3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? is located on Alamance Community College's main campus. The school serves juniors and seniors from all high schools in the Alamance-Burlington School System. Students complete their high school required classes with ABSS certified high school teachers, and they take all electives through ACC instructors. Their electives can be either college university transfer classes or certification classes. The school has been in existence for six and 1/2 years. It is beginning its 7th year at the beginning of the second semester. The student body's size has remained around 75 students over the last three years. The school can have up to 100 students. The Middle College class schedule and calendar are unique. The school's calendar is more closely aligned with the Alamance Community College schedule than with the school district in order for students to take ACC classes. The school day for high school classes begins at 12:20 and ends at 5:05. Students may take ACC classes before or after their high school class times. Student schedules follow individual student needs. Some students may take only one high school class per semester but also take three ACC classes per semester. Some students may be taking one high school class and one ACC class per semester. The school's student body is culturally diverse with a population that is 68% White, 18% African American, 14% Hispanic. Some students are highly academically motivated and strive to earn as many college university transfer credits as possible. Some students come to Middle College because they have adult responsibilities, such as parenting. Middle College hours, as well as having the opportunity to take ACC classes helps these students with both work hours and preparing themselves for life after high school graduation. Some students come from home school experiences,and Middle College is a helpful transition for them before they go to a college campus. Some students come to Middle College because they don't feel connected to their high school. The smaller environment gives them the opportunity to feel connected to their school. One of the biggest challenges for both teachers and students is not having classrooms that are completely dedicated to Middle College use only. Teachers and students do not have access to their classrooms until ten minutes before the first class at 12:20 begins. This makes coming in early for assistance challenging as all five Middle College teachers share a very cramped teacher workroom. Another challenge is that teachers do not have another person in their content area for collaboration. Teachers do collaborate across content areas, but they are very much the entire department for their particular content area. Page 2

5 School's Purpose Provide the school's purpose statement and ancillary content such as mission, vision, values, and/or beliefs. Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. The is a non-traditional innovative high school whose goal is to produce high school graduates with definite academic post secondary plans and credits earned beyond high school that contribute to making those plans become a reality. We value positive relationships among our teachers and students that enable our students to engage in meaningful and relevant instruction. We believe that all students can succeed and that our responsibility is provide provide the necessary supports to make that success happen. Teachers are available to assist students before and after classes every day. Teachers also provide assistance to students by holding Saturday School twice each nine weeks for students who are behind or who need assistance in their course work. Our guidance counselor meets with all students regularly to assist students in registering each semester and planning for their future after high school. In addition to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, we offer our students an opportunity to take a wide range of elective courses through Alamance Community College. Our population consists of juniors and seniors of which 68% are White, 18% African American, 14% Hispanic and/or multi-racial, and 30% qualify for free or reduced lunch. We are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction. The overall program is designed to provide students with a smaller learning community that enables each student to reach his or her full potential. Page 3

6 Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. Based on the school's continued yearly academic progress, The Middle College was recognized by Piedmont Triad Education Consortium as a Signature School of the Piedmont Triad. ABMC rexperienced significant achievement gains from The ABC Composite score in 2010 was ABMC grew in 2011 to an ABC Composite score of In , only one EOC was given and student scores in biology showed growth. ABMC had made AYP for the past three years. This year the school has also earned United Way's Chairman's award for surpassing its United Way goal and having 100% participation from its staff. The Middle College students have also contributed to their community. The Middle College Key Club raised funds for United Way through a classroom Mile of Pennies competition and a Christmas food drive for Loaves and Fishes. Individual students have contributed to the community through graduation service projects that have included pet supplies collection drives for a volunteer shelter and baby supplies for a local nonprofit. ABMC is striving to increase rigor in all of its classrooms through its use of one to one technology and engaging and relevant lessons. Teachers are participating in ABSS staff development and have also had staff development on site to grow technology skills. ABMC teachers are also visiting and observing teaches on other campuses to learn from others in their content areas and make collaborative connections. ABMC teachers have planned a multi-disciplinary student project for spring 2013 that will focus on studying both the history and the water quality of the Haw River. The river runs through the ACC campus and has been a major contributor economically to Alamance County. It has also been a major source of pollution. Efforts to clean up the river have been and continue to be successful. Students will actively participate in studying the river's current state. ABMC will continue to seek opportunities for students to participate in learning experiences that broaden their understanding of their community. ABMC want to increase the number of students it serves to allow more students to take advantage of the school's opportunities. Through presentations to community organizations and communication with areas businesses, ABMC will continue to educate citizens of Alamance County about Middle College and its program opportunities. 7 Additional Information Provide any additional information you would like to share with the public and community that were not prompted in the previous sections. Many factors have contributed to a steady achievement improvement at ABMC. A strong relationship exists among students and faculty with extensive support structures. There is maximum continuity in relationships as students have the same content teacher for their high school courses for both their junior and senior years. Faculty is available to parents and students through and texting for information on homework and class work. With 1:1 technology, faculty and students utilize technology in teaching and learning daily. Furthermore, teachers share common planning and collaborate on instructional strategies that engage students in content. Classroom walk-throughs by the administrator gather data used to assess areas for improvement and additional supports needed for teachers and students An intentional analysis of all student benchmark and EOC data has ben used to evaluate lessons and plan targeted instruction of priority content areas.
