2 DID YOU KNOW THAT The public transport sector is amongst the largest employers at local level, employing 2 MILLION PEOPLE i.e. 20% of the 10 million people employed in the overall transport industry Public transport services contribute between bn per year to the economy i.e % of GDP Road congestion costs the economy 1% of GDP every year Annual investment in public transport accounts for 40bn i.e. 0.5% of cities' GDP The figures cover EU 28 short distance (urban, suburban & regional) public transport services and exclude long distance transport. 3 UITP EUROPE STRONGLY ADVOCATES PUBLIC TRANSPORT In the European Union, UITP brings together more than 400 urban, suburban and regional public transport operators and authorities from all member states and interacts with the European institutions and other organisations. It represents the perspectives of short distance passenger transport services by all modes: bus, regional and suburban rail, metro, light rail and tram and waterborne. These services are often organised in integrated public transport networks covering metropolitan areas and other specific territories. OUR OBJECTIVES Create the framework for attractive and efficient public transport. Achieve coherent public transport-friendly legislation, which is sustainable, affordable and practical in all aspects. Improve voluntary technical harmonisation through European research, innovation and standardisation. Double the public transport market share. Create a level playing field with individual motorised transport modes.

4 PUBLIC TRANSPORT REPRESENTS A LEVER FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND WEALTH CREATION. IT THEREFORE CONTRIBUTES TO THE EUROPE 2020 STRATEGY.

5 MAKING CITIES MORE ATTRACTIVE AND MORE COMPETITIVE Well-organised mobility in cities facilitates access to markets and services and creates economic opportunities. It encourages social integration, makes an efficient use of resources and limits air pollution and GHG emissions. All of this is key to achieving the Europe 2020 targets. The quality of public transport networks is often part of the criteria for top placement in international city rankings based on quality of life, attractiveness to business, etc. DIRECTLY CREATING STABLE AND GREEN JOBS IN CITIES Public transport operators and authorities are important employment providers for the local economy as they offer green jobs that cannot be delocalised and are less affected by economic downturns. Public transport operators are amongst the largest employers in many European cities. SUPPORTING INDUSTRY AND DRIVING INNOVATION Urban, suburban and regional public transport (through infrastructure, rolling stock, engineering, networks operation and maintenance ) is a key element for an industrial policy focused on European excellence and global competitiveness. The supply of goods and services for public transport represents a dynamic market with players in many European countries and regions. Investing in public transport creates up to two times more jobs per euro spent than investing in other areas, such as roads. This is due to higher space efficiency (thus fewer resources required for land acquisition), complexity of projects (thus variety of skills required) and job creation in the supply chain (vehicles, etc.).
