students with an expected graduating class of 389. is a comprehensive preparatory school with a focus on career and college readiness. Most students at South Fort Myers High School take advantage of the numerous career academies available to them. These academies enable our graduates to enter the job market with marketable skills and competencies that are required by today's industries and businesses. South High offers six unique academies; Building Construction and Design, Business and Informational Technology, Public Service, Pre-Law/Criminal Justice and Military, Manufacturing and Engineering Technology, and Medical. Many of our academies offer certification upon completion of the third year of the academy. Students are able to finish their high school careers with advanced knowledge of potential majors and career opportunities. South Fort Myers High provides college preparatory courses, which includes honors level and Advanced Placement. In addition, students may also take advantage of dual enrollment and early admissions opportunities provided by a qualified instructor on the high school campus or, if they prefer, at Edison State College and Florida Gulf Coast University to earn college credits. The past two years, has been the number one school of choice within the South Zone. The increased student enrollment has resulted in a 12% increase in the minority population. Current demographics of the school population are 38% Caucasian, 35% Hispanic, 21% African American, and 6% other races. Teachers value, embrace, and recognize cultural and language diversity. Accommodations and interventions are in place to ensure success of all students no matter of their learning level, ethnic background, or language barrier. Additionally, English language learners and economically disadvantaged populations have annually increased. There are a total of 90 dedicated teachers employed at, as well as 5 administrators. Of these teachers, 15 % have 15 plus years of teaching experience and 56 % have between 6-14 years' experience. Twelve teachers have been named Lee County Teachers of the Year, while 12 have received various other awards and accolades. Challenges facing South Fort Myers High include attendance, high mobility rate, downward trend of students making adequate gains in both math and writing state based assessments. South experiences low community/parent involvement as evidenced by continuously poor turnout at monthly School Advisory Committee (SAC) meetings. South Fort Myers High has had a change in leadership during the school year, with a new Assistant Principal of Curriculum and a new Principal. The new leadership has created new policies and procedures to address these challenges and improve achievement. Page 2

Mission 's mission statement supports that of Lee County School District which is to ensure that each student achieves his or her highest personal potential. South accomplishes this by preparing students to successfully enter the world of work and or postsecondary education by challenging them with rigorous academic and technical studies. Vision The vision of the Lee County School District is to be a world class school system; furthers this vision by promoting lifelong learning through academic rigor and relevance. fulfills the obligations of its mission and vision by offering career and technical academies that provide students with opportunities to obtain skills relevant to those needed in the current work force. While building the required base of knowledge for success, academy students have the ability to work alongside professionals as interns gaining valuable hands on experience. Upon completion of an academy program many students graduate with certificates making them readily employable in the community. Students wishing to continue their formal education beyond high school are provided the necessary rigor through an extensive honors, dual enrollment and Advanced Placement curriculum. These courses emulate the standards of the State University system and provide students the opportunity to graduate and enter college with multiple college credits towards an associates or bachelor's degree. In order to ensure the success of all learners, South continues to establish a network of support, interventions, and strategies. These programs offer students of varying levels and abilities opportunities to improve on their academics and pursue personal interests and passions beyond the classroom. Page 3

Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. obtained a school grade of "A" for the school year. The increase of two letter grades exemplifies the dedication of all stakeholders and academic successes on district assessments, industry certifications, and accelerated courses. South Dropped back to a B during the school year due to the number of at risk students not graduating. South has partnered with Lee County Work Force Development and created a new program, Destination Graduation, to mentor at risk students and keep them on track for graduation. Career Academies are one of South Fort Myers' many achievements. These courses are oftentimes why students choose South to attend high school. Over the last two years, students have attained 1396 industry certifications in the areas of Adobe, Microsoft Office Suites, EKG, Phlebotomy Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, Firefighter I, Veterinary Assisting, and Emergency Medical Responder. Industry Certifications increased from 428 in the school year to 968 in the school year. Over the past three years, staff members have taken part in Kagan, Next Generation Content Reading Area Professional Development, and Professional Learning Communities (PLC) professional development. These professional developments have led to an increase in rigor, relevance, and collaboration within the learning process. Once a month, teachers participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLC). This year's PLC focuses on our school improvement plan and allows teachers to collaborate by reviewing data to promote growth and intervention school wide. There are challenges within PLC, including team members holding each other accountable, willingness to share data, and for some actively participating in a collaborative team is a new concept. In addition to PLC, teachers meet bi-monthly to common plan with their like subject areas. There is a plan in place for the school year to provide the common planning for teachers of like classes in an effort to better support the PLC and common planning process. South Fort Myers' Junior ROTC program has been ranked in the top 8% of JROTC programs through-out the nation and the largest in Lee County. Out of our total school enrollment of 1800 students, we have over 330 students enrolled in Leadership. The program emphasizes ethical values and principles that underlie good citizenship, as well as the ability to think logically and to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing. Students learn to develop leadership potential, while living and working cooperatively with others. Basing data on state FCAT Writes, there is a three year negative growth in the number of students proficient in writing. As a result, South High has put in place Wolfpack Writes. This is a school wide writing initiative, was designed to increase writing abilities of all students. Writing is a critical component of Common Core Standards and the expectation is that all students will be able to write logical arguments based on substantive claims, sound reasoning, and relevant evidence. Departments have been assigned months where they are responsible for a text based writing activity. The activity provides students with the opportunity to write, receive feedback, and rewrite. South Fort Myers High has also been provided 4 teacher leaders to assist teachers who need guidance in creating and/or teaching writing in the classroom, planning and modeling lessons, classroom management, or assistance with student data.
