3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. <br><br> The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? (CTCOHS) is an online high school hosted by Central Texas College (CTC) and is physically located on the CTC Campus in Killeen, Texas. From September 1, 2008 to August 31, 2013, the high school had 989 students, 490 of whom were females and 499 were males. Twentynine percent of its students were below 18 years old; sixty-three percent were 18 to 25 years old; and eight percent were above 25 years old. Sixty percent of the students were enrolled in ; thirteen percent in ; and fourteen percent each in and The three major ethnic groups were White (36%), African-American (32%), and Hispanic (17%). From 2008 to 2011 the high school, because of its proximity to a major U.S. Military installation, primarily served active duty military, their spouses and children, and local civilian students who either could not or chose not to attend a traditional public high school. Since its inception, our school has depended upon printed material to conduct its high school completion program. However, in 2003 the high school began an all-out effort to produce curriculum for online delivery. On September 1, 2012, the high school began offering online all curricula for the high school diploma program. Owned by Central Texas College (CTC), the high school operates from the CTC Central Campus in Killeen, Texas. CTC is unique in its global scope with satellite campuses throughout the United States and worldwide via its long-standing relationship with the military. The relationship with the College offers our high school students the opportunity to access many of CTC's services including CTC library's online databases, the CTC Academic Studio (a tutoring service), and access to dual credit enrollment. Our major challenge is the increased residency credits required of digital learning institutions, which has affected our enrollments. Prior to June 2013, CTCOHS followed the state requirement of two-semester hours residence for all students wishing to attain a high school diploma. The two credit hours, in the coursework system, equates to four online courses (each course offered online is.5 credits). The new requirements levied on CTCOHS to require 25% of all coursework in residency (lowering the number of courses completed in other accredited schools for transfer credit) now requires our students to complete no less than eleven (11) online courses for the state minimum HS diploma (22 credits). To attain CTCOHS's standard HS diploma, students must now complete thirteen (13) online courses for the state recommended HS diploma (26 credits). The 25% rule implemented by AdvancED has caused a significant drop in student enrollments. Page 2

5 School's Purpose Provide the school's purpose statement and ancillary content such as mission, vision, values, and/or beliefs. Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. As a subordinate of Central Texas College, CTC Online High School (CTCOHS) shares the philosophy of meeting the educational and training needs of students in its key service populations, the civilian and military communities. CTCOHS is committed to a belief in the dignity of the individual student, to excellence in teaching, to universal access to the most recent and thorough academic material and instruction, and to programs and curricula that reflect changes in society and technology. In CTCOHS's vision, student diversity contributes to the educational process. We endeavor to ensure employees, teachers, and community work together to support CTCOHS's worldwide mission to be a leader in the digital learning community. CTCOHS leadership, staff, and teachers consistently communicate student performance expectations and work individually with each student to ensure that he or she is provided with the support and guidance needed to succeed in the coursework. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. 's (CTCOHS's) most notable achievement over the past 10 years are the advances made in the development and presentation of standards aligned curriculum in an online environment. However, the following are areas, based on the new Digital Learning Standards, we at CTCOHS must work to improve: Marketing: Although CTCOHS has recently received some help from Central Texas College marketing staff, we must increase our efforts in this area. To address this deficiency CTCOHS was permitted to hire an additional staff member in the fall of 2013; the newly hired staff member is slowly making progress toward helping improve CTCOHS's high school marketing efforts. Stakeholder Communication: Stakeholder feedback has been and continues to be a concern. Despite an active stakeholder survey initiative, CTCOHS has only received a very small response from all stakeholders. We are hopeful that the digital format presented by ASSIST will improve stakeholder feedback. Analysis of Student Learning: Although CTCOHS has maintained thorough student records in the past, we have only recently implemented a digital process to track and analyze student successes. We see the opportunity to make great strides in improving student needs and implementing additional methods to improve teaching and curriculum presentation. Page 4
