1 Graduate Education Courses of Study in the College of Health Sciences The College of Health Sciences currently offers 4 Graduate courses of study namely: Post Baccalaureate Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D), Master of Philosophy/ Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutics (MPhil/PhD), Master of Science in Public Health (MPH), Master of Science in Health Administration (MHA). The College will also offer four new graduate courses of study commencing September These include: Master of Philosophy/Doctor of Philosophy in Nutrition and Food Science, Master of Science (Residency) in Implant Dentistry, Master of Science (Residency) Peadiatric Dentistry Master of Science in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (MSc. CAM) Programme Name: Post-Baccalaureate Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D) Programme Code: PPHPHARPT COURSE OF STUDY SUMMARY The Post-Baccalaureate Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D) is taught post-graduate degree designed for highly motivated pharmacists who hold an accredited bachelor s degree in pharmacy and desire to advance their educational and professional career. The course of study will focus primarily on the therapeutic management of conditions associated with the human biological systems along with elective modules that are unique to the Caribbean region. As a post-baccalaureate degree, the advanced content of the UTech Pharm.D. course of study complements practice experience and fosters a higher level of competence and autonomy. The programme will include extensive clinical training that will enable graduates to develop advanced analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to translate theoretical knowledge into clinical applications.
2 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS (a) (b) (c) Applicants should be registered practicing pharmacists with a Bachelor in Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) or equivalent from an accredited institution. Applicants should have a minimum of a Second Class Honours degree. Applicants with a Pass degree would be required to complete qualifying modules (as determined by the University). Applicants should have at least one year experience as a practicing pharmacist. COURSE OF STUDY DESIGN The Pharm. D course of study is organized according to the human body systems and requires candidates to earn 78 modular credits on a part-time basis over a period of three calendar years. The course of study is designed to incorporate taught modules, practical modules, clinical clerkship and a research project. The course of study will place heavy emphasis on the therapeutic management of conditions associated with the following systems; o Digestive system o Neurological-Psychiatric Systems o Structural / Protective Systems o Circulatory System o Cardiac System o Respiratory System o Renal System o Endocrine System CURRICULUM STRUCTURE Core Modules Elective 54 credits (Ethno-Pharmacy, Radio-pharmacy, Oncology, Infectious Disease, Nutrition, Sports Medicine, Forensic Pharmacy, Advanced Toxicology, Poison Information, Regulatory Affairs, Patient Safety
3 Clinical Clerkship 15 credits Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Cardiology, Psychiatry, Infectious Diseases and Trauma Care Research (Longitudinal) 6 credits Programme Name: Master/Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology Programme Code: PMPPHAMPTU1 COURSE PHILOSOPHY Pharmaceutics The science of dosage forms design - holds a central place in pharmacy education, forming a link between the industrial product development and manufacturing, and clinical aspects of therapeutic application. The graduate course in pharmaceutics is designed to develop independent, creative scientists and professionals with adequate knowledge and skill base to function in academic and industrial research and development. The course is packaged to develop suitably qualified candidates in advanced theory and practice of dosage form design, formulation and evaluation. The process development and validation component is expected to expose participants to the latest developments in this rapidly expanding field. In addition, the biological component of the programme will provide a solid foundation for candidates understanding of the effects of micro-organisms on product stability and the mechanisms by which drugs act on micro-organisms in drug products and in biologic systems such as man. The product of the program is confidently expected to be very versatile in the subject of drug development from chemical and biological substances into dosage forms of optimal quality. COURSE RATIONALE The Master/Doctor of Philosophy degree in Pharmaceutics is the first of its kind in the Caribbean and a need gap exists that justifies this initiative. The training of graduates in pharmaceutical products and process research and development, manufacturing and control would contribute significantly to the expansion of pharmaceutical research and development in Jamaica and the Caribbean. It will also produce potential tutors for the pharmaceutics departments of the Schools of Pharmacy across the region.
4 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS M.Phil. Course in Pharmaceutics (Pharmaceutical Technology Option) Bachelor s degree in Pharmacy of the University of Technology, Jamaica or any other approved institution recognized by the Academic Board. Pharmaceutical Analysis Option B. Pharm.; B.Sc. in Applied Chemistry, Industrial or Analytical Chemistry or Biochemistry of UTech or any other approved institution recognized by the Academic Board. At least a Second Class Upper division or with a GPA of 3.0 or its equivalent. Ph. D. Course Taught or Research master degree in Pharmacy or as specified (including a research component) Programme Structure M. Phil. 5 Master of Science in Public Health (MPH) Programme Code: PMRPUHEFT COURSE OF STUDY SUMMARY The Master of Public Health Course of study is a18 calendar month (5 semesters) part-time course designed to achieve the primary objectives of Health Sectors worldwide by producing Public Health Professionals with primary focus on monitoring and achieving good health and quality of life through community action. It targets health professionals who hold accredited bachelor s degree in a health related field from a recognised institution and wish to advance and diversify their educational and professional career. Each candidate is required to earn 43 modular credits within the specific time period. The course of incorporates taught modules, practical modules, clinical clerkship and a research project. Graduates should be competent and able to; evaluate workplace and school safety, plan for and initiate community participation and action, evaluate heath care access efficiency and effectiveness and, design and maintain policies and services to meet community and individual needs for physical and mental health. COURSE OF STUDY DESIGN: The Master of Public Health Degree requires candidates to earn 43-modular credits over an eighteen month period (5 semesters). All candidates must offer to undertake the following: 1) All 5 core modules 2) 4 cross-cutting/interdisciplinary module 3) A discipline-specific/specialization module to be determined by the respective specialization areas (one module) 4) 1 Elective module 5) Clinical clerkship (1 semester) 6) A Public Health discipline-specific research project (done over 3 semesters). ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: (a) Admission will be open to all UTech graduates in the Nursing, Pharmacy, D/N, EH, CCD, MT, and other Health Sciences, and Allied Health programmes.
6 (b) Graduates of accredited degree programmes in medicines, nursing, dental, environmental/occupational health, Pharmacy and other allied health professions from other recognized tertiary institutions. (c) Admissions may be considered for all other degree level certifications from recognized institutions in other fields. Candidates admitted among this group may be required to offer some identified additional modules to augment their Health Sciences background. (d) Applicants should have a minimum of a Second Class Honors degree or equivalent. Applicants with a Pass degree would be required to complete qualifying modules (as determined by the University). (e) Prior Learning Assessment route of entry- applicants who have pertinent experience and present such portfolios would be eligible for entry upon review on a case by case basis. 7 Master of Science in Health Administration (MHA) Programme Code: PMSHEADFT COURSE SUMMARY Health Care Service in Jamaica and the Caribbean has undergone significant changes over the past decade. Health care systems have evolved from plantation and army barracks to well structured systems designed to deliver health care to a changing population. Jamaica and other countries in the Caribbean have institutionalized education programmes geared towards the development of specialized care, and have been training health care professionals, and equipping them with a diversity of clinical and technical skills to deliver care. There is however a general weakness in the leadership and management of the health care organization in the region. With this in mind the College has developed the MHA Course of Study designed to explore the organization, financing and delivery of health care services and discuss the elements of efficient and effective management of health systems to ensure quality health among the population. The MHA Course of study is delivered over eighteen (18) calendar months and requires candidates to earn 42 modular credits. The course incorporates taught modules, practical modules, clinical clerkship and a research project. COURSE OF STUDY DESIGN The course of study is delivered in a modular format, which allows professionals flexibility to study and share in a vibrant learning environment. The course of study comprises of 12 calendar months of didactic lectures and 6 months clinical clerkship. Candidates are required to earn 43 modular credits over one and a half calendar years. All students must offer to undertake the following: 1. All core modules comprising 2. One discipline-specific module 3. One elective module 4. Clinical Clerkship 5. Research project
