1 June 2014 Directory of Community-Bsed Orgniztions Serving People with Disbilities The 54 million people with disbilities currently living in the United Sttes experience numerous helth disprities, yet receive fewer preventtive services nd hve poorer helth sttus thn people without disbilities. 1,2 Therefore, locl helth deprtments (LHDs) must include people with disbilities s popultion when considering public helth intervention strtegies. The Ntionl Assocition of County nd City Helth Officils (NACCHO) promotes inclusion nd enggement of people with disbilities in plnning, implementing, nd evluting public helth progrms, products, nd services. With support from the Ntionl Center on Birth Defects nd Developmentl Disbilities t the Centers for Disese Control nd Prevention, NACCHO developed the following directory of communitybsed disbility orgniztions to support nd encourge LHDs to collborte with disbility orgniztions in their respective communities. This directory provides n overview of these orgniztions, the popultions they serve nd support, wys the orgniztions cn complement LHD efforts, nd links to websites tht provide informtion bout locl ffilites/chpters in vrious jurisdictions. NACCHO selected the orgniztions listed within becuse they were ntionlly recognized disbility orgniztions, hd locl chpters ntionwide, nd provided services to persons with vrious types of disbilities. While this directory is not exhustive, it illustrtes how LHDs cn collborte with community-bsed disbility orgniztions. People with disbilities nd community-bsed orgniztions cn support nd offer expertise to LHDs in numerous wys, including the following: Improving ccessibility to buildings nd other spce for people with disbilities; Developing methods to screen for chronic diseses mong people with disbilities; Incresing helth litercy nd ccessibility of helth informtion for people with disbilities; Including people with disbilities in the development of emergency prepredness plns nd exercises; Significnt helth disprities exist for persons with disbilities, including the following: Adults with disbilities re 58 percent more likely to be obese; 3 Children nd dolescents with disbilities re 38 percent more likely to be obese; 4 Cigrette smoking is significntly higher mong dults with disbility (25.4%) compred to dults without disbility (17.3%); 5 Fewer women with disbilities hve mmmogrms s recommended thn women without disbilities; 6 nd People with disbilities re not included in pre-disster emergency plnning. 7 Developing generl nd worksite helth promotion progrms for orgniztions tht support people with disbilities; Conducting environmentl helth scns nd developing strtegies to reduce environmentl toxins; Trining helthcre professionls bout the prticulr needs of people with disbilities; nd Creting progrms for preventing diseses such s brin injuries or birth defects. In ddition to the community-bsed orgniztions listed in the following tble, numerous disbility orgniztions nd service providers exist in locl jurisdictions, including the following: Residentil Hbilittion Homes (e.g., group homes, supported housing); Dy Trining nd Hbilittion Centers (e.g., voctionl trining centers, job coching); Advoccy Groups; Support Groups; nd Activity Clubs.
