2 Page 1 What is Turnitin? Turnitin is the leading originality checking and plagiarism prevention service used by millions of students and faculty, and thousands of institutions worldwide. Turnitin encourages best practices for using and citing other people s written material. Clarendon College student papers should be submitted through the Turnitin website so that they can be checked by instructors for possible plagiarism violations. In order to register with Turnitin, you must have an Account ID and original Password from Clarendon College. You should have received an from the Dean of Instructions with this information. If you do not have it, contact the Dean.
3 Page 2 Register and create your account Go to Click Create account Click Create a user profile Under Create a New Account, click instructor
4 Page 3 Fill in the following information: Account ID: available from sent from Dean of Instruction Password: available from sent from Dean of Instruction Important! Do not share this with anyone. This is the only time you will need these two pieces of information. Fill in the rest of the page. Note: You will use your address and password you list here each time you log into Turnitin in the future. You can write them on the My Personal Turnitin Information form (page 14 of this manual) to help you remember them: Click the I agree create profile button when finished If this window appears, click Close
5 Page 4 Create your first class A system check automatically runs to make sure your computer is set up to work with Turnitin. Follow the prompts if anything needs to be changed. If you don t want it to perform a system check again on your computer, click the checkbox at the bottom of the screen. Click Continue to Dashboard when finished. Fill in the information for your first class: class type: Leave as standard class. class name: Decide if you want a separate class set up for each class section you teach or whether you want all student papers to go into a single class. Examples of class names: COSC Fall 2010 Denney Pam All Classes Fall 2010 enrollment password: Students will use this to enroll in the class, so choose a simple password. (It is case sensitive so you may want all lower case.) class end date: Set this date as the last date students can enroll in the class or submit papers. Click Submit when finished. You will then see your class listed. You can add another class, edit the information about a class, or delete a class from your list.
6 Page 5 Create a new assignment In order for students to submit papers into Turnitin, you have to create an assignment for each paper. Click on the link to the class for which you want to set up an assignment. Click the New Assignment button to create an assignment. Click Paper Assignment then Next Step New Assignment Settings Required items: Enter an assignment title and choose a start date and due date for the assignment. (The dates control when students can submit papers for the assignment.) Enter a post date which determines when a paper you have marked becomes available for students to see. Other Items: Select a point value if you plan to use the Grademark feature to mark the papers online: Note: more options discussed laterin this manual. Your first assignment is set up. You can set up as many assignments for each class as desired by clicking the New Assignment button.
7 Page 6 Make changes to an existing assignment Signing into Turnitin once your account is created Go to Type the Login address and Password you set up when you registered. Then click the Sign in button Your list of classes you have created will automatically appear.
8 Page 7 Originality Report Checking for Possible Plagiarism Click View for the assignment you want to check. Submissions listed by student names. Depending on what you want to do, click on any of these choices: View paper as submitted by student View Originality Report with matches marked Grademark feature Originality Report Example Grademark window. The best way to learn to use it is by clicking Help and watching the 15 min. video.

13 Page 12 Enrolling students into your class Have students enroll themselves. Step by step instructions and videos are available at CC website under either the Students >> Forms & Resources link or the Faculty & Staff >> Forms & Resources link. You may choose to print the instructions to pass out to your students. Students will need the class ID and your enrollment password to enroll in the class so they can submit papers. Click the statistics button to see them for each of your classes. Do not place the class ID or enrollment password in your syllabus since your syllabus is posted in a publicly accessible website. Recommendation: After all students are enrolled, change your enrollment password so students who forget their passwords do not enroll multiple times and cause confusion. enrollment password class id Information about using Turnitin for your syllabus Add the following information (or something similar) to your syllabus in an appropriate place, such as where you discuss papers students submit or where you discuss academic integrity: Students are responsible for ensuring that their work is consistent with Clarendon College s expectations about academic integrity. In this course you will submit your papers using an online tool, Turnitin.com, to confirm that you have used sources accurately in your papers. In order to submit your papers to Turnitin.com. you will receive a class id and enrollment password at the appropriate time from your instructor. You will also receive step by step instructions about how to use Turnitin.com from your instructor. The instructions and videos are also available at Clarendon College s website at the Students >> Forms & Resources link. 14 Page 13 My personal Turnitin information Website: Login: Password: Students will need the class id and enrollment password when they enroll in your class at Turnitin Class Name Class id Enrollment password My assignment options These choices are made in More options at the bottom of the Assignment Creation page of Turnitin. (More details about each choice are available on pages in User s Guide.) Note: If you make changes to any of the defaults, you will have the option to make your change the default for future assignments you set up. Check the more options you may want to set for assignments: Special Instructions (You have a text box where you can type special instructions to the students.) Would you like to select a QuickMark set? (If you use the Grademark feature, you will want this. The default is no) Generate Originality Reports for submissions? (default is yes) Choose one of these: immediately (first report is final). Students cannot resubmit papers unless instructor deletes previous one immediately (student can overwrite report until due date) Reports require a 24 hr. delay before each subsequent one is processed on due date (originality report not generated until due date of the assignment). Students can resubmit paper as often as desired but won t receive an originality report until due date.
15 Page 14 Exclude bibliographic material from Similarity Index for all papers in this assignment? (default is no) Exclude quoted material from Similarity Index for all papers in this assignment? (default is no) Exclude small matches? (default is no) You can exclude matches by number of words or percentage of paper. This gives instructor more control to focus on larger, more problematic and suspect matches. Allow students to see Originality Reports? (default is no) Allow submissions after the due date? (default is no) Submit papers to standard paper repository (You should leave this at the default and have it check all available repositories. More questions to ask yourself regarding assignments: (1) Multiple Drafts submitted? Do you want students to be able to submit multiple drafts before you grade their paper? If yes... Do you want each new draft submitted to overwrite the old one? (This is the default.) Do you want each new draft submitted without overwriting the old one(s)? If you want this choice, read how to do it on page 21 of the User s Guide regarding Revision Assignments. (2) Peer Reviews? Do you want students to do peer review assignments? (Great 8 ½ min. video about Peermark assignments available at Turnitin s Support link or read Chapter 3 of the User s Guide.) (3) Reflection Assignment? Do you want students to submit a paper about what they have learned during the writing process? (Read information on pages of the User s Guide.) (4) Method for grading student papers? View and grade them in Turnitin? (Use Grademark feature. Great 8 ½ min. video available at Turnitin s Support link or read Chapter 4 in User s guide) Have students submit to Turnitin and also give you a printout (Use Turnitin only to check for plagiarism) Download the papers from Turnitin to your computer? (Step by step instructions begin on pg. 39 of User s Guide)
