ELE- Online Coursework Submission: A guide for students Overview This guide will take you through the process of submitting, resubmitting and accessing any feedback for an online assignment. Please read the modules assessment information carefully as the submission methods used can vary. You will be required to submit work online for one of two reasons: 1. Your assignment will be marked electronically and feedback will be provided online. 2. Your assignment uses Turnitin to allow students to view a Similarity report prior to a hard copy (printed) submission via BART. If your assignment requires a BART submission then you must submit your printed copy on time as any submissions made to Turnitin will not be counted. Making a submission 1. Log in to ELE, and from the list of My Courses select the module in which the assignment has been set. 2. Locate the assignment link on the module page as highlighted in Figure [1] Submission link Figure [1] Page 1 of 11
3. The assignment link will take you through to the assignment inbox and details of the assignment will be displayed. To submit your assignment you will need to select the Submit Paper icon as highlighted in Figure [2] Figure [2] 4. Enter the assignment title, and click on the Add button to locate your work on your computer as highlighted in Figure [3]. Alternatively you can drag and drop your assignment into the submission box if you are using a compatible browser and device. Add file Add File Page 2 of 11 Figure [3]
File types and maximum size Turnitin currently accepts the following file types for upload into an assignment: Microsoft Word (DOC and DOCX) Corel WordPerfect HTML Adobe PostScript Plain text (TXT) Rich Text Format (RTF) Portable Document Format (PDF) OpenOffice (ODT) The file size may not exceed 40 MB. Files of larger size may be reduced in size by removal of non-text content or the assignment may be set up into multiple part to allow the assignment to be split over multiple parts. Note: Users whose files are saved in a file type that is not accepted by Turnitin will need to use a word processing program to save the file as one of the accepted types. Rich Text Format and Plain Text file types are nearly universally available in word processing software. Neither file type will support images or non-text data within the file. Plain text format does not support any formatting, and rich text format supports only limited formatting options. Tip: When converting a file to a new file format, users should rename their file with a name other than that of the original file. This is suggested to prevent permanent loss of the original formatting or image content of a file due to it being overwritten. Page 3 of 11
5. Follow the on screen instruction to locate and upload you assignment. The File Picker window will allow you to upload your assignment from Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or from your computer. Select Choose File to upload from your computer. 6. Once you are ready to upload you work, select the Add Submission button at the bottom of the page as highlighted in the image below. Figure [4] Add Assignment Title Add Submission Page 4 of 11
Figure [5] For certain assignments you might be required to submit multiple parts, for example a draft version and then a final version. If the assignment has been set up with multiple parts they will be listed along the menu in the assignment inbox as highlighted in Figure [6] The process of submitting your work will be the same for each part of the assignment. Part One Part two Figure [6] Page 5 of 11
Viewing Submission and Originality Report Once a submission has been made to a Turnitin assignment, the submission inbox will contain the submitted paper and a copy of the Digital Receipt. If the assignment has been set up to allowed students to view the Similarity Report for their paper, a percentage icon will appear once the report has been generated as shown in Figure [7]. If the assignment is being marked online or if feedback is being provided online then you will have access to the Grademark system once the PostDate passes, where the feedback and grade will be available. If the assignment requires a hardcopy (paper) submission then marks and feedback will not be provided online. View Digital Receipt View Originality Report Re-Submit Figure [7] Re-submissions If you wish to resubmit an amended piece of work and you have time to do so then you will need to return to your assignment inbox and repeat the submission process as before. If you do not see the Submit Paper link then either the deadline has passed or the assignment has been set up to only allow one submission. Most assignments will be set to allow unlimited re-submissions up until the due date however you must check the details in the assignment instructions or check with your lecturer. Re-submissions will allow you to make improvements on your assignments using any comments provided by your tutor or to improve your referencing using the similarity report. The resubmit link will be listed in your assignment inbox on the right hand side of your original submission as highlighted in Figure [7] Please note: Where resubmissions are permitted then you may re-submit at any time before the due date but only one originality report will be generated in a 24 hour period. You will receive a pending notice until the new report is ready. Page 6 of 11
Viewing Similarity Report If the assignment has been set up to allow student access to the Similarity Reports, they can be viewed via the assignment inbox. Once you have entered the assignment you should see a percentage score which can be selected to open to full report. Please note: The similarity score does not determine whether a paper contains plagiarized material or improperly used material. The Similarity Report provides instructors and students with a tool to more easily locate matching or similar text within the text of a submitted work. The determination and adjudication of proper citation and plagiarism are left solely to the instructor and institution to which the work was submitted. Any questions regarding the definition of plagiarism used at the University of Exeter should be directed to the module convener of the class or a member of the Student and Education Services Team. Page 7 of 11
Figure [7] Each source will be colour coded and highlighted within your submission. You can view the detailed breakdown of larger matched by selecting the source in the Match Overview Match Overview Please refer to the The BSD1000 Study Skills page on ELE to read more about Academic Honesty and Plagiarism and Skills for Referencing. For more information about Originality Reports, please click here to view the Similarity Report chapter of the Turnitin student manual. Page 8 of 11
Viewing Grade-mark comments Any feedback made will be available after the Postdate Select the pencil Icon to view Feedback on Grademark The GradeMark digital mark-up tool allows instructors to mark and grade papers online in a paperless environment. Instructors are able to create custom sets of comments and marks for grading as well as use rubric scorecards that feature quick scoring of student papers against a list of scaled criteria created by the instructor or educational institution. Once the post date of a paper has passed, students are able to access the marked version of the paper and view any grades, comments, marks, or requested changes noted by the instructor. Tip: If the GradeMark icon is not available, the post date of the assignment has not been reached or the instructor has not yet graded or marked the paper. Contact the instructor for further information. Viewing Marked Papers To view a marked paper, the student user will need to click on the blue Pencil Icon next to the assignment. The student GradeMark paper view will open in a separate window in which the student may view or print the grade and comment information. Not all browsers will be able to display the complete features of the GradeMark product. If a browser that is not fully supported is being used, a notification will inform the user. Page 9 of 11
Similarity Report Select comment to expand Any Grades will be displayed here Print your Change page size View Overall Feedback For more information about GradeMark, please click here to view the Grademark Webpage. Page 10 of 11
Further Help If you have a question about the assignment, marking, feedback or similarity report then please contact your lecturer in the first instance. Any other queries can be directed to the Business School Student Services Team located on the ground floor of Building 1. Alternatively you can the Team at Business-school-ses@exeter.ac.uk Please report any technical issues to SID by including as much information as you can. Please include the following information when reporting any issues. Student number Module name and /or code Name of the assignment Please report issues via the SID webpages- Page 11 of 11
