2 Welcome to the School of Science The School of Science is a place of inspiration to both staff and students alike. It is a multidisciplinary school that is enriched with a range of excellent state-of-the-art facilities, staff who are committed to research and teaching, and strong links to industry, professional bodies, research councils and European funding. The School comprises two departments: Department of Life & Sports Sciences Department of Pharmaceutical, Chemical & Environmental Sciences. The School s programmes cover subjects ranging from sports science to chemistry and from biotechnology to environmental science. We also provide an online Master s degree in biomedical science aimed at those in the profession. We offer undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes and typically have over 60 PhD students at any one time. The ambition of the School is to be a place of inspiration and enquiry, developing competent and employable graduates. 3 School overview Teaching The School of Science has a strong commitment to learning by doing, i.e. we want our students to be inspired by learning as much about science as possible through the laboratory and hands-on experience. We employ the very latest learning and assessment techniques, provide pastoral care to ensure students achieve their goals and deliver academic and professional programmes supported by research and scholarship. Most of our programmes are accredited or recognised by relevant professional bodies, giving students confidence in the quality of our teaching programmes. All staff in the School have extensive expertise in their field and are keen to inform their teaching through their research. The teaching ethos of the School is to produce professional graduates who can meet the demands of the rapidly changing scientific environment. Research The School hosts six research clusters: Drug Discovery & Biotechnology Environment & Sustainability Materials Chemistry Pharmaceutical Sciences Sports Science Science Education. The School is now producing internationally top-rated research in several fields, including pharmaceutical science and drug delivery, drug discovery, NMR techniques, environmental science and sustainability. It also has a rapidly growing portfolio of enterprise work, providing high-quality testing and analysis services to clients in industries from sporting equipment and fitness to oil discovery. The most recent research highlights include a 4.6 million project led by researchers Dr Tim Acott and Dr Julie Urquhart which is helping to regenerate coastal fishing communities on both sides of the English Channel and the southern North Sea. Professor Pat Harvey has been successful with an INTERREG bid worth million to the university. The School s recent achievements The School of Science has been the recipient of a number of awards and accolades in recent times. For instance, a new book written by Dr Lauren Pecorino looking at the extraordinary progress being made to fight cancer, Why Millions Survive Cancer, has been highly acclaimed. The process, called accelerated carbonated technology, converts contaminated land and industrial waste into harmless pebbles. Professor John Nicholson s new book, The Chemistry of Polymers, is also attracting considerable attention and very positive reviews. A number of our staff sit on national and international committees, including the Dean, Professor Martin Snowden, who is the Chair of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Professor Steve Wicks, who is a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Science Assembly. 3

4 The positions Professor of Chemistry The appointee to this post would provide greater strength and depth to our research, enterprise and teaching in organic synthetic chemistry or medicinal chemistry. The appointed candidate would be expected to interact on research projects with a wide range of staff in the School, as well as externally, and also act as a mentor to early career academics. An appointment will only be made where the candidate can demonstrate consistent evidence of external grant winning and a high-grade publication record. The Department of Pharmaceutical, Chemical & Environmental Sciences has strength and depth in analytical chemistry, material science, formulation science and environmental science, with a number of academics active in research and enterprise in each area. The appointee would also be able to contribute to teaching on our internationally recognised MSc and undergraduate programmes and would be able to interface with this already well-established activity in the School. This would support the School in establishing itself as a major internationally leading centre with growing undergraduate applications, buoyant postgraduate numbers and a rapidly increasing research reputation. In addition, the academic appointed to the post would foster strong research links with other researchers within the School as well as nationally and internationally. The appointee would be expected to have an internationally recognised track record of pioneering/cutting-edge research (as evidenced by a high h-index and publications in highimpact journals) and income generation. It is also expected that the successful applicant would be recognised as a leading light in his or her field. The appointee should already lead a thriving research group and contribute to/lead the introduction of innovative teaching areas within the School s academic portfolio. 4

5 Professor of Synthetic Biology The appointee to this post would bring an interdisciplinary/ integrative approach to studies within the areas of molecular biology, molecular immunology, molecular pharmacology, molecular biochemistry and pharmaceutical science. These areas of research have been boosted in recent times by the appointment of Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in the School. There is considerable current industrial interest in synthetic biology, and it is expected that the successful applicant would be able to derive significant funding from the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, who are major contributors to the UK economy. This individual could also mentor ECRs in the subject area to develop a large, coherent team. The appointee would also be able to contribute to teaching on our internationally recognised MSc programmes in biotechnology, pharmaceutical science, pharmaceutical analysis and formulation science and would readily be able to interface with this already well-established activity in the School. This would help cement pharmaceutical science at Greenwich and help support the School as a major internationally leading centre with growing undergraduate applications, buoyant postgraduate numbers and a rapidly increasing research reputation. In addition, the academic appointed to the post would foster strong research links with other researchers within the School as well as nationally and internationally.
