GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Participles (5-6 minutes) A Participle is a verbal which is mainly used to modify a noun or a pronoun. Regular verbs form their past participles with the suffix ed and their present participles with the suffix-ing. In contrast, irregular verbs form their past participle by either retaining the base form or changing the spelling. Regular Verb Present Participle Past Participle reserve reserving reserved cancel canceling canceled Irregular Verb Present Participle Past Participle pay paying paid set setting set A participial phrase includes the participle and the complements (noun or pronoun) which serve as a direct object, indirect object or complement. It is also used to modify a noun or a pronoun. Ex: The reserved seats were given to the elderly. participial phrase Reserving the rooms, Mr. Hart paid for them in advance. participial phrase Remember: The participial phrase should always be placed nearest to the noun/pronoun it modifies to avoid confusion. Example: Cancelling the flight, the tickets were thrown away by Ms. Carey. Cancelling the flight, Ms. Carey threw away the tickets. In the example, it was Ms. Carey who cancelled the flight because the tickets cannot cancel flights. 4

5 Examples: The hotel manager, expecting the arrival of guests, ordered the employees to be ready. Expected for early arrival, the tourists were immediately directed to their rooms. Requesting for transfer, Mr. Ray decided to just get a smaller room. The actor filled up the requested information for his hotel reservation.
