2 CIVITAS: Introduction CIVITAS is an EU initiative for supporting and evaluating the implementation of integrated sustainable and energy efficient urban transport strategies in European cities. Objectives Sustainable, clean and (energy) efficient urban transport measures Integrated technology and policy measures Critical mass and markets for innovation 2

3 CIVITAS Plus II ( ) Three projects (2MOVE2, WIKI) will implement around 50 measures and bring together eight demonstration cities. 3

15 What is a SUMP? What is it? A strategic plan that builds on existing planning practices and takes due consideration of integration, participation, and evaluation principles to satisfy the mobility needs of people today and tomorrow for a better quality of life in cities and their surroundings. What is its purpose? A Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan aims to create a sustainable urban transport system by: Ensuring the accessibility of jobs and services to all; Improving safety and security; Reducing pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption; Increasing the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the transportation of persons and goods; Enhancing the attractiveness and quality of the urban environment. The policies and measures defined in a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan should address comprehensively all modes and forms of transport in the entire urban agglomeration, including public and private, passenger and freight, motorised and non-motorised, moving and parking. What does it build on? Municipalities should not consider it as yet another plan on the urban agenda. 21 Málaga Milestones The first SUMP of Málaga was formally adopted by the city council committee in February A new land-use planning was approved by the city council committee in July A new means of transport in Málaga.
