3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. <br><br> The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? Description of the School The is located on St. Andrews Bay in Panama City Florida. The kids are referred by the Bay County School System and the Department of Juvenile Justice. AMIkids PCMI has been operating since 1974 and because of this longevity, has established many advantageous relationships with the community. As a result of these long standing relationships, AMIkids PCMI has an excellent track record of fund raising through a variety of events as well as a specialty license plate. Community awareness is a big advantage. It is difficult to find anyone in Bay County that hasn't heard of the good work being done at the Marine Institute. The facility located at 200 East Beach Drive is a 36,000 square foot building and has ample space for classes as well as a fully functional dock, ropes course and basket ball area. AMIkids PCMI has an experienced leadership team and turnover is very low. Currently the staff exceeds 130 years of accumulated experience at working with this population of youth. The Marine Institute theme is still seen at the school located on the water and each year a student dive team enjoys the benefits of having more than one scuba instructor on staff. Most notably is the fact that AMIkids PCMI has a Board of Trustees that is very active and involved and some board members have been dedicated to the mission for decades. The challenges we face are the same challenges most not for profits face these days; namely securing funding to provide the extras such as field trips and student incentives as well as funds to make material improvements in our 65 year old facility. Currently the board is embarking on a quarter million dollar capital campaign to secure funding to bring the physical plant up to par. AMIkids PCMI does run three separate bus routes a day. Therefore vehicle maintenance is a constant challenge and quite costly. AMIkids PCMI enjoys an excellent relationship with and receives a great deal of support from the school district. Demographics of Probation Kids: Males 70% and Females 30% years old Average age at enrollment 16.1 years 30% of the student body is minority 26% Black 2% Hispanic 70 % White 2% Other 25% of the kids were committed for a felony property offense 39% of the kids were committed for a misdemeanor offense Average age at First Offense 14.2 years Average # of Prior Arrest: 7.4 Page 2

5 School's Purpose Provide the school's purpose statement and ancillary content such as mission, vision, values, and/or beliefs. Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. School's Purpose Inc. provides our community's kids an opportunity to turn into responsible young adults. Specific Goals of the school: Reduce Juvenile Crime Increase Academic Gains Increase Employability Skills Increase in Community Service endeavors to create a family atmosphere of warmth, discipline, and empowerment. We teach and model the importance of setting attainable self-improvement goals and guide each student to help them achieve those goals. We partner with the Department of Juvenile Justice and the local School District as well as the community to provide services to kids who might otherwise fall through the cracks. We make all decisions based on what is best for the student. Page 3

6 Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement has an excellent track record with students who lack motivation and belief in their own ability or the skills to succeed in the community. We stick with the kids through the trials of trying to find themselves and their place in the world. We have done this through human interaction. We work through the issues the kids bring with them without the use of hardware, i.e. handcuffs, razor wire, fences, etc. Our founder Bob Rosof said "we do what we do through a process of involvement with the kids not detached from the kids". We have remained true to that philosophy. Of the probation kids, we have an 88% success rate. That is to say of the kids who come to us on probation most will go to become productive tax paying citizens. The challenges in the future are to better prepare the kids for career paths. This means increased vocational training and readiness to work programs. Also needed is more family counseling services. Our families are struggling to gain a sense of community and being a part of the American dream. Also one of the big challenges at Panama City Marine Institute is to ensure an environment that is conducive to learning. We desperately need to obtain funds to renovate and update our physical plant which is in need of a new HVAC system and a face lift of the building. Page 4

7 Additional Information Provide any additional information you would like to share with the public and community that were not prompted in the previous sections. has worked with over 4,800 kids and families from Bay County since inception and obtained over 600 GED certificates. We have an all volunteer dedicated Board of Trustees that meets quarterly and is composed of business and community leaders. Some of our Board members have been involved for decades and provide a great deal of financial support as well as business expertise and guidance in the areas of financial management and legislative/community awareness. It is hard to find someone from Bay County that has not known someone that has been through this wonderful program. We are proud to be of service to this wonderful community. Page 5
