Complete systematic observations using a variety of methods of data collection to assess the impact of the environment, interactions, and curriculum on children s development and behavior. 3 Course Description: A course focusing on the appropriate use of a variety of assessment and observation strategies to document child development and behavior. Child observations will be conducted and analyzed. Recommended Preparation: ECE 2 with a grade of C or better, and ENGL 150 Requirements for Success: This course is taught online. To succeed in this course you will need to be familiar with online education. Please go to the CR Distance Education page. Links here will take you to a variety of tutorials about online classes. Time commitment Three-unit courses at College of the Redwoods require 3 hours per week of class time and additional time (6 to 9 hours) to complete course readings and assignments. Welcome to ECE 9 Observation and Assessment in ECE. This course is being taught online. You will be enrolled with students who may be next door or may be hours away but in the electronic world we will build a supportive learning community. I am Sydney Fisher Larson, professor of Early Childhood Education at College of the Redwoods Eureka Campus. I have a Master s Degree in Human Development from Pacific Oaks College. I have been teaching at CR since I also have twenty years of experience administrating child care facilities in California and New Mexico. Course Mechanics: ECE 9 is a sixteen-week course beginning August 25 running through December 12, You will be expected to attend class regularly. Each week you will read a chapter, article or web page and a lecture (available when you click on Modules on the left side of the screen) and you will participate in class discussion each week (These are available when you click on either Modules or Discussions on the left side of the screen). You are required to make at least one posting per week and one response to classmates postings per week (For more details, go to the assignment section of the syllabus.). Your initial posting is due each Thursday night by 11:59 P.M. Responses to peer postings are due by Sunday by 11:59 P.M. each week. All postings should reflect an understanding of the assigned readings and critical thought about the topic. Citations from the reading and discussion that relates the topic to your life/work experience are required for the weekly postings. Completing one posting and one response is a minimum requirement. Students who wish to receive a grade above a C must do more than the basic requirements.

4 You are welcome to express your professional agreement or disagreement with the readings, my lectures, or your classmates postings. Responses to classmates postings should provide information beyond I agree or I disagree. Responses should include why you agree or disagree and should add to the online discussion. (I will remove inappropriate or unprofessional posts from the platform. If that should occur, no points will be issued for the posting.) Homework assignments will be submitted in Canvas as attachments only (not typed into the text box). All assignments are due by Sunday at 11:59 P.M. on the date given. Assignments must be submitted as attachment in one of the following formats: 1. Microsoft Word (DOC and DOCX) 2. Corel WordPerfect 3. HTML 4. Adobe PostScript 5. Plain text (TXT) 6. Rich Text Format (RTF) 7. Portable Document Format (PDF) 8. Hangul (HWP) When you save your document you will select the appropriate file type (see list above) from the save as type box under the file name box at the bottom of the Save As screen. When you save your document please use your last name in the file name. For example as assignment could be saved as Smith, Health Issue Essay. (See illustration below.) 5 There are tutorials built into the Canvas site. When you click on Help in the upper right hand corner of the screen you will be given the options to: send me a message or ask me a question, to search the Canvas Guides for answers to common questions, to report a problem with Canvas, or to suggest a change or new feature to Canvas. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Identify the purpose, value, and use of formal and informal observation and assessment strategies. 2. Describe the major characteristics, strengths, and limitations of selected assessment tools. 3. Complete systematic observations using a variety of methods of data collection to assess the impact of the environment, interactions, and curriculum on children s development and behavior. Assignments: (The syllabus provides a brief summary of the assignments. More details will be provided in the Assignment links in Canvas.) Discussion Forum (Weekly Postings) 45 points (3 points per week for 15 weeks) You will be required to submit one posting and one response to peer postings per week (remember that this is the minimum which will enable you to earn a C ). Weekly postings are a minimum of 250 to 300 words in length and must reflect an understanding of the written (text, lecture, and articles) materials, critical thinking on the topics and citations from the materials you read that support your views (text, articles, lectures). You must cite from the readings (not just the lecture) in your initial weekly post. You will provide page numbers and author s name in your citations.) You must also relate the readings to your personal life and work experiences. Responses are a minimum of 100 words and must thoughtfully discuss the ideas presented in the post to which you are responding. Since there are no tests in this course, these forum posts will be used to determine your mastery of the learning outcomes. Postings are not text messages. You should spell out words and use punctuation and grammar appropriate for college work. Your posting is due by 11:59 p.m. on each Thursday and your response(s) by 11:59 p.m. each Sunday. The forum closes and locks at that time. You will be unable to post after that time. The grading rubric for weekly postings is shown below and is in Canvas with each weekly discussion topic. Weekly Posting Grading Rubric Each week your discussion postings will be graded on a 3 point scale: (If your original posting is late, after Thursday night at 11:59 p.m., the base point score will be two rather than three points.) Original Posting(s) - 2 points Your original posting(s) each week should Cite at least 2 points from the week s readings (.5 point) Relate content to your own personal experiences (.5 point) Critically analyze the content - not just summarize the reading (.5 points) Be grammatically correct and proofread for spelling errors (.2 point) Meet word count requirement ( words) (.3 points) Responses to Other Student Postings - 1 point Your responses to other students and the instructor should... Incorporate quotes from the other postings (.25) Be logically reasoned and supported (.5)

You may retake the quiz as many times as you like. Your highest score will be recorded. Child Observations (SLO #3) 10 points due October 12 Select a single child enrolled in a licensed child care facility who is between 12 months and 5 years of age. You will complete a minimum of 2 running records, 2 anecdotal records and a developmental checklist for this child. The necessary forms are available in the assignment area of Canvas. Further instructions and the grading rubric are also posted in Canvas in the assignment area. DRDP 2010 Summary and Plan (SLO #3) 20 points due November 2 Using the formal and informal assessments from the prior assignment complete the DRDP 2010 for the child you have been observing. You will submit the DRDP 2010 forms attached in the assignment area of Canvas. You will demonstrate how you would use the results of the DRDP to plan curriculum activities to support the child s development. The grading rubric is also posted in the assignment area. Assessment Comparison & Analysis Essay (SLO #1 & #2) 20 points due November 23 You will write a 1500 word essay identifying the purpose, value, and use of formal and informal observation and assessment strategies including running records, anecdotal records, checklists, DRDPs, and standardized tests. You will describe the major characteristics, strengths, and limitations of those assessment tools. You must use a minimum of three sources of which one may be the text. All essays will be submitted through the plagiarism review site, Turnitin.com. Turnitin.com is built into Canvas so there is no additional log in required. Grading Your final grade will be based on the total points you have earned throughout the semester. After each assignment is graded your point value will be posted into the Canvas grade book. You will be able to keep track of your total points throughout the semester at the course Canvas site. In order to understand why you received the score you did on any assignment you must click on Graders Comments in the assignment or in the grade book. Grading rubrics are also available for each weekly forum. (For more refer to the Canvas help menu.) Points can only be earned by completing the above assignments by the deadline. There will be no extra credit available. Please refer you the College of the Redwoods Board Policy on grading - A grade of "C" is considered satisfactory, a "B" is good and an "A" is excellent. My grading criteria is based on the belief that meeting the basic assignment criteria is satisfactory so a "C". To earn a grade higher a student must reach beyond the basics and do more than the basic assignment criteria. An excellent student demonstrates initiative. The difference between doing what is spelled out in the

7 assignment and thinking about how to deepen the assignment is what demonstrates excellence. Assignments are due by 11:59 P.M. on the due date given. Late assignments are accepted for up to two weeks after the due date (except assignments due within two weeks of the end of the semester) but will be graded down a full letter grade for each week or portion of a week. After two weeks assignments will not be accepted. Course Grade* 94 to 100 = A 90 to 93 = A- 86 to 89 = B+ 83 to 85 = B 80 to 82 = B- 76 to 79 = C+ 70 to 75 = C 60 to 69 = D 0 to 59 = F *Please remember that Community Care Licensing and the Commission on Teacher Credentialing only accept grades of C or better. Although a D grade is considered passing, it will not meet the requirements to be a fully qualified Title 22 program director or to earn a child development permit. Students may be dropped from the course at the faculty s discretion if you have failed to log into the course and submit assignments or post into the discussion forums for over two weeks or if the points attained indicate that you are failing the class. Campus E-Resources Through the College of the Redwoods Learning Resource Center you have access to NetLibrary for on-line books and to several databases for journal articles. These will be tremendous resources to you in completing course work. Go to for instructions on how to log in to these sites.
