1 2014 Media Guide European Rowing Championships Belgrade, Serbia 30 May June 2014 WORLD ROWING AND WWF PARTNERS FOR CLEAN WATER

2 WORLD ROWING AND WWF PARTNERS FOR CLEAN WATER Working towards a cleaner Danube River The Serbian Rowing Federation and the local branch of WWF have joined forces to bring attention to Europe s legendary Danube River. The 2014 European Rowing Championships in Belgrade is the perfect occasion to highlight this. The programme involves a number of Serbian schools. Students will be provided with an interactive environmental game to help them understand and appreciate the importance of managing the Danube s natural fresh-water eco-system. Each student will also be given rowing machine tuition by some of Serbia s top athletes and coaches. The Serbian Rowing Federation is showing further support by sending a boat from each rowing club in Serbia to a Danube Water Day. This will emphasise the close connection between rowing and clean water. During the European Rowing Championships the WWF tent will be present with interactive games that show why it is so important to preserve clean water. In downtown Belgrade, WWF will stage an ergometer competition tied in with rowing and the need for clean water. WWF and World Rowing, the sport s international governing body, are now in the fourth year of their global Clean Water Partnership. This harnesses all rowers, national rowing federations and all rowing clubs to work towards safeguarding their own freshwater environment. World Rowing itself is committed to setting new standards in sustainable sports event management particularly in respect of clean/fresh water policies. Mario Romulic WWF

4 1. General 1.1 Introduction The European Rowing Championships has come of age. This is the eighth year of the reintroduced form of the Championships and, in its early season spot, it has become an essential event on the rowing calendar for European nations. The first event on the international rowing calendar this year was World Rowing Cup I in Sydney (AUS). As some European nations could not make it to Sydney, the European Championships will be their coming-out regatta for the opportunity to find how they rank for the coming season. Belgrade s Lake Sava last hosted an international event two years ago when nearly 700 rowers competed in the first World Rowing Cup of the 2012 season. The man-made Lake Sava is a popular recreation area in both the summer and winter for local residents. At this time of year, the beaches are full of sunbathers and temperatures are likely to be warm. The European Rowing Championships is open to the 43 European national rowing federations, including Israel. The programme consists of the 14 Olympic boat classes plus three International boat classes (lightweight men s and women s single sculls and lightweight men s pair). Last year 34 nations took part with more than 500 athletes participating. Germany topped the overall medals table taking nine medals, three of them gold. Italy came second, continuing their regular top three success at the European Championships. The Czech Republic has proved to be the powerhouse in the single sculling events under the influence of Mirka Knapkova and Ondrej Synek while Lithuania has established themselves as the country to beat in both the men s and women s double sculls. Right from the beginning Romania has taken the European Championships very seriously and in recent years they have dominated the women s eight and the women s pair. This media guide has been designed to bring the essential information together in one useful place. As well as practical information for media representatives attending the regatta, there is statistical coverage of past regattas, a race-by-race Who to Watch which includes highlighted athletes and an easy guide to finding further information. World Rowing would like to acknowledge our partners Parmigiani Fleurier, Vnesheconombank and BMW for their support of rowing and also our strategic partner, WWF, World Rowing s partner for clean water. To you, the media, we wish to extend a warm welcome to Lake Sava. We appreciate your interest and enthusiasm in our sport and as the suppliers of rowing information to the world we want to help you have a great experience. World Rowing welcomes any feedback on the services provided as we endeavour to make your experience a positive one. 7 General 1.4 Rowing in Serbia Rowing in the territory of Serbia boasts a rich history shaped by the politics of the region. The first rowing club was opened in 1883 in Becej under the Austro-Hungarian influence. Two years later the Danubius club began in the city of Novi Sad which, like Begej, is in the northern part of Serbia. Over time the sport arrived in Belgrade and Smederevo and these four areas remain the most important and active rowing cities in Serbia today. After WWII, the number of rowing clubs grew with a rivalry taking root between the Partizan and Red Star clubs in Belgrade. Both of these clubs were established as part of larger athletic clubs where more than 30 sports gather under one name. They are situated on the River Sava not far from Lake Sava. Until 1991, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia competed together as Yugoslavia. After the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the three countries started to compete individually. Serbia was first part of SRJ (Savezna Republika Jugoslavija), then Serbia & Montenegro and finally Serbia. Since Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia started competing individually internationally, statistically they have won more medals than when they competed together. Today rowing is well known in Serbia and is one of the country s most successful sports. There are 17 clubs and about 700 registered rowers covering all rowing categories. This number is steadily increasing with masters and recreational rowers making up part of this increase. Nikola Stojic is Serbia s most successful rower. He is a four-time Olympian with a career that spans over two decades. Stojic, like other top Serbian rowers including women s single sculler Iva Obradovic, spent some of his rowing career at a United States university as a student athlete. The men s pair has been Stojic s main boat and last year at the European Rowing Championships Stojic, then 38 years old, won gold. Stojic s best Olympic result was fifth at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Stojic remains as one of Serbia s top performing rowers with the men s four also performing well. Typically, national team rowers are recruited from clubs throughout Serbia. In recent years there has also been an initiative to talent scout in regions where rowing is not available. This method has worked well with two members of the London Olympic men s four coming via this talent identification programme. The national team is based at Lake Sava and at varying times of the year the team goes to training camps in places such as Lake Gruza and Silver Lake. 8 2. Event Information 2.1 Key media information About Belgrade The Republic of Serbia is located in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. Serbia s population is around 7.2 million (July 2011 estimate) of which 1.6 million live in its capital city, Belgrade. Belgrade lies at the confluence of two rivers, the Danube and the Sava. Belgrade s Ada Ciganlija Regatta Course is situated on Sava Lake, 5km from the city centre. This river island was artificially transformed into a peninsula when two dams were built in Both banks of the lake are now attractive spots for families and recreational activities in the spring and summer seasons. Lake Sava is also crucial to Belgrade in providing drinking water. 12 2.4 Who to watch Women s Pair (W2-) An unbroken winning streak since 2008 by Romania may be under threat. Great Britain is boating their 2013 World Champion combination of Helen Glover and Polly Swann and they will be putting the heat on Cristina Grigoras and Nicoleta Albu of Romania. Great Britain and Romania are likely to shine above the rest of the competition with many of the other combinations relatively new pair partnerships. Keep an eye out for Serbia with their top woman rower, Iva Obradovic teamed up with Ivana Filipovic. The duo finished seventh at last year s World Rowing Championships and in front of a home crowd they will be looking to impress. Watch out too for the Netherlands who are part of the strong Dutch women s sweep squad. The duo has already clocked up a 2012 European Championship gold medal and a 2013 World Championship bronze medal followed by a win at the World Rowing Cup in Sydney earlier this season. At last year s European Champs however, Blink and Steenman were upstaged by Serbia s Nenad Bedik and Nikola Stojic. Bedik is still in the boat with new partner Dusan Bogicevic and their home advantage must be taken into consideration. This is a boat class in which the British regularly excel, but a new combination this year adds an unknown element. Alan Sinclair and Nathaniel Reilly-O Donnell raced in their country s four last year and will now try their luck in the pair. Keep an eye out for Greece who have won this event four of the seven times it has been raced at the Europeans and also watch for Germany who finished second to the Dutch earlier this month at the Wedau Regatta Media Guide, European Rowing Championships, Belgrade (SRB)

The 2013 European Championship winners, Donata Vistartaite and Milda Valciukiate of Lithuania are back with a 2013 World Championship title giving them extra credence. Vistartaite and Valciukaite will face the silver and bronze medallists from last year s European Champs, Poland and Belarus. Belarus is a new combination with the great Ekaterina Karsten teamed up with Tatsiana Kukhta. Poland s duo remain the same of Olympic medallist Magdalena Fularczyk along with Natalia Madaj. Great Britain has put together a strong combination of Frances Houghton and Victoria Thornley. Despite this being their first international race together in a double, their individual experience will undoubtedly shine through. 14 Men s Double Sculls (M2x): The European Championships will be the 2014 coming out for last year s World Champions, Nils Jakob Hoff and Kjetil Borch of Norway. Have they already found early season speed? Hoff and Borch will have a heavy dose of competition to put them to the test. The Norwegians will face both the silver and bronze medallists from the 2013 World Rowing Championships - Lithuania and Italy. Lithuania s Rolandas Mascinskas and Saulius Ritter come to Belgrade on the back of a gold medal at the World Rowing Cup in Sydney in March. This must be a confidence boost when they take on Norway and Italy. Italy s Francesco Fossi and Romano Battisti will be motivated to defend their 2013 European Championship title in this event. Azerbaijan is another crew to watch. Boris Yotov and Aleksandar Aleksandrov are both young, talented single scullers but have also been known to show their worth when teamed up in the double. Keep an eye out too for perennial partners, Hans Gruhne and Stephan Krueger of Germany. Gruhne and Krueger recently won the double at the Wedau Regatta. Andrew Triggs Hodge, George Nash, Mohamed Sbihi and Alex Gregory have come together after rigorous trials and they will show their muscle against the 2013 World and European Champions, the Netherlands. The Dutch have had one change from their 2013 winning line-up and will be hoping that this boat proves to be their country s flagship crew. Keep an eye out for Greece. In recent years they have regularly medalled in this boat class at the European Champs and the 2014 crew includes the return to rowing of Ioannis Tsilis and Georgios Tziallas who were both in the fourth-placed London Olympic crew Media Guide, European Rowing Championships, Belgrade (SRB)

Ever since this duo combined in late 2012 they have turned races to gold. They are the twotime European Champions, the reigning World Champions and currently Italy s most successful crew. Can they continue in 2014? Up against the Italians will be the return of 2012 Olympic Champion, Katherine Copeland to Great Britain s boat. Copeland will be racing with Imogen Walsh who placed fourth in this boat class at last year s World Rowing Championships. Watch out too for Germany s Lena Mueller and Anja Noske. Mueller and Noske finished second at last year s European Championships and third at the World Rowing Championships. 16 Lightweight Men s Double Sculls (LM2x): This boat class is shaping up to be one of the most competitive of the regatta. To begin with it would be hard to overlook the 2013 World Champions, Kristoffer Brun and Are Strandli of Norway. The duo pulled off a stunner at last year s World Rowing Championships when they took the gold. But Brun and Strandli have new challenges this year. Reigning European Champions, Stany Delayre and Jeremie Azou of France are back racing. Delayre missed last year s World Champs due to a boat accident leaving Azou to race to second in the lightweight single. Delayre and Azou will be hoping to reassert their position in Coming out through the ranks are Eleftherios Konsolas and Spyridon Giannaros of Greece. The duo won the World Rowing Cup earlier this year in Sydney and also have a 2013 World Champion gold medal from the lightweight quad among their recent successes. Then there are the 2013 World silver medallists, Simon Schuerch and Mario Gyr of Switzerland. The pair come from their country s Olympic lightweight men s four but are doing well with the two-oared variety of the sport. Don t forget about the bands of brothers. Tycho and Vincent Muda will race for the Netherlands. Jan and Ondrej Vetesnik will do it for the Czech Republic. And Paul and Bernhard Sieber are in it for Austria. The Danes are the current European and World Champions and this is their specialty event. This year at the Europeans, however, Denmark is facing the 2012 Olympic silver medallists Great Britain. The Chambers brothers have been pulled back into the British boat and they will be out to prove they are ready to go in sweep rowing after a year of racing in the lightweight double. Watch out too for the French. France finished third at last year s European Champs and then went on to a fourth place at the World Rowing Championships. This may put the Germans back when it comes to picking up medals, but there is still a lot of talent in their younger line-up. The Germans will face the Netherlands and Italy who have both done some tweaking to their line-up that finished second and third respectively at last year s European Champs. Keep an eye out too for Ukraine. They are the reigning Olympic Champions and for years Ukraine has emphasised this boat class as their priority. Post-London retirements have meant a new bunch of scullers are starting to emerge. 18 Men s Quadruple Sculls (M4x): The World Champion Croatians are not racing which leaves a gap to be filled at the head of the field. Olympic Champions Germany will be aiming to be the ones to fill it. The Germans have retained Tim Grohmann and Karl Schulze from last year s silver medal World Championship crew and have added well-known names in sculling, Philipp Wende and Kai Fuhrmann. If current results are anything to go by Poland will be in the medal mix. The Poles won the Wedau Regatta earlier this month and have boosted their line-up for the European Champs by adding junior single sculling World Champion Natan Wegrzycki-Szmczyk to the boat. Watch out too for Italy who finished third last year at the European Championships and have the very skilled Simone Raineri sitting in stroke seat. Also look out for Estonia. The crew includes two members of the Olympic fourth-placed crew and at the 2013 World Championships they finished fifth. Knapkova took gold at last year s European Championships, but then finished fourth earlier this year at the World Rowing Cup in Sydney. Knapkova s experience, however, is bound to play to her advantage when she lines up in Belgrade. Julia Levina of Russia has plenty of strengths and experience is one of them. Levina, 41, is in her 19th year of international rowing, which includes four Olympic Games. Levina, however can be inconsistent, but when she has a good race she is hard to beat. Also experienced is Annekatrin Thiele of Germany. Thiele is usually found winning medals in the quadruple sculls but she has had stints in the single. Keep an eye out for Austria s Magdalena Lobnig as an up-and-coming sculler. Lobnig, 23, was second at last year s Europeans and a fourth-place at the 2013 World Rowing Championships definitely got heads turning her way Media Guide, European Rowing Championships, Belgrade (SRB)

Tufte is the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Champion but took a break following sub-par results at the London Olympics. Belgrade will be Tufte s return. This return is unlikely to faze the reigning World Champion Ondrej Synek of the Czech Republic. For the last four years Synek has been the most consistent of the single scullers. Olympic Champion Mahe Drysdale (NZL) has admitted that the Czech is currently in a class of his own. But the single can be won or lost on a couple of strokes and Synek will have a bunch of scullers pushing him including Olympic bronze medallist Alan Campbell of Great Britain and 2013 World Championship bronze medallist Marcel Hacker of Germany. Look out too for Roel Braas of the Netherlands who started to show real single sculling speed last year and also Mindaugas Griskonis of Lithuania who comes to Belgrade following a silver medal at the World Rowing Championships in Sydney. 20 Women s Eight (W8+): A large field for the women s eight has upped the pressure on perennial winners, Romania. The Romanians, however, will be ready for the challenge which includes last year s silver medallists at the Europeans, Germany. But the biggest challenge may come from Great Britain. The British were fourth at last year s World Rowing Championships and many of these rowers are back in the boat including coxswain Zoe De Toledo with Louisa Reeve moving into stroke seat. Germany and Great Britain face each other for the first time since the British broke the German s winning streak at last year s World Rowing Championships. Germany had been on a roll since 2009, including a gold at the 2012 Olympic Games, but at the 2013 World Champs, not only did Great Britain earn the World Championship title from the Germans, they also earned the first-ever men s eights World Champion title for their country. Both line-ups have been tweaked and both teams will be out to prove their early season boat speed. Other eights up for medal contention will be last year s European Champs silver medallists Poland and also France with a line-up that includes London Olympic silver medallists, Germain Chardin and Dorian Mortelette. 40 Parmigiani Spirit Award University rowers now have their own rowing award. In 2013 British student-rower James Cook became the inaugural winner of the Parmigiani Spirit Award. Sponsored by Swiss watchmaker Parmigiani Fleurier, the award encapsulates rowing s core values - teamwork, fairness, natural and enduring - and recognises the achievements of our next generation of rowers. Open to university students from throughout the world, nominations for last year s award came from 12 countries with Cook, a mechanical engineering student at the University College of London, the winner. Cook has dedicated many hours to coaching young rowers while training at the elite level and studying. Cook has also been part of the Row Zambezi Expedition which raised money for clean water charity, Village Water. Cook received a hand-crafted Parmigiani Fleurier watch as well as a Filippi eight racing shell which was presented to the women s eight crew of his rowing club, the University of London Boat Club. Parmigiani Fleurier joins World Rowing in supporting all young rowing scholars around the world. This award is open to full-time student rowers worldwide who demonstrate the core values of rowing. The nomination procedure for the 2014 Parmigiani Spirit Award is now open. Nominations will close 30 June Submit your nomination here:
